‘Core i9’ Stories

Details of Intel’s upcoming 6-core/12-thread Xeon (Gulftown) processor – and the CPU tipped to appear in the upcoming Apple Mac Pro refresh – have leaked, and while original predictions were that the hexacore chip would be branded the Core i9, it now seems that it will slot into the Core i7 Extreme range with an “X” suffix.  First to the base will be the Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, running at 3.33GHz.

Charts purporting to illustrate Intel's plans for its desktop processor range through 2010 have emerged, bringing with them talk of a frugal version of the Core i5 together with budget Core i3 CPUs.  The chart also discuss the previously-leaked Core i9 processor, though that's not expected to arrive until the second quarter of 2010 despite having already been caught in the wild.

In-the-wild details of Intel’s upcoming 32nm Gulftown processor have leaked, courtesy of XtremeSystems forum member JCornell.  The engineering sample is believed to be running at 2.4GHz, with CPU-Z registering six cores, 12 threads and 1.5MB of total L2 cache split into six 256KB portions.

Intel logo2After word slipped out from Taiwan earlier this week that Intel were considering pushing back the release of the Pine Trail Atom N450 processor until the first half of 2010, now comes more specific news from PC manufacturers that both the netbook platform, Pine Trail-M, and its Pine Trail-D nettop sibling will both now arrive in the first quarter of next year.  That, say the unnamed sources, will coincide with the release of Intel’s 32nm Core i9 processors, codenamed Gulftown, and offering six cores.
