Intel has released its latest high-end processor, the Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, packing six 3.46GHz cores and 12 processing threads. Capable of being overclocked to 3.73GHz using Intel's Turbo Boost technology (and likely higher again, when the aftermarket modders get their hands on the chip), the Core i7-990X Extreme Edition comes with unlocked multipliers so that tweaking the speed is more straightforward.

MacBook Pro stock shortage could point to imminent Sandy Bridge refresh

Apple's MacBook Pro range could be due for an imminent refresh, if reports of dwindling stocks of existing 15- and 17-inch models pan out. According to multiple MacRumors sources both Apple Stores and third-party retailers are running low on supplies of the notebooks, with Amazon listing 1-2 month delays on shipping the 17-inch MBP. The shortage could herald a refresh of the MacBook Pro line, introducing Intel's new Sandy Bridge 2011 Core processors.

Intel push Core 2011 chips for entertainment; Intel Insider 1080p HD movie store

Intel made its Sandy Bridge based 2011 Core i3, i5 and i7 processors official earlier this week, but it's still making a song & dance about them at CES 2011 today. More than 500 desktop and laptop PCs using the chips are expected to debut in 2011, with features like Intel Quick Sync Video - for speedy transcoding - and WiDi 2.0. Meanwhile there's also Intel Insider, a hardware feature of the chips for purchasing and renting 1080p HD movies on their PC.

HP Pavilion PCs get Intel/AMD refresh plus Radeon graphics

HP hasn't just been reworking its notebooks with new Intel and AMD CPUs and GPUs; the company's Pavilion desktops have also seen a refresh. The new Pavilion, Slimline and Elite models kick off from $300, $330 and $600 respectively when they arrive on January 9 2011, with the HP Pavilion p6700 starting things off with a Pentium E5700 processor while the HP Elite HPE-500 kicks off with an AMD Phenom II 1045T hexacore.
