Press Release:

Acer Debuts TravelMate Timeline Series of Notebook PCs for Business Customers

Excellent performance combined with up to eight hours of battery life deliver ultimate mobility and convenience

SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Acer America, part of the world’s second largest PC vendor (1), today introduced its new TravelMate Timeline series of notebook PCs for business customers. The new TravelMate Timeline 8571, 8471 and 8371 are ultra-thin mobile workhorse notebooks designed for on-the-go professionals who need prolonged productivity. A long lasting six-cell battery provides up to eight hours of power(2) when Acer PowerSmart Manager is enabled.

With prices ranging from $899 to $999, the TravelMate Timeline series delivers excellent performance and the capabilities most important to travelling professionals.

Offering a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo Processors supporting Intel 64 architecture and equipped with the Intel GS45 Express chipset, and either 3GB or 4GB of fast SDRAM, the TravelMate Timeline notebooks provide the horsepower business professionals need for multi-tasking, e-mail, Internet browsing or powering through advanced applications.

Keeping sensitive work information safe and secure, each TravelMate Timeline series notebook features the Acer Bio-Protection fingerprint solution, providing the peace of mind and security that business travelers, in particular, will appreciate.

For traveling professionals and off-site workers who need to stay in touch with the home office and clients, the TravelMate Timeline notebooks makes it easy to browse websites, check email or make VOIP calls through a range of communications capabilities, including 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N WLAN, Bluetooth and gigabit LAN. In addition, an integrated webcam is included for face-to- face interactions and videoconferencing sessions.

The TravelMate Timeline notebooks offers displays ranging from 13.3, 14.1 to 15.6 inches, keeping the notebooks thin and light, providing an ideal size and weight for most traveling professionals. Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD with full support for Microsoft DirectX10 delivers bright, crisp graphics and video.

In addition, the wide keys of the Acer FineTouch keyboard allow for comfortable typing while on the road, and the multi-gesture touchpad lets users navigate, zoom and scroll with remarkable ease. A touchpad lock prevents accidental cursor movement.

Back in the office, an optional Acer EasyPort IV port replicator provides quick connection to desktop peripherals, such as a keyboard, monitor and printer. A 5-in-1 card reader makes it easy to transfer photos from a camera or camcorder.

Giving businesses flexibility and convenience when it comes to their operating systems, the TravelMate Timeline series comes with Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) pre-installed, and can be easily overwritten with Windows XP Professional, which Acer provides on a CD.

AOpen have outed their latest nettop, but whereas we’re used to apologetic Atom processors holding us back, the AOpen XC Mini GP7A-HD takes regular Core 2 Duo CPUs instead. The barebones kit also packs NVIDIA’s Ion graphics chipset, which adds up to Full HD performance and a machine that could actually do a little gaming on your big-screen TV.

Otherwise there’s a DVD burner, two DDR3 memory slots (4GB max, though it’s unclear if that’s per-slot or overall) and a 2.5-inch HDD bay. Connectivity includes HDMI and VGA outputs (which will work simultaneously), together with gigabit ethernet, six USB 2.0 ports, eSATA, audio in/out and a 6-in-1 memory card reader. There’s no standard wireless connection, but two empty PCI Express Mini Card slots inside are enough for both a WiFi b/g/n card and a TV tuner if you should so wish.

Since a regular CPU and NVIDIA Ion could lead to things getting pretty toasty inside, AOpen have produced a custom cooling system with a copper processor heat-sink and integrated fan. That’s enough, they say, for just 26dB of noise from the nettop; plus there are silent and HD playback modes which can throttle things back so that fan noise isn’t an interruption during basic video playback.

What we don’t yet know is pricing, which should be announced closer to the system’s release in mid-December. We’re hoping for a reasonably affordable setup, since this is actually one of the more appealing desktops (and potential HTPCs) that we’ve seen in recent months.

Each has WiFi b/g/n and gigabit ethernet, a webcam, and the larger has ASUS’ Total Media Center app too. Both models will drop on October 22nd, along with Windows 7, with the Eee Top ET2002T priced from £559 ($891) and the Eee Top ET2203T from £819 ($1,305).

More Intel chip news after the cut

Before that, mid-range systems will have the option of new Core 2 Quad processors. Intel is expected to launch the Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66GHz and its low-power Q8400S 2.66GHz equivalent on April 19th, priced at $183 and $245 respectively. Meanwhile the existing Core 2 Quad Q9300 will see an almost 20-percent price cut, with roughly 13-percent cuts on the Core 2 Quad S range.

Intel also have price cuts planned for July 19th, with the Core 2 Quad Q8300 dropping almost 11-percent, the Core 2 Duo E7500 falling by 15-percent, and the Pentium dual-core E5400, E5300 and E1500 seeing 12, 13.5 and 19-percent reductions respectively. Intel also have two new Pentium dual-core chips and a new Core 2 Duo E7600 arriving in May, clock-speeds unknown.

CoolIT is launching the MTEC Docking Station for Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile processor-based laptops today at IDF. This docking station is more than average, giving a 40 watt cooling boost to your laptop, resulting in a decrease in temperature by 10 degrees.

This MTEC docking station can allow you to overclock while keeping your laptop nice and cool. According to its press release, this latest CoolIT offering has the following features:

• CoolIT’s MTEC Technology – An efficient, Thermoelectric design manages airflow by
pumping chilled air directly into the laptop’s existing CPU and GPU intakes while guiding all
heat exhaust through the rear of the dock.
• Full Software Control –CoolIT’s MTEC Control Center software allows users to customize
performance based on cooling power vs. desired acoustic levels. Control GPU cooling
independent from CPU cooling. The software also provides detailed, real-time readouts for
chilled air supplies.
• Noise Reduction – Low noise airflow design to accelerate heat dissipation without the
acoustic penalty.

This is good news for gamers that want that extra push in performance.

Other than the fairly amazing graphics technology that is packed inside of this notebook, courtesy of NVIDIA, it also has a Core 2 Duo Processor. Add to that the 4GB of RAM and the SATA hard drive running with a 15.4” screen and you’ve got a pretty amazing machine.

You get your choice of processor speeds ranging from 2.26GHz, 2.4GHz, 2.53GHz and that’s it. On the Hard drive side you get your choice between a 32 and 64GB SSD drive.

Also, that 15.4” display isn’t your standard 15” display; it is FullHD with a 1920×1200 resolution. You also get WiFi in the form of 802.11n, sadly there are no pricing or availability details on this notebook, but I can tell you that this news comes from an Italian notebook website, so I wouldn’t really expect to see this outside of that region.

A simple name change has Psystar back on their feet selling their cheap desktop computers that are configurable with OS X on them. They’ve also added a new computer to their lineup, the OpenPRO which is available with a lot better case, comes standard with an 8000 series GeForce card and a 10k RPM HDD as well as a couple gigs of RAM.

Psystar is no longer just targeting Apple’s Mac Mini and iMac lineups, with the new OpenPRO they are even going after the Mac Pro, a computer which, from Apple, has a base price of a fair amount over $2000. The OpenPRO can be had, maxed out with a 1TB HDD, an 8800GT with 512MB VRAM, 8GB of RAM, and a nice case with 3 120mm fans inside and OS X installed for you for $1929.99.

Then there is the Open Computer, or OpenMac as it was formerly known, that is selling for $399 with a plain white case, a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 processor, 2GB of RAM, integrated Intel Graphics, a 20x DVD burner, 4 USB ports and a 250GB HDD, that’s $200 less than the cheapest Mac and running hardware more comparable to higher end Macs. OS X installation is $155 extra on each machine and includes a copy of the OS as well as the installation being performed for you, you can also get the OpenPRO configured with a number of OS’s including Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition, OS X, and even Ubuntu. I must say I’m impressed, and the company is even rumored to be willing to fight Apple’s EULA terms in order to get the OS installed on their hardware.

First they thinned up all of the models, it was at the cost of a bit of ruggedness, but now the notebooks are a lot thinner.

Then they added some little features that make a big difference including adopting the touch sensitive LED backlit keys of some of the XPS systems. The notebooks are now noticeable thinner and lighter and have some other features that road warriors are likely to appreciate, but they still maintain the same low price and they come crap-ware free.

The 1310 is a 13.3” notebook that you can get with up to a Core 2 Duo chip or as low as a Celeron processor, base price is $749. The 1510 and 1710 are 15.4 and 17 inch notebooks respectively and cover the same choices in processor as the 1310, the differences being that they are larger laptops with the 17-inch model aimed at users seeking a desktop replacement solution, the 1510 has a base price of $599 with no base price for the 17-inch model given. The 1310 and 1510 are available today throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; North American and South American markets will get these two notebooks come May 1st with Asia getting them on May 5th, later in May the 1710 will launch globally.

This may already be a non-issue as their site is already down, however the company was apparently cranking out computers with 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 250GB HDDs, 2GB of RAM, a DVD burner, and Mac OS X Leopard. For some extra money you could have reportedly gotten FireWire and an NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT added to that list.

The basic computer was reportedly selling for $399, a far shot from the cost of even the most basic Mac which I’m pretty sure is still the Mac Mini ringing in at $499 at its cheapest. Not only are such practices as these generally frowned upon by Apple, but it’s also against the End User License Agreement of Mac OS X to install the OS on any non-Apple hardware.

The basic idea behind the system was using an EFI emulator to run the OS as is. The downside was that even the company admitted that future updates from Apple had the possibility of crashing the system. However they were kind enough to provide a site that you could have used to check whether a particular update would crash your system or not, but, chances are the company is either already out of business or on its way there considering their site went down somewhere around the time Apple’s legal team was likely to be reporting for duty.

This notebook has a 12.1-inch screen that is LED backlit, a Core 2 Duo ULV U7700 processor, a couple gigs of RAM, a DL-DVD-RW drive, and then the 128GB SSD drive. This might actually be one of the most energy efficient notebooks there is that still maintains a respectable about of storage space.

I mean, sure the ULV processor, LED backlit display, and SSD drive will help keep the battery life up, but they also combine to help keep the price up. There wasn’t one listed on any of the sites, and apparently this particular model can only be found on a few of Toshiba’s international sites right now, but I can guarantee it’s going to cost you a pretty penny.

Lets just say that a 128GB SSD in a 2.5-inch form factor is going for at the minimum, $3000 on Google Products right now, and they are going as high as just over $4000. So, you can bet you’ll be paying at least that much for it, and then probably tack on another grand or so for the rest of the notebook that’s attached to it.

They added a 128GB SSD and CDMA to this notebook. You won’t be able to get both CDMA and SSD on this machine – The CDMA equipped unit comes with an 80GB HDD, not the 128GB SSD.

You can also get up to a U7600 Core 2 Duo processor in it and that combined with the 128GB SSD max out the price at about €3846 or roughly one and a half times that in USD. So basically, you’d better really want this notebook if you’re going to throw out nearly six grand to get one.

The low end is €2470 for the notebook, so it doesn’t exactly get cheap regardless of which model you buy. Personally, if I were going to put that kind of money out for and SSD drive, I’d put it in a VooDoo notebook or something like that.

Apparently this notebook is part of some sort of new green initiative over at Asus and is made from bamboo. I must say myself, it looks simply amazing.

It appears to have a 15.4” screen, and look like a standard laptop, just with extra coatings of bamboo. No word on details of the specs, anywhere, but I have seen guess of a ULV processor, and others say it uses Core 2 Duo, the latter seems more likely.

So, like I said, I can’t find any more details on this notebook anywhere, but, as soon as I get them, I’ll let you know. For now, just gawk at the amazing beauty.

Its big, its black, and it lights up red and its made by ASUS. ASUS is a company known for making some of the best and most dependable components and with their reach covering motherboards, soundcards, cases, power supplies, and video cards, its no surprise they took the next logical steps and made their own desktop.

It has a Core 2 Extreme processor, up to 8GB of DDR3, NVIDIA 3-way SLI and 4 terabytes of HDD storage space. This is stacking up to be less of a gaming computer and more of a supercomputer within a gaming case, that’s amazing.

There are also Dual Power power modules, and liquid cooling build in. Best of all, its covered in Armor and menacing red lights.

Each of those numbers correspond mainly to the available screen sizes with the 1420 having a 14.1-inch screen, the 1520 having a 15.4” screen, and the 1720 having a 17-inch screen. The 1420 and 1520 will now have the T8300 Penryn chip running at 2.4GHz as an option.

The 1720 will have the T8300 as well as the T9300 running at 2.5GHz both as options. The benefits of these processors, other than better performance, are that they have lower power consumption and lower heat output resulting in a longer battery life compared to their 65nm Core 2 Duo counterparts.

The older chips had the codename of Merom applied to them and used the larger 65nm process instead of the new 45nm process the Penryn chips apply. No word on what the premium is for a Penryn chip, but I assume that for the performance bump that goes with it, it isn’t much.

But in Australia they actually have the new Dell notebook up for pre-order, what gives?

Anyways, we at least know the specs of the darned thing now, it seems to have a 15.4-inch screen, 160GB HDD, and Intel graphics by way of the GMA X3100 chipset. There is also a nifty processor upgrade to the Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 operating at 2GHz with an 800MHz FSB.

At current conversion rates the previously described notebook will retail for about $1224 USD. They are slated for shipping on January 9th, so maybe we’ll get a release or at least an announcement by then.

Almost a month to the day from now, Intel will be unleashing their first mobile processors based on the 45nm process. The models will include the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500, and the Core 2 Extreme X9000 chips.

The slowest, the T8100, will run at 2.1GHz and the T8300 will run at 2.4GHz, both will have 3MB of L2 cache and will cost $209 and $241. The T9300 will run at 2.5GHz and the T9500 will run at 2.6GHz, the T9300 and T9500 will both be sporting 6MB of L2 cache.

The T9300 and T9500 will cost you $316 and $530 each respectively. Last on the list is the X9000 Extreme Edition processor that will be running at 2.8GHz with the same 6MB of L2 cache as its 9000 series siblings. It will also likely be overclockable, and will cost you $851 (ouch!). The non-extreme models will use 35 watts of power while the Extreme one will use a hungry 44 watts.

It offers up dual core processors from Intel, a card reader, a slim remote that stows away in the ExpressCard slot, HD display choices to get the most out of your media, a 2MP web cam, a fingerprint scanner, and low-pro optical drives featuring either Blu-Ray or a DVD-burner. You get your choice of 3 colors, Crimson Red, Tuxedo Black, or Alpine White too.

Specs wise your processor choices range from a Core 2 Duo T5250 processor at 1.5GHz all the way up to a Core 2 Duo T7800 at 2.6GHz, up to 4 gig of DDR2, your choice of a 5400 RPM 250GB HDD or a speedy 7200RPM 200GB HDD. You can even get WWAN connections from your choice of Sprint or Verizon, and that’s pretty much the bulk of what this notebook has to offer.

So not to long ago we learned of ATI’s new 3800 series graphics cards, and already Toshiba is dropping a notebook with the mobile versions of those chips in it. Its Japan only, but still, that’s a pretty quick turn around time.

It’s a 15.4” Dynabook with the HD 3800 chip in it, the Intel PM 965 Express chipset, and a Core 2 Duo T7500 processor. Not a bad show for what I believe is the first notebook to feature the ATI Radeon HD 3800 chipset, I wonder how much video RAM it comes with and whether its GDDR3 or GDDR4.

Really it’s a pretty attractive notebook if I do say so myself. I am sure that we can expect to start seeing the budget DX10 compatible graphics chips hitting US-bound notebooks soon.

So, Black Friday (this Friday for those not in the know) is fast approaching and that means that millions of people in the retail industry will seriously consider suicide as a possible alternative to finishing their shift. It also means that there will be tons of stuff on sale for dirt cheap.

A large portion of that stuff will be electronics, computers, home theater equipment, you name it, the US is probably one of, if not the largest markets for consumer electronics and Black Friday is a great excuse to move a few units out the door. One such product that many cost savvy consumers will be looking for is the coveted uber cheap notebook.

Our friends over at Notebooks.Com have compiled a full list of all the Black Friday laptop sales, and there are some good deals too. If you want to see the full list, check out the via link, but here are a few notable examples:

The coveted $300 or less laptop comes from Circuit City this year, several stores have a sub $400 laptop, but Circuit City has the cheapest one at $299 after a $350 discount. It’s the Compaq Presario C717nr which has a Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) T2310, a 15.4” LCD, an 80GB HDD, a gig of RAM, and a DVD burner and comes pre-loaded with Vista.

CompUSA has some sales on Apple notebooks including a MacBook with a 5% discount and a MacBook Pro for $100 off. The MacBook is the 2.16GHz version and the MBP is the 2.2GHz 15.4” one.

The last one I am going to list is the HP Dragon from CompUSA, it’s the HDX9010NR and its $2599 after a $400 discount. If you don’t know, this is HP’s 20.1” laptop, this particular model has a C2D T 7500, a 240GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, an HD-DVD ROM drive, Vista Ultimate, integrated webcam, and a TV Tuner. This laptop is amazing specs wise but is only portable in the same way a pocket bike fits in your pocket, as in, its not.

Well, like I said, click on through to see the whole list, its kind of lengthy, and who knows, they could have what you have been looking for, in which case I’d feel obligated to cross everyone else off my Christmas list and think about myself only. But that’s just me, Happy Holidays.

Can you imagine a smaller, faster, more energy efficient processor than what is in our computers today? Well, Intel can, and they did. Today Intel unveiled its new Penryn lineup of super small, super fast chips.

We can speculate that these new chips will be sold under the Core 2 and Xeon brand name. But expect them to be one-third smaller, and 15% faster, and expect to pay a little bit more for these chips.

The Penryn based processors will start appearing initially in servers and network solutions in Q1. Expect to see these processors as a new standard for mobile computing. Look for these chips taking over the industry in mid 2008.
