Air Force may suffer after PS3 OtherOS feature was cut

, May 13th 2010 Discuss [2]

When most Americans think about where the military spends its money, we think about things like $500 toilet seats and cheap items we can buy at the stores that the military pays huge money for. The US Air Force was conducting some tests on using the PS3 and its cell processor as a cheap and very powerful computing platform. Read The Full Story

Nintendo Wii and DSi sales tumble

, May 6th 2010 Discuss [1]

Nintendo have announced their latest quarterly financial results [PDF link], and it proved a disappointing period for both Wii and DSi sales.  Wii demand plummeted, falling 21-percent from the same period a year ago, while DSi sales dropped 13-percent.  The company has blamed poor flagship Wii game title releases for middling demand for the console, and are looking to the new 3D-capable Nintendo 3DS to salve further handheld shortfalls. Black Nintendo Wii Shows up Early in Canadian Best Buy

, May 5th 2010 Discuss [0]

It must be May 9th, right? Surely it is, because that's the only reason we'd be seeing a fully boxed, still shiny, Nintendo Wii in black at a retail store, right? Well, unless you're a devilish employee who likes to send out leaked, early shots of said items, then we'd probably have a situation like we do right here. As you can see, that's definitely the black Nintendo Wii, and it's finally --finally-- showing up in North American retail stores. Read The Full Story

Bungie Buddies Up With Activision for 10-Year Deal

, Apr 29th 2010 Discuss [0]

Even more out of left-field than HP buying Palm, Activision and Bungie come out of nowhere and announce that the two companies have just agreed to a multiple-year, worldwide exclusive agreement. Before you jump the gun, though, that doesn't mean that Halo Reach will be coming to more consoles than Microsoft's Xbox 360, but it does mean that their future titles will be doing just that. Nintendo black Wii US launch leak prompts GameStop threats

, Apr 29th 2010 Discuss [0]

The black version of the Nintendo Wii isn't exactly a huge mystery - after all, it's been on sale in Japan since last year - but its US arrival was meant to be.  An announcement that the black version was seeing a US launch was expected at E3 2010, and promotional material leaking out of GameStop definitely confirms it's on the way.  Unfortunately, Nintendo aren't at all pleased about their story being scooped, and have apparently threatened GameStop with a firm spanking; that's prompted the retailer to castigate all employees for wanting to "seem cool" by sharing pre-announcement details with blogs. Black Nintendo Wii Could be Coming to the States After All

, Apr 27th 2010 Discuss [0]

When the black Nintendo Wii was announced for Japan last year, it was one of the most hotly anticipated pieces of technology here in the States, at least for a few months. That probably wavered, a lot, when a month after that announcement, Nintendo came forward and revealed that the coveted piece of tech wouldn't be coming to the United States. It only got worse when European "limited edition" models started showing up in Europe near the holiday season, but there was still no US launch date. Well, things may be changing for the better. Sony PS3 3D games: graphics compromise for stereoscopic fun

, Apr 23rd 2010 Discuss [0]

Sony are slowly ramping up for 3D gaming on the PS3, but until now we haven't know exactly how titles will be prepared for the stereoscopic experience.  Digital Foundry have been talking to the Sony team responsible for the system, and unsurprisingly it's all pretty complex.  Existing 2D titles - such as Wipeout - are either being retrofitted for 3D by basically halving the current visual content (in Wipeout's case, going roughly from 2D 1080p 60fps to 3D 720p 30fps) or by artificially adding in depth data using the same system as Sony Pictures do for some of their 3D feature films. Sony PS3 3.30 firmware preps for 3D, quietly updates TOS

, Apr 22nd 2010 Discuss [2]

Sony are pushing out a new PlayStation 3 firmware update, which - among the changes - supposedly "preps" the console for the upcoming addition of 3D stereoscopic gaming.  PS3 3.30 System Software makes trophy sorting more straightforward, with new ways to view achievements, but the firmware supposedly brings with it an updated Terms of Service (TOS) agreement to which PS3 users must agree.  Among the TOS changes are apparently permission for Sony to automatically update or change content, services and functionality on PS3 or PSP hardware, without requiring owner permission. Game piracy costs Nintendo 45% of Euro DS game sales

, Apr 20th 2010 Discuss [0]

Nintendo are blaming rampant piracy for a 45-percent drop in European DS game sales, pointing to so-called "magicom" or "R4" cartridges - which bypass copy protection and allow downloaded game ROMs to be played on the handheld - as the primary cause.  The hacks have previously been a significant issue in Japan, but have more recently spread to Europe; Italy, Spain and France are particular hotspots, apparently.
