Just because one of the best-known computer companies in the world is trying to crush you in court, doesn’t mean you should stop pumping out clone computers using their OS.  Psystar has taken a break from accusing Apple of “stretching” copyright law to launch the Psystar Open(3), a compact mini-tower with a range of core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors, optional NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT graphics and, of course, Apple OS X.

steampunk frankenstein computer 1 269x480As insane Steampunk PC case mods go, this Frankenstein machine by D. Mattocks will take some beating.  Standing almost eight feet tall, and bristling with copper piping, vintage gauges and glass indicator lights from an old navy ship, it’s not so much a computer as a tribute to H.G. Wells, Dr Frankenstein and the sort of coffin Isambard Kingdom Brunel would’ve probably liked to be buried in.

The vent was salvaged from an old church, and now acts as the air inlet for the water-cooling system.  Meanwhile everything is backlight with green cold-cathode tubes, which manage to make the Frankenstein Computer look even more ominous.  Happily one of the gauges does actually show the computer temperature, though there’s probably not a steam blow-off valve.

External drive caddies have been a boon for anyone wanting to switch one hard-drive between several systems. Start playing with more than one drive, however, and opening up the caddy gets tiresome: instead, take a look at the “toaster” style drive dock. iStarUSA’s xAGE902-SAUF accepts both 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives in an easy-access top-loading slot. More than that, it offers no less than four different connection types – eSATA, USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 – to suit all but the most stubborn of systems. Is this the last drive dock you’ll ever need? SlashGear set to finding out.

One of Sony’s favorite things to say about the Vaio P is that it can fit in your pocket.  The prospect of having such a small device intrigued many people and made the Vaio P highly anticipated going into CES.  Good news?  The Vaio P seems like a great device.  Bad news?  It barely fits in your pocket, and Sony is paying the price.
