Back in November, we talked a bit about the tiny modular computer from Xi3 that had debuted and the machine showed up again at CES back in January. The company is back with a new version of that modular computer called the Xi3 ChromiumPC. It still has that modular design of the original machine we talked about and the main difference is that this one will run the Google Chrome OS. The company is mum on pricing, but it should be somewhere in the same $850 realm the other Xi3 computer was pegged for when it first launched.

The ChromiumPC runs the same layout inside the shiny (chrome naturally) chassis with three small interconnected boards that make the innards of the computer. The boards include the Processor Module, Primary I/O module and the Secondary I/O modules. Those three interconnected modules from the mainboard of the machine and pack in the microprocessor, RAM, and other features like video, and power connections.

The ChromiumPC will have dual and single-core 64-bit x86 based processors housed inside the shiny chassis that measures 4″ x 3.656″ x 3.656″ and the machine will be offered in more than just the chrome hue. Xi3 is mum on pricing at this point saying that the price will come “later this year” and that generally availability of the ChromiumPC will come in H2 2011. The company also notes that the Xi3 Modular Computer Series 5 will be available before July 4 of this year.

A lot of schools in the US and abroad have such a tight budget that things for kids to learn with like computers are hard to come by. When I was a kid, we learned some basic computer programming in school, but today many schools simply tech a child how to use basic things on the computer like word processing and general computer skills. Some schools don’t have enough computers for the students to use and having enough machines for each student to take on home to learn on is generally out of the question.

A game developer named David Braben from the UK has been working on an interesting project that is aimed at making a very cheap computer that schools can give to children and allow them to take home for use in learning computer science and how hardware works. Braben thinks that the state of education about computers in school today leaves a lot to be desired and even the little laptops like the XO from the OLPC are more expensive than many schools can afford.

The cool computer that Braben has developed is very small and looks more like a flash drive than a computer. The device uses a stick design with an HDMI port on one end and a USB port on the other. The HDMI port is used to shoot video out to a TV or display and the USB port on the other end is for connecting the computer. The hardware on the stick computer is a 700MHz ARM11 processor coupled with 128MB of RAM. The small stick computer has OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible graphics, and storage is taken care of by a SD card slot. The computer can also have accessories attached to it. In the photo, a 12MP camera is attached and the device runs Linux. The price for the hardware is only about $25 making this very affordable.

Welcome to another edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! Early Monday I ran across a cool printer hack that turns your ink jet into a printer that prints with invisible ink. The ink is lemon juice and the person that needs to read the invisible ink sprays it with an iodine solution to make the letters viewable. The commercial for the Touchwood SH-08C from DoCoMo has turned up on YouTube. The commercial uses a big handmade wooden ramp with xylophone keys that play classical music when a ball rolls down the ramp.

A dude showed off the prank he played on his wife on April Fool’s day. He took his name on her iPhone, changed it to AP Mobile, and then sent a text saying that the Pentagon had confirmed the Roswell crash was alien. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer got its official product page Monday. The official product page turned up cementing the final information missing for consumers, though we already knew all there was to know about the Transformer.

Anonymous has hacked Playstation.com and Sony.com as part of its retaliation against the legal action with GeoHot and other hackers by Sony. I am sure this will only lead to more legal action by Sony. What may be the coolest Wii mod ever turned up Monday called the Wii UNLimited Edition. The hack out the Wii components inside a different case that is liquid cooled.

Hackers have accessed the database of one of the largest email marketing firms out there called Epsilon. The hack opened up email addresses belonging to customers of JPMorgan Chase & Co, Kroger, Capital One Financial, and TiVo to more spam. Nikon unveiled a cool new DSLR camera this week called the D5100. The camera is reasonably priced at about $900 in kit form, records HD movies, and has up to ISO 102,400 when extended plus lots more.

Ubisoft Battle Tag has crossed the FCC. This is sort of like laser tag for the kids of today. Developers of Android apps are saying that fragmentation in the Android market is a huge problem. The fragmentation is thanks to a bunch of different OS versions and different handsets with vastly different capabilities.

A prototype leaked that is supposed to be a 5th generation iPod touch with 128GB of storage inside. The image also shows that the physical home button on the device has been replaced with a capacitive one. A strange product that is likely fake surfaced called the RE-35 that looks like a can of film for 35mm. The device supposedly has a sensor that makes your 35mm camera into a digital camera to print digital prints.

Analysts are claiming that the Motorola Xoom and Atrix 4G are failures. The claim comes after the analyst did channel checks and found sell-through to be low thanks to stiff competition on the market. A cool all-touch HP webOS flavor called Stingray leaked mid-week with the Verizon Pre3 smartphone. The OS would make the keyboard free smartphone work better and might get HP back into the smartphone market if the Pre3 doesn’t suck.

We put up our review of the T-Mobile Nokia C7 Astound this week. We think it could be a contender, but has less mindshare than Apple and Android devices. GameStop has confirmed plans to offer a gaming tablet later in 2011. Right now, the company is still trying to decide on using its own design or another slate design available via OEMs.

Apple has rejected an iPhone app for lack of functionality that offered all iAds in one place. The crazy thing is that Apple later offered its own app that does the same thing. Michelin has developed new inner tubes for bicycle tires that can repair their own punctures. The tubes use a special design and air pressure to seal the puncture and have a fluid inside to seal the puncture as well.

The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 has been spied in the wild. It has a touchscreen and the QWERTY keyboard that BlackBerry is known for. Android is expected to own 49% of the smartphone market by the end of 2012. As Android is growing fast, Symbian will be shrinking nearly as quickly.

Geeks around in the 80′s will remember the Commodore 64 computer back then that was cool and really expensive. The Commodore name is back on a new computer that has Intel Atom power inside. Reports came in that a student is making $50,000 yearly jailbreaking iPhones. He started for friends and then put ads on Craigslist and turned it into a profitable business.

The FCC mandated new data roaming rules for AT&T and Verizon this week. The new rule forces the big carriers to open up their data networks to smaller carriers just as they do with voice networks. Apparently a geek picked up a very cheap 500GB HDD that was a Chinese knock off of a real HDD with 500GB of storage. Unsurprisingly the thing didn’t work and when it was opened it has short-term memory inside not HDD storage.

AMD has been trying to round up some new Andorid talent for its operations. The company is looking at offering chipsets and other hardware with support for the Android OS. If you are a fan of the video game Portal, you will be glad to hear that Portal 2 is almost here. The game is set to come out on April 19.

An elementary school in Main is issuing iPad 2 tablets to Kindergarten students for free. A teacher found with her own iPad 2 that the tablet helps kids having trouble learning significantly and the school board was so impressed that they voted to purchase the tablets for all kids. Thanks for reading this week’s edition, see you next time!

Way back in the 80′s when I was a little geek I wanted a Commodore 64 so bad I could hardly stand it. My parents wouldn’t spring for the beast back then and I ended up with the TI-99/4A and remained bitter about it each time I went to the store and saw all the cool games Commodore 64 had. I mentioned last summer that the Commodore name was coming back and like most things from my youth be it a movie or toys commodore has decided to go retro with the new machine.

Details of the new Commodore started to surface again this week. The company has decided to go retro in a big way and has given the new machine the same skin as the old 80′s computer and I love it. The thing looks like the 80′s computer on the surface, but underneath it’s all modern. The new Commodore is cheaper than the original that sold for nearly $600 back in the day, at least in some of its new iterations.

The official price ranges from $250 to $900. Inside the beast are an Intel D525 processor, Intel NM10 chipset and ION 2 Graphics. The machine gets up to 4GB of RAM, Realtek 6-ch audio, and it has dual SATA 2 ports inside for storage. You can see from the pics that the thing has a CD drive and a memory card reader along with all the outputs we expect from a modern computer on the back. The machine has a heck of a price range and I don’t note options that would drive the price up $650.

Commodore CEO Barry Altman says that the response to the machine has been “completely dramatic.” I am not surprised, there are hoards of geeks that were in grade school like me when this thing came out that couldn’t hope to afford the $600 price tag in the 80′s that can certainly plunk down the loot this thing demands today.

If you work in an office where you have lots of people sitting very close to you it may drive you crazy that most mice and keyboards are so noisy. If you want a mouse that makes no noise at all, that can be hard to find. Every mouse I have ever used has made clicking sounds when you hit a button or scroll the mouse wheel.

A company called Nexus has a new mouse called the Silent Mouse that has a new patented switch for the button that makes no sound when used. The mouse is also wireless with 2.4GHz tech for good range and low latency. The mouse uses a tiny nano receiver.

I really like the nano style receivers since you can plug them into a notebook and just leave them. The mouse has 1000 or 1600 dpi sensitivity with a switch to choose. That is more than your average mouse offers at 800dpi and will be welcome by users that have big screens on their computer. Check out the video below to see the mouse in action.

The world has gone tablet PC crazy over the months since the iPad hit store shelves. If a maker is capable of talking about making a tablet or actually producing one they are hard at work right now. bModo isn’t a company that I have heard of before, but the firm has announced its first tablet PC running Windows 7 and it looks pretty darn cool.

The tablet is called the bModo12 and the thing runs Windows 7 as an operating system. The company says that the tablet combines the best features of the iPad, a tablet, and a notebook PC with a variety of connectivity and inputs. Connectivity includes dual USB ports, SD card slot, an HDMI port, a SIM card slot and an OMTP port. The bModo12 also has a VGA camera for video chatting capability and has an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor inside. People that actually need to work while on the road will be glad to hear that the thing supports Office, Outlook, Acrobat, Photoshop, Flash, Skype and just about any other software that you might need to get your business done.

Storage is to a 32GB SSD and the screen is 11.6-inches with HD resolution. 3G connectivity and WiFi get you online and the tablet has Bluetooth as well as support for a docking station that will be offered in January. The tablet measures in at 11.61″ x 7.68″ x 0.55″ and weighs under 2.2 pounds. Pre-orders will start “shortly” and that will bring with it the key bit of missing info- the price.

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Week in Review! Early in the week Fujifilm unveiled a cool new hybrid viewfinder digital camera called the X100. The little digital camera has a 13.2-megapixel sensor and retro style that looks really nice. Some details on HTC’s Android tablet surfaced early in the week. Those details point to a price of $790 and Tegra 2 for the brains of the device. That tablet will be a hard sale at that price I think.

The geeks at iFixit have taken the new PlayStation Move controllers and torn them down. Inside the black case are some parts that can be replaced easily like the battery and vibration motor while others are permanently attached to the board inside. A sweet gaming mod turned up early in the week that has 11 different consoles, a projector and other gear crammed inside a replica of R2D2. The thing has a GameCube, N64, NES, SNES, Atari 7800, PSP, DreamCast and other consoles inside.

We reviewed the Clearwire Rover Puck Monday and while it is cool in a 4G area, travel outside that area and you get squat. The thing doesn’t support 3G networks as a way to cut the price of the device. A report from an analyst surfaced that points to a new iPad coming in 2011 with a smaller 7-inch screen and a pair of cameras. Presumably, those cameras would be for FaceTime and shooting photos.

Rumors surfaced that ARM might be acquired by Apple. ARM came back and called those rumors “complete nonsensical” though it wouldn’t be the first time something was denied outright and then turned out to be true. Leica unveiled its sweet M9 limited edition Titanium digital camera. The thing gets a titanium case and a few other new features.

Headcase unveiled the coolest case ever for the iPad called the Etch A Sketch Case. The case makes your iPad look just like an Etch A Sketch; all it needs is an app for actually drawing and a couple white knobs that actually work. Panasonic unveiled a 3D lens that will be launching soon that allows any micro four-thirds G-series camera to shoot 3D images.

Sony officially launched the 3.50 firmware update for the PS3 that brings support for Blu-ray 3D flicks. The update adds little else to the mix. Scosche freedomMIC for the Flip line of camcorders. The mic has a wireless section that attaches to your lapel.

We reviewed the Mac Pro for 2010 and the unit we got hands on with is a mid-range machine. We liked the machine and it did well running Windows 7 in Boot Camp as well. AT&T has said that it isn’t worried about losing customers if the iPhone goes to Verizon. I still say they might not loose current customers because of contracts, but new iPhone customers may migrate to Verizon instead.

Quirky unveiled a cool new backpack that charges your gadgets with its own internal battery called the Trek Support. It can charge three gadgets at one time that use USB ports and is up for pre-order for $130. ThinkGeek unveiled a new pizza cutter that looks like the Enterprise NCC-1701 from Star Trek. It’s the geekiest and coolest pizza cutter in the history of pizza.

An analyst has cited sources that claim the iPhone 4 for Verizon will go into production in December. This is great news for Verizon fans and hopefully it proves to be true. Kensington unveiled a cool new iPad case called the KeyFolio that has a keyboard inside. The keyboard connects to the iPad using Bluetooth and has rubber keys to keep from scratching the screen of the iPad.

A tip points to a couple new INQ Mobile Facebook phones in 2011. The phones could potentially be on AT&T in the July or August time frame of 2011.

ThinkGeek pulled the wraps off a new iPhone case that adds a keyboard to your iPhone called the TK-421. The Bluetooth keyboard lets you type all you want with real keys and versions are available for the 3GS and iPhone 4. Marvell has unveiled a cool tri-core processor for smartphones and tablets. The processor is the Armada 628 and has a single low power 624MHz core for the functions of the smartphone or tablet and two faster 1.5GHz cores for other tasks.

The WeTab tablet has gone on sale and landed in its own video unboxing. The thing sells for €449 for a 16GB version and has some nice specs. SteelSeries has unveiled a new keyboard called the Shift that has interchangeable key sets. This is the latest version of that old Ideazon Zboard that SteelSeries snapped up a while back.

The iPhone, iPad, and iPod were all turned into cool DIY walking robots. The bots are complete with an animated screen with eyes that flick back and forth. A geek has created the most awesome costume in the history of Halloween. The costume is a full size version of the power loader from the Aliens flick.

A concept mobile phone from Mozilla called the Seabird surfaced late in the week. The coolest feature is the multi-angle pico projectors inside the thing. The Notion Ink Adam tablet may launch in several colors when it hits the market. The thing has a camera with extra swivel range for easier photo taking among other nice features.

The iPhone 4 may well be on the way to the Verizon network, but will Verizon accept Apple’s contract terms? The thought is that the iPhone on Verizon may risk the Android market it has carved out for itself. Thanks for reading this week’s edition! See you next week!
