GEAR4 is back with another awesome iOS accessory and has just announced their Renew SleepClock will be hitting Apple’s retail stores in the US starting in March for just $199. Their alarm clock offers a few unique and special features that make that price seem not so high. They’ve added two sensors for monitoring breathing and movement, allowing the free iOS app to log sleep cycles.

The Renew SleepClock uses a non-contact sensor (as in no watches, or wristbands) to measure your breathing rates and movements. It knows when users are asleep and will measure your patterns and wake you up and the perfect moment. The SleepClock will pick the lightest moment in the users sleep cycle to alarm — making for a more relaxed wake period that will leave you alert and refreshed in the morning. No more needing 3 cups of coffee to start your day.

Their app will monitor patterns and you can check to see how well you are/aren’t sleeping at night. You can check these stats by the day or week and even compare against other SleekClock users. GEAR4 offers fading playlists to put you to sleep, and multiple settings for the alarm chime come morning. With sounds from the radio, iPod playlists, or even gentle and calming sounds are all available.

This week the folks at Cadence watch company have enlisted the help of Chris Thompson, a fellow known for his creation of the “Math Clock,” to create a new timepiece by the name of Radian Watch — my question for you, readers, is how relevant you find wristwatches in general? What we’ve got here is the assignment of Thompson as a new Creative Director for the Cadence watch company as well as his showing of the Radian Watch which uses equations around the face to show the time. Of course aside from this watch being made with high quality materials, would you consider this relevant to your interests as a gadget and technology reader?

This watch is one that’s meant to speak to mathematic geeks and will be produced by the Philadelphia-based Cadence watch company soon. This watch combines the unit circle with the 12 hour dial like you’d normally see, but wait – right there at the 3 position is a 0, and pi sits where you’d normally see a 9. The angle measurements at each of the hours are called out by Thompson, and the eighths are in there as well. All this make sense to you?

Behind the numbers that’s no ordinary twirl, that’s the Archimedean spiral, one that graphs the equation r = a + bθ, and is described as looking “cool” by Thompson, who placed it there for that reason, of course. You can win one of these watches by simply placing your email in the slot on a Radian watch giveaway page at Cadence, or just wait a brief period before the watch is release formally. Look like something you’d wear to your local math convention? How about a present for your favorite math professor?

And for the inevitable commenters screwing up their fingernails typing furiously on what the definition of the word “technology” is, the real question is this: are you, the SlashGear reader, interested in seeing non-digital watches daily?

If you’re in to strange timepieces and are unaware of the brand Nooka, you’ll be extra surprised by the Hello Kitty Zub Zirc watch you’re about to see. What we’ve got here is Nooka’s first collaboration with international lifestyle brand, fashion brand, and cutest creator of every kind of product under the sun Sanrio and the super wild watchmakers Nooka. This timepiece is both limited edition and contains several of Nooka’s signature above-average clock mechanisms.

It’s the unmistakable set of Hello Kitty’s ear bow, ears, and nose, set amongst Nooka’s classic Zub Zirc face. In the upper left-hand corner you’ll find what you’ll easily recognize as an abstraction of a conventional analog clock. Below this you’ll find the minutes of the hour ticking away along a line of digitally-placed marks, along with AM and PM marks to the right of the circle. Control buttons sit around the outer bits of the face, and the whole casing is white outside the printing of the kitty face.

This device is going to cost you $130 USD if you pick it up today, and take note, because the innards as well as the outer bits are high quality. This watch has 3ATM water resistance, alarm, chronograph, date, time, and the display is TDF LCD Display that’s Electroluminescent(EL). The lens is Mineral Crystal, the case back is Stainless Steel, and you get a 1 year warranty right out of the box.

The box, by the way, is what Nooka calls an exclusive siliconezone food-grade silicone package that you’ll be able to use for cooking and general storage if you wish. What a wacky green situation! Pick this device up over at Nooka.

Today the watchmakers at Cadence have announced their brand new Fall lineup of 4-Bit Watches, each of them in celebration of Binary Day: 1/11/11! That’s today, if you did not know, and the collection includes a fine trio: 4-Bit Retrograde, 4-Bit UTC Chrono and 4-Bit Chrono. A 4-bit watch in this case means that the usual roman numerals around the face of the clock have been replaced by 4-bit binary graphics. 1 and O and 1 and 0 until you understand how to speak Computer.

These watches are utterly simplistic, having just a simple leather wristband and a 43mm stainless steel casing around the clock which display which has several different optional sets of information. For the 4-Bit Retrograde, you’ve got the same binary clock times with the ability to display dual time or Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) so you’ll be sure to be able to get to where you’re going without worrying any face is slow. You’ll have the choice of either a white or a black face with features in the opposite color.

Next there’s the 4-Bit UTC Chrono, which, as the name suggests, has a chonograph on the face. You’ll get the same 42mm stainless steel case and some lovely luminescent hands to show up smoothly across the black face of the watch – plus the UTC to keep you synced. Finally there’s the 4-Bit Chrono, which is essentially the same watch at the UTC Chrono but without the UTC. Each of these watches uses a Japanese Miyota movement, this meaning you’ll never have to wind the watch, plus a sapphire coated quartz glass to prevent the face of the watch from getting all scuffed up with scratches.

The 4-Bit Chrono and the 4-Bit Retrograde will cost you $185 while the 4-Bit UTC Chrono jumps up slightly to $195. There’s also a Binary Day sale going on today which will get you 25% off on any of these watches. Grab em at Cadence Watch Company (if they’re not up when you click in, they’ll either be available later today or they’re completely sold out.)

This clock under construction inside a series of caves made inside a mountain in the West Texas Sierra Diablo mountain range proves that things really are bigger in Texas. The clock is designed to keep time for the next ten thousand years. It won’t be complete for many years to come, but when it is finished, it will be so awesome. The clock is apparently being designed so that the small hand moves only once per year, the larger hand moves once per century, and the thing will ring in the millennium with a special chime.

People will be able to visit the clock and will enter via the rugged cave you see here. You can see in the photos of the giant silver colored gear just how large the clock will be. The design of the clock will allow it to make a different bell ringing sequence each day for the next 10,000 years. The construction team is carving five chambers into the mountain to celebrate certain anniversaries of the clock. The chambers will be for the 1-year, 10-year, 100-year, 1000-year, and 10,000 year anniversaries. The one-year chamber has inside a special orrery that highlights humankind’s first century in space.

The clock will activate and run the special orrery once per year on a pre-determined date at solar noon. The team will build the animations for the fist and tenth anniversaries, but will leave the 100, 1,000, and 10,000 for future generations to decide. The build team will provide the mechanical interface into the chambers that will provide the future builders with power and the correct clock triggering events. How awesome is this project?

I bet you remember that Cadence 4-bit watch that we talked about while back, we even gave a few of them away to readers. Cadence is back with the sibling to that watch you wear for those that can’t bring them to wear a wristwatch even if it is geeky cool like that Cadence watch. This new product is the Cadence 4-bit Wall Clock. It is very similar in design to the wristwatch with rows of four blocks for numbers.

Like the wristwatch, the shading of those four blocks tells you what the time is and represent numbers based on binary numbers. The clock has a 13.25″ diameter face and a shatter resistant polycarbonate crystal. The movement is battery-powered quartz. The power source is a single AA battery and the clock is made here in the US.

The watch will hit pre-order at the end of June for $68 and pre-orders get a 40% discount. “Following enthusiastic response among computer geeks in regards to the 4-Bit Watches, we are proud to give the home and office some attention,“ says Vanya Buvac, President of Cadence Watch Company. “The wall clock is subtle enough to disguise your inner geek, but stylish enough to hang proudly on you wall.”

At first glance, it looks like Tron missed his identity disc when it was flicked back to him from someone he was trying to derez. This is actually an interesting concept clock that has turned up over on Yanko Design. Designers really like to create wild clocks that are only marginally capable of actually telling the user what time it is. The clock is filled with what appears to be colored water and has some sort of mechanism inside to change the level of the liquid.

The changing liquid level tells the user what time it is. The Aqua clock was designed by Branislav Sipka and there are no tips on exactly how to read the thing. I notice it has markings around the inner circle of the frame. There are 12 of those marks on each side. It would be easy enough to assume that the level of the liquid inside represents the hour of the day.

If that is correct then the clock in the photos would be showing three as the hour. I see no way to tell what the minutes are. I also notice that the clock has a metal tube on the bottom. I wonder if the liquid in the clock drains out of that tube as the hours march by. It could be that this clock only tells you the approximate time of day.

The geek and design world has its fair share of odd clocks and wristwatches. Generally, the things are very hard to read, and if you need the exact time, you may be out of luck. If you only need to know that it’s about 4:30 and not that it’s 4:35 you can get by with most of these clocks and watches though. A new wall clock concept has surfaced from designer Jay Jiwoong Baek and its cool looking. The Eclipsion Wall clock reminds me of what a Tokyoflash wall clock might look like.

The clock comes in white or black versions and has no numbers on the face. The hour hand has a large white circle on it, and the minute hand has a smaller circle with a black center. The idea is that the clock looks like a solar eclipse. The hands are so large that you will only get the approximate time though so this might not be the thing for the habitually punctual. That red dot is roughly at the 12 setting on the clock.

As the time changes the two hands near the eclipse spot giving the clock its name. This is an interesting design. Taking the circles out of the equation, it reminds me of a clock made from an old speaker and a Roomba. The design is a concept form right now, but I can see this thing in a fancy home office with modern decorations.

Any audiophile will probably recognize the McIntosh name as the maker of some very expensive and high-end audio gear that has a very retro look to it. The company has announced a new clock for fans of its gear that has the same front styling as its other gear.

The clock is called the MCLK12 and it’s the front of one of the firm’s power amps with hours and minutes on the analog gauges. The gauges on audio gear would show the watts you were putting out and in the clock the left gauge is hours and the right side is minutes.

If you are an audiophile, you might be thinking this would look great on your wall even if you can’t afford McIntosh audio gear. The problem is that this clock costs more than most audio gear does with a price of $2000.

If you’re a fan of dominos, then maybe you should take a second look at these huge blocks. Not only can they be hung from a wall, but they will also stand on their own somewhere in your lovely abode, all the while telling you the time. Thanks to Carbon Design Group, this new Domino Clock is a concept that, if everything goes to plan, will be made into a real working clock in the early part of 2011.

The concept design is a pretty simple one. It’s three dominos, put right next to one another, which are connected wirelessly. The dots on the face of the blocks are what tell you the time. The articulated “dots” will flip back and forth, and create the design on the front of the block to tell you the time in hours, and minutes. Right now, as we mentioned above, the Domino Clock is regrettably just a concept design, but the folks at Carbon Design are planning on making it a real thing in 2011. They plan on hanging it up on their office wall. Of course, we hope they start dreaming a bit bigger, and offer it to the general populace. It really would make a great wall ornament in the office.

The clock is called the Lego Minifig Alarm Clock and the clock looks like a giant Lego minifig character. You can get the cool clock in Darth Vader or Storm Trooper styles and they look really cool. The characters have posable arms and legs so you can stand them up or sit them down.

The characters are 8-inches tall and have the alarm clock in the chest. The clocks are aimed at kids 6 and up. They are appropriate for 30 something geeks too. The clocks are in stock right now for $29.99.

The transition from Daylight Savings Time over the weekend has prompted iPhone headaches, with the Apple smartphone’s alarm app apparently ignoring the hour’s difference despite the clock showing the correct time. Complaints are already flooding Twitter, as confused iPhone owners find their alarms going off an hour late (giving them double that precious extra sixty minutes of Monday sleep we only get once a year).

The issue seems to be an iOS 4 one, which means anybody still running iOS 3.x should have no problems getting up on time. Some iOS 4.1 owners have also reported having no issues. Apple is yet to comment on the issue, but we’re guessing there will be engineers adding another bug to the to-do list.

While some alarm clocks out there may use “out of the box” ideas to wake you up, some of them like to keep it simple. The Altaz Internet Clock radio may feature plenty of extras in the package, but at its core it’s still just a clock. Fortunately, though, if you do happen to wake up on the wrong side of the bed, hopefully you’ll be able to lighten the mood with your favorite pictures displayed right there for you, or maybe the weather forecast for the day. Either way, the Internet Clock Radio has the power to try and give you what you want.

The new Internet Clock radio allows for you to interact with it via a 3.5-inch touchscreen display. You’ll be able to access photos from Flickr, as well as get a full weather forecast when you need it. The radio will also let you play music, watch videos, and access “all the Internet has to offer.” The result is “endless entertainment while serving as a source of information that users will find both enjoyable and useful.” The clock also features an SD card reader, integrated WiFi, and a built-in battery. You can find it on Amazon right now for an MSRP of $99.

Generally, when we see weird clocks they are watches from Tokyoflash. If Tokyoflash made wall clocks, this would be what they offered. The clock is really big and called Order in Chaos. The clock looks like it has broken into lots of pieces with a single hand in the middle and numbers that are broken.

The single hand is for the minutes and the hour is told by finding the least broken number on the clock. In the instance of the first big image above the time is 12:10. Some of the numbers still look too broken up to me when they are supposed to be active. You can watch the flash demonstration of the clock here to get an idea how the movement works.

As the hours change, the numbers are gradually less fragmented according to the designer. The point of the clock is to illustrate the “self paradigm to overcome the anarchy in you and connect with the universe.” If you can’t live without the clock, you can order your own customized version now for $2000 plus shipping.

If you like to keep up on all of the latest news, and your phone and computer just aren’t good enough, maybe you need to get a clock at the side of your bed that will let you know what’s happening on all of your favorite sites, courtesy of their RSS feed. That’s exactly what the Excalibur Wireless News Ticker does, and thanks to the FCC, it will be making its way to the retail market some time in the near future.

As you can see from the image above, the Wireless News Ticker isn’t meant to catch your eye with all of its flashy colors. The black-on-gray display will show you your local weather, the day (courtesy of the calendar), as well as the time. Underneath that, you’ll be able to watch your RSS feed tick on by. You’ll need four AA batteries to make sure you’re wireless ticker is powered up nicely.

The wireless device can do this thanks to the USB dongle, which will stream your RSS feeds from your PC. You’ll have to load up some software to make everything work properly, and right now it looks like it only supports Windows-based machines. And if you find you care more about your sports, or weather, then maybe the Weather Channel’s or Fox Sport’s branded versions of the device, which prioritize their particular focus of the news. Unfortunately, there’s no word on a release date quite yet, nor how much this guy will cost.

The most accurate clocks in the world today are atomic clocks. These clocks are very important to all manner of things from space travel to synchronization of military efforts. Scientists have discovered what may be an even more accurate clock than the atomic variety.

Astronomers have discovered that Pulsars may be usable as a means of getting a more accurate clock. The thing that has kept the pulsar from being viable as a clock until now is that the pulsating was slightly out of state.

A team of scientists from the UK has determined that a pulsar switches between to spin-down rates abruptly and unpredictably. The team says that a detailed study of the pulsars light will allow the application of a correction formula to improve the capability of the pulsar to be used for a clock. The hope is that a pulsar clock can be applied to gravitational waves. These gravitational waves have never been observed, but were suggested by Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

We might not be the biggest fans of traditional time telling, or clocks for that matter, but then again, if you’ve got something like the Attrito, how could you not be? Of course, our tastes for clocks might range on the strange side, or maybe even to the elegant, and that’s why we think the Attrito stands out: it’s the best of both worlds. When’s the last time you saw a clock that was a pole, right?

Attrito means “friction” in Italian, and why were can’t say for sure which part of these clocks necessarily represents “friction,” we’ll go ahead and leave it alone. Besides, we’re not calling it “friction.” Attrito has a ring to it. The designer’s name is Shane Roepe, and he’s successfully made some gorgeous concepts of how he imagines time should be showcased in your home, or office. Attrito consists of two bars, or poles, which hang from the wall parallel to one another. The bar on the left displays the hours, while the one on the right counts the minutes of each hour in increments of five.

You are shown the numbers thanks to laser engraving, which is then highlighted by LED backlighting. There’s an enclosure within the pole that slides up and down, apparently, and as it does it shows you the correct time. We have to wonder if that enclosure sliding up and down makes any sound, or if it might be too loud for normal use in the office. Then again, as attractive as the whole set up is, we could see ourselves working past the kinks. We especially love the blue lights representing the time. Something futuristic about blue lights.

There has to be a fine line between our alarm clocks getting smarter. Or, maybe not smarter, but rather easier to control. Because, we don’t know about you, but the only way our alarm clock wakes us up, is if we have to get out of bed to turn it off. Then again, there has to be something said about an alarm clock we can talk to. And, even better, that does what we tell it to do. We love our voice commands, after all.

We’d tell you to meet Moshi, but you already have. In another form, of course. And this new version, the Voice Control Digital Clock Radio, which has more features than the previous version. However, you still say “Hello Moshi,” to activate it, which we think is pretty cool. It’s not often we get to introduce ourselves (and it make sense) to our gadgets. Once you activate it, Moshi will recognize 11 different voice commands, which include setting the time, activating the radio, and setting the alarm.

It works on Technology That Listens, which is a cute little name for a technology that makes gadgets accept voice commands. And yes, you can tell your clock to snooze, but, like we said, that probably means there’s going to be a lot more missed meetings out there. If you’re interested, you can pick up the Moshi Voice Control Digital Clock Radio right now for $69.99.

I have seen a lot of strange wrist watches come across Yanko Design, but a strange wall clock is relatively rare. The new Dwell clock uses straight sticks that move to tell time.

In the center of the clock is a silver bar with windows on it. The time shows when the correct number printed on each stick aligns with the windowed bar. At 12:31 the clock is at its longest height of 438mm and its shortest height is 256mm.

I really like this design and as simple as it looks on the outside, the Dwell clock is surprisingly complex on the inside with gears and other stuff to make it work. Too bad it’s only a concept; I’d like one of these in my office.

We’re quite fond of bizarre gadgets that hook into Twitter, whether they be tweeting tables, monomes or robot fish, and so we’re quite surprised that it’s taken someone so long to use the blue Twitter bird logo in a tweeting cuckoo clock. Happily Haroon Baig has filled that gap with his Twitwee Clock, a modified clock that replaces the traditional face with a set of chumby guts and keeps track of Twitter for a preset word, hashtag or username (in this case “TwitweeClock”).

Video demo after the cut

When that happens, the full tweet is automatically shown on the display, and the bird leaps out and – somewhat incongruously – cuckoos to alert you. Of course you can easily change the keyword, and thus be updated whenever someone mentions your own username or some topic you’re particularly interested in tracking. Just don’t make it Justin Bieber else you’ll never get any peace.

The chumby components hook up to an Arduino microcontroller, which is responsible for triggering the mechanical parts of the clock. Baig created a custom chumby widget for the software side, which hooks into the Twitter API.

While showing admirable recycling motivation, sticking a clock inside an old coffee can isn’t enough to impress us; Instructables member florinc makes the grade because his DIY IllyClock adds in some color magic too. Based on a Wiseduino – an Arduino clone with an integrated real-time clock – and an LED shield, the clock lights up its numerals in different shades depending on the time of day.

Video demo after the cut

Three hours before the alarm is set to go off, the numerals change from green to orange. Then, an hour before it’s due, they switch to red. The idea is that you can squint at the alarm clock in the night and tell roughly how much time you have left in bed without actually needing to decipher the actual time.

If you’re short-sighted then that could be a particularly handy feature. The Instructable is seemingly based on this previous IllyClock, as shown in the video below.

My wedding anniversary is this week and my wife has been strategically leaving catalogs from jewelry companies around the house with dog-eared pages. Not a very subtle hint at what she wants. A few of the pages are for those past, present, future diamond rings. I wonder if she would be happy with this new Past Present Future Watch, after all it’s the same idea as the ring right?

The watch is cool and looks sort of like one of those concept watches that have been popping up at Yanko Design, the difference here is that you can buy this watch right now for $100. The watch face is mostly just blank white space.

At the 11, 12, and 1 positions on the face are labels saying past, present, and future respectively. The time is showing in analog numbers that resemble digital digits. The outer time ring shows the hour and the inner ring shows the minutes in 5-minute increments. The watch is unisex with a 33mm face. The case is stainless steel and the band can be ordered in leather of stainless. The watch is water-resistant to 100 feet.

I have several HDDs crammed in the drawers of my desk that I don’t really have a use for. I have taken HDDs apart before just to see what was inside and a dude named Viacheslav Slavinsky has taken an old HDD and made one of the coolest clocks ever from the remains.

The dude etched numbers into the platter of the HDD somehow and strobes LEDs behind the numbers to show the time. Behind the platter is a PCB with its diffused LEDs in each character position that can be strobed independent of each other.

The platter of the HDD still spins crazy fast and as the platter spins and the LEDs strobe, you get a persistent display that shows the time. This is all kinds of cool; my kids have a couple foam fans that have words on the blades when they spin that uses similar tech. I wouldn’t want to touch that platter while the clock is in use and it’s rather loud to boot.

In most geek circles the Art. Lebedev Studio is still mostly known for its cool Optimus Maximus keyboard with the OLED key tops. The design studio appears to have a fascination with ancient Rome since most of its product names sound like gladiators to me. Such is the case with the latest concept from the company called the Segmentus, which sounds like something a gladiator slave would be tortured with if they failed to honor the ludus where they train.

Rather than some tool of torment, the Segmentus is a very cool clock that has hands like an analog clock by shows digital-style numbers. The hands move about making numbers that are rather difficult to read to show the time. The second count down with the little hands moving in unison is very cool.

The clock is shown in clear with black hands or a black version with white hands and measures 7.3″ x 16.9″ x 2.9″. I would totally hang this on my office wall even if I would end up watching it instead of working. Still in the concept stage, perhaps we will be able to buy the Segmentus at some point.

iLuv knows you have trouble getting up in the morning, and they want to help. The new iLuv iMM178 Vibe Plus is an alarm clock with a difference, and that difference is a “shake & awake” attachment on the end of a cord. Hide it under your pillow and, when the alarm goes off – which, since the iMM178 Vibe Plus is also an iPhone/iPod speaker dock, could mean your favorite playlist – it’ll shake you until you get up.

Personally, the thought of being vigorously assaulted every morning doesn’t exactly fill me with glee. Still, there’s an FM digital radio and stereo speakers if you’re not so tempted by the head-shaking, together with a handy volume control on the vibra-attachment as well as on the main body of the clock.

Alarm settings allow for every-day, workday or weekend use, with two alarms in case you share a bed. It’s compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone, iPod Touch 2nd generation, iPod Touch, iPod Nano 1st to 5th generation, iPod Classic, iPod with video, iPod 4th generation and iPod mini, and is available now priced at $89.99.

The first time he stared at a clock I bet he felt like I do right now looking at this Geek Clock. I have come to the realization that I am too dumb to tell time, at least on this thing. Thank all that is geeky and good my iPhone has a digital clock and I have a sundial in the garden out back.

This clock replaces the standard numbers that we all know and love with equations, which work out to the same old numbers. Go ahead and admit it, you are having to count the big marks to tell what time the clock shows right now aren’t you?

Good news is that the clock comes with a cheat sheet that explains what all of the formulas and other factors on the clock mean. Hang this in your room or office and at least you can pretend you really know what all those symbols mean. The clock sells for $25 and is available now.

We reckon this is a mod that could be pretty popular after the holidays, when people wonder what exactly they’re going to do with the non-wireless digital photo frames they’ve been given. Matt Mets took one look at his and decided it would make a great DIY Word Clock, stepping through slides with the time written out long-hand; a frame that can automatically change the image every sixty seconds would even be able to do all the clock-work for him.

The best laid plans don’t necessarily go as expected, however, and Matt had to get around the fact that his digital photo frame doesn’t actually have a one-minute frame shift. Instead he used an Arduino clone wired into the guts of the DPF that triggers the next-image button every minute.

His tutorial includes that code, but of course if you’ve got a suitably equipped frame you won’t have to go to such efforts. People are already suggesting different ways of displaying the time other than words – we’re particularly keen on the idea of lots of different clocks and watches.

The first generation of the system attempts to recognize the first few words in the tweet – it monitors a different Twitter stream for each hand – and then shuffles the indicators around to the appropriate point. If the message can’t be interpreted that way, it points to “read me”.

Video demo after the cut

Future versions, however, may be tied into Latitude so that location can be automatically figured out, and the somewhat jerky servos may be replaced by stepper motors for a more clock-like movement. I might be tempted to throw in a small display that would actually show the tweet itself, but maybe they don’t have LCDs in the Harry Potter universe; having never read the books I wouldn’t know.

As vaguely pointless but nonetheless desirable knick-nacks go, the Hermés 8 Day Spiral Boule Clock has to rank pretty high up on the list. A 1kg ball of magnifying-effect optical crystal, white gold and a total of 231 parts, the Spiral Boule is wound by twisting the two halves, while a single button on the base switches it into time-setting mode.

Inside, the simple hands move around the spiral clock face – also made of white gold – or you can flip it over to watch the mechanics at work. Hermés say there’s enough power for 200 hours of use in-between windings, and that the inspiration for the design was a classic clock at the company’s museum in Paris.

Of course, a large part of the appeal of something like this is the exclusivity. It’s apparently a one-off, and priced at an eye-watering $560,000. Despite it being roughly the size of a cricket ball, then, we’d recommend you not actually hit it with a bat.

I have seen more than a few weird clocks in my day and most of them had to do with waking people up who tend to oversleep. I had a clock when I was a kid that you had to throw to turn the alarm off. My mom took it away after I broke some pictures in my room and used my brother’s head as a target a few times. Ponoko has a line of clock like devices that you have to manually change the time on.

I guess these things could keep you busy, but really, they are weird. One of the devices is a will return clock that is like those that you see on the door at the some stores when they close for lunch. It is cooler than those round plastic clocks with the rotating arms are for sure.

I guess I could also see it being useful to teach kids how to tell time or something, but really a clock with hands is better suited for that. The things are expensive too with prices starting at $80 and going up to $115.

Have you ever looked at a digital clock and thought, “I hate numbers?” Well, if you have or you’re just looking or a little bit of a change of pace, then do we have something to show you. It’s called the QLOCKTWO, and it’s a modern-day great piece of tech. Instead of showing those bland numbers like so many other time pieces around the world, the QLOCKTWO utilizes a stainless steel face to hide away a wooden box that holds LEDs and all sorts of circuitry to get its message across. But there might be some fine details that could sway your decision one way or another, so take a peek.

The QLOCKTWO is designed by Biegert & Funk, and the clock itself is pretty entertaining, if nothing else. By utilizing the LEDs placed behind the stainless steel face, the QLOCKTWO presents the time in words, in a fairly simple way. “IT IS NINE O’CLOCK” and “IT IS TEN PAST SIX.” Tiny white dots at the corners of the clock display the individual minutes, and a giant dot-matrix appears with a flick of a switch, displaying the seconds. Plus, if you’re spoken language isn’t English, then you have a choice of others, like German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, or French.

The face can also be topped by an acrylic type, and painted. Biegert & Funk are also making the faceplate interchangeable, so that you can have all sorts of colors available to you. Here’s the bad news though: it isn’t cheap, by any means. The QLOCKTWO will run you $1,565, and the interchangeable face plates will be $136 a pop. Of course, the thing is very attractive and interesting, so if you have some cash to blow, take a shot at it. Or, you can check out the iPhone App (apparently they do have an app for that) for only .99 cents.

Now, it’s Bang & Olufsen time, so please suspend all disbelief and reset your “it’s how much?!” shock reaction. The Danish company has unveiled its latest product, and we’ve a feeling Alyson Hannigan would approve. The BeoTime alarm clock best resembles a flute, but is actually a way to not only get you up in the morning but to control your house full of expensive B&O A/V equipment.

Three small, square displays show the time, alarm time and which source will be used to rouse you. Switching on or off the alarm is done by the trumpet-style button on one end, and tapping or touching the BeoTime activates the screen backlighting. There’s also an optional wall-bracket, to which the BeoTime magnetically clips.

Picking it up, a tilt-sensor turns the BeoTime into a remote control, with the displays now switching to indicate which source is being managed. It will function as a sleep timer, volume & channel control or lighting control, depending on what B&O kit you’ve invested in.

As you’d expect, there’s a serious sting in the tail and that’s the price. When the Bang & Olufsen BeoTime is released in August 2009, it’ll have a an MRSP of $375.

Press Release:

Bang & Olufsen introduces BeoTime alarm clock complete with system integration capabilities

Bang & Olufsen, the Danish retailer of high-end audio and video products, launches the new BeoTime – an alarm clock that is equal parts stylish and functional. In addition to its time-telling operation, BeoTime also doubles as a control for Bang & Olufsen systems in the home.

“We are excited to introduce BeoTime to the Bang & Olufsen product porfolio,” said Zean Nielsen, President of Bang & Olufsen America. “We can offer high-end products at both ends of the price spectrum – from entry level to full home entertainment systerms.”

BeoTime features a built-in sleep timer which can switch all Bang & Olufsen equipment in the room to standby after a selected time interval of up to 120 minutes – a convenient feature for those who like to stay up watching television or fall asleep to the sound of a favorite CD without having to worry about turning the music off. In addition to the alarm and sleep timer functions, you can use BeoTime for basic operation of the bedroom television, loudspeakers, or light control. BeoTime also makes a unique desk clock, ideal for one’s work or home office.

BeoTime is characterized by a high degree of convenience and ease of use. It can be held in one hand and operated with one’s thumb. Through a built-in tilt sensor, display information and button functions change orientation in accordance with how BeoTime is held, left on the nightstand, or placed in its wall bracket.

Visual identity
The designer, Steffen Schmelling, was inspired by things that reminded him of a pleasant experience in waking up, and thus he thought of Mozart’s The Magic Flute – a story with wonderful music, in which light defeats dark, and there is an inherent mix between dream and fantasy. The “flute” was an obvious design choice to represent such surreal disposition.

BeoTime is a beautifully anodised and polished aluminium tube, with a trumpet-shaped button that protrudes from one end when the alarm is activated. The button clicks in and out when pressed (reminiscent of a classic alarm clock) and is used to switch the alarm on and off. At the other end of the tube, a cover conceals the battery compartment for three batteries with a life of approximately one-year. Two rubber feet, one at each end of the tube, keep BeoTime steady when placed on a table surface. For wall-mounting, BeoTime rests in an almost invisible magnetic wall bracket.

Menu navigation is done with the main square button in the center of the unit. Three separate square displays, which feature dark text on a bright background, show the present time, alarm time, and wake-up source (alarm chime versus audio system). The current time is always visible, and because of a built-in motion sensor, the display backlight is activated by a simple touch, e.g. to check the time during the night.

BeoTime will be available at all Bang & Olufsen showrooms August 2009. MSRP $375.00.

[Thanks Sarah!]

When you’re facing down an inbox full of press releases and an empty frontpage, the prospect of pausing time sounds like a tempting one. Artist Ryan Harc can’t quite offer mastery over the aging process, but if you’re of the opinion that what you haven’t seen can’t hurt you then his Time Switch may have all the denial you need.

Ostensibly resembling a simple wall-switch, turn the timepiece on and the ghostly red digits swim into focus through the plastic shell. Feeling overwhelmed by deadlines? Flick the switch again and the clock disappears.

“Whenever I screw up and the deadline ties me up, I always think. “I wanna stop the time.” Of course I know nobody can do that. But instead of stopping the time, at least I might forget about it. That’s the starting of the idea. This clock is for people who want to turn the time off for a while. It doesn’t show you the time if you turn the switch off. As soon as you turn it on, the projection starts to light up from the back and show the time” Harc Lee

No word on whether you can actually buy the Time Switch, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to build one yourself. Check out more of Ryan’s projects on his site.

As before, the clocks are a collaborative effort between Tokyoflash and different Japanese designers, each trying to instill a little of the bizarre watchmaker’s time-telling into desk-bound devices. Some include iPod docks and speakers, others use ambient LED lighting, and most have some degree of animation to their displays.

I’ve a soft-spot for Clock B, which looks like Tokyoflash have mugged an Ikea lamp and stuffed some LCD guts inside. Clock E reminds me a little too much of a foam frisbee I was hit in the eye with when a child.

Design studio GOGO believe you should work for your consumer goods, rather than expect something perfectly-formed dropping off the production-line. Their latest item, called “Log Radio”, is pretty much exactly as the name might suggest: a length of wood with radio hardware installed and the buyer left to saw off their new gadget.

The work of designers Maria Makowska and Piotr Stolarski, Log Radio is just one of a new range of customer-cut products. They’ve also created ‘Log Clock’, probably a little easier on the arms as it’s basically a length of wood with clock mechanisms periodically studded through. Buyers are encouraged to customize the wood, with hands-drawn graphics.

It’s not entirely clear whether you can buy either the clock or the radio, or whether they’re art masquerading as products. I’m hoping it’s the former.

Okay, so it’s not really watching you, but this Darth Vader Sculpted Wall Clock made by Wesco Limited is a tad bit creepy and would be a very bad idea for an accessory in a child’s room.

The clock is a bit different than others that have been released before. In fact, it has red eyes that glow, adding to the menacing look of Vader. And as if that weren’t enough, the eyes are triggered to turn on once the lights in your room go out.

A creepy breathing sound effect turns on too. So not only do you have Darth Vader looming from the wall all day long. He’s also staring you down with fiery eyes and breathing at you. Sounds pretty scary to me. But if you have $35 to spend, want to add to your Star Wars memorabilia collection and don’t mind the creep factor, why not?

That’s precisely what the students entering the Corpus Christi College’s library will have to face from now on.

The Corpus Clock cost $1.8 million to make and features an escape wheel that is moved around by a grasshopper called a chronophage. It’s totally unconventional and has no hands for seconds, minutes or hours. Instead, it has a wheel with openings that reveal blue LEDs to indicate the time.

The grasshopper perched on top blinks and “eats” the minutes. It’s really pretty cool looking and was introduced by Stephen Hawking this past Friday. Funny thing is, the clock will occasionally stop, slow down, speed up and go backwards.

If you’re on the lookout for a bit of quirky art, this clock takes on a similar shape to one featured in Salvadore Dali’s The Persistence of Memory painting. This little clock if nothing else would definitely make for a nice conversation piece.

It can be draped over just about anything to make it appear as if it were melting off of whatever random object you have it hung on. There is also a version that can be just hung on the wall flat. Each one is made to order so it will take about a week to be sent out.

It is actually being sold on Etsy, and is featured in several different colors. The Melting Clock that can be draped over objects is being sold for $60 but the wall clocks are sold for $45.

Timex decided to team up with Core77 and hold a global design competition called 2154: the future of time design. Timex did so to celebrate 150 years of watch crafting.

The runner up of the competition is this concept design, the TX54. It is meant to be worn on your thumbnail, and stays clear except when activated.

Then you can just quickly glance at the time when needed. It is meant for the minimalist, but I would guess a minimalist could just glance at their cellphone as opposed to buying yet another gadget.
