Chuwi’s W3000 still looks unlikely to arrive on US or European shelves any time soon, but that hasn’t dulled the enthusiasm of the guys over at MP4 Nation. They’ve been putting the 4.1-inch touchscreen PMP through its paces, and finding that in contrast to the SmartQ 5, the W3000 actually does a good job both as a media player and as an internet device.

Chuwi have modified the standard Windows CE version of Internet Explorer, and it apparently renders sites far better than the normal build. However there’s still no Flash support, which means video sites like YouTube and Hulu are no-go areas. Instead, you’ll be looking to play FLV, RMVP, MP4 and AVI video on the PMP, and happily it’s all reportedly smooth and has a handy TV output for larger-screen entertainment.

Unfortunately, despite being Windows CE based the W3000 proved unhappy with the GAPI gaming/application API, which limits its software flexibility. Still, out of the box there’s WiFi support, a microSD card slot, USB host port and a decent media player front-end. It remains to be seen whether Chuwi develop a version of the W3000 for export – right now it only has a Chinese version of CE running – but if they do, expect it to come in at under $170 for the 8GB and under $140 for the 2GB model.

Another ARM-based touchscreen device blurring the definition between PMP and MID, the Chuwi W3000 has a Telechips 7901 dual-core chipset with integrated DSP for what’s said to be better audio and video playback. There’s also WiFi and possibly Bluetooth, GPS and USB Host functionality.

Underneath Chuwi’s GUI lurks Windows CE 5.0, never something we particularly look forward to in a MID or PMP, but at least offering web browsing and a wealth of apps – IM, media, navigation, etc – that shouldn’t push the W3000’s price up. Media file support includes MP3, WMA, OGG, AVI and RMVB, and there looks to be a 3-megapixel camera on the back too.

No word on pricing or availability, but this will likely be another import job like the SmartQ 7 MID if you want to see it outside of China. We’ll wait until we hear some hard figures and performance feedback before that.

Chuwi might not be a name you’re especially familiar with, but I’d certainly like to get to know their new M70 PMP. Blessed with a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, the M70 will play audio and video files as well as display photos and output to a TV; other specs are something of a mystery.

File compatibility is a long, long list. In audio the M70 supports MP3, WMA, WMA VBR, APE, FLAC, AAC, OGG, RM and RMVB, while video formats include AVI, DIVX, XVID, FLV, ASF and MP4. Image formats include JPEG, BMP and GIF. There’s also apparently an FM radio and microphone for using the M70 as a voice recorder.

A 4,000mAh battery and word that the display is made by LG round out pretty much all we know about the M70. In fact the only issue could be size: at 7-inches, this isn’t exactly the most pocketable of PMPs.
