As you may have heard, Microsoft has a rather large patent portfolio, and over the past few months, they've been pressuring groups working with Google-based operating systems to sign licensing deals with them to avoid patent suits. The newest of these up until today was the Microsoft/Samsung deal which included Android devices and a play to have Samsung paying Microsoft per device produced. A similar situation is now occurring with Quanta Computer Inc, this time the agreement including both Android and Google's Chrome OS.

Google Cr-48 gets Android install
Google's Cr-48 notebook is intended to bring developers up to speed with Chrome OS, but those tricksy coders just won't leave the ultraportable alone. Hexxeh has managed to get Android running on the Cr-48, after previously releasing instructions on how to install Windows 7, OS X or Ubuntu.

Google Chrome OS is “careless computing” warns GNU founder
Google Chrome OS may liberate you from fire and awkward little children who dump ice cream on your notebook, but according to GNU founder Richard Stallman it also liberates you from too many of your legal rights. The outspoken Free Software Foundation founder believes that rather than "cloud computing", Chrome OS encourages "careless computing", and highlights the fact that the rules over what information police can or can't seize without a search warrant change depending on where your data is stored.

Google smash, freeze & burn 25 Cr-48 Chrome OS notebooks in praise of the cloud [Video]
Usually, when an interesting new gadget arrives, we have to wait until iFixit gets around to tearing it down before we see what's going on inside. Google, though, don't appear willing to wait for that to happen; they've pushed out a video to demonstrate the benefits of cloud-based working, and along the way 25 Google Cr-48 notebooks are broken, frozen, shattered and generally mistreated.

Google Cr-48 Chrome OS notebooks being delivered today
Google's Cr-48 Chrome OS notebooks are already showing up with early registrants to the Chrome OS pilot program. Announced on Tuesday this week, a Cr-48 has arrived on the step of SeatGeek comms director Ben Kessler.
According to Kessler, "the build quality on the Cr-48 is mostly great, all rubberized plastic but the damn battery doesn't sit flush with the bottom." Google has purposefully left the 12.1-inch notebook generally unmarked and logo-free, targeting it solely at pilot users while commercial variants from Acer and Samsung are expected in mid-2011.

Google announces chrome notebook pilot program
Google provided an update today to the Chrome OS and in the process showed off a reference notebook called CR-48. They also announced that they have partnered with Verizon, Acer, Samsung and Intel to take the lead to bring these Chrome notebooks to market. Luckily however for the anxious early adopter Google is looking for some beta users for their Chrome OS notebook pilot program.

Google Chrome OS launching Nov 11?
The tablet wars are here and we know that there are many new tablets coming to the market soon and many builders are relying on Android to power their tablets, despite the fact that Google keeps saying Android in its current form is not suitable for a tablet. Google Chrome OS & Android “may merge closer”; CEO Schmidt opposed development
Google's CEO and the search giant's co-founders took to the stage this week to discuss Chrome OS, the future of Android and other open-source issues, revealing that the two headline-grabbing platforms - one ostensibly for smartphones, the other for netbooks - have "a great deal of commonality" and "may merge even closer." CEO Eric Schmidt also made clear that Google do not envisage Chrome OS as a direct Windows competitor; in fact, he said, "Microsoft is welcome to put Internet Explorer on our operating system."

Google Chrome OS leaked screenshots: is this Microsoft’s newest rival?
The first purported screenshots of Google's Chrome OS have leaked, courtesy of a snap-happy Acer parts supplier and a momentarily careless Google demo rep. Apparently taken at the end of a demonstration of Chrome OS for Acer, installing the software in just 10 minutes on a formerly Vista Acer Extensa 4620Z laptop, even this early build of the platform showed its speed credentials: a desktop to desktop reboot in around 25 seconds.
