Sandy Bridge based Chromebook demoed at IDF Beijing

While the Chromebook hasn’t taken off in quite the way Google expected it to, OEMs are still working on them. Samsung demoed a Chromebook at this year's IDF in Beijing that would have an “instant on” boot thanks to new Coreboot code, a Linux-based BIOS replacement that talks to the computers hardware. Why does Coreboot sound so familiar? Just last week there was news that Google added code to Coreboot for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processor support. Is that what was on display at IDF? New code points to possible Ivy Bridge Chromebooks

Currently Google’s line of Chromebooks use Intel’s Atom processor. Chrome OS might be lightweight, but the inclusion of an Atom processor led to sluggish performance in places. CNET reports that Google may be looking to use Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors, as well as the upcoming Ivy Bridge chips in future Chromebooks. Read The Full Story

Microsoft Google cash-in continues with Quanta Computer

As you may have heard, Microsoft has a rather large patent portfolio, and over the past few months, they've been pressuring groups working with Google-based operating systems to sign licensing deals with them to avoid patent suits. The newest of these up until today was the Microsoft/Samsung deal which included Android devices and a play to have Samsung paying Microsoft per device produced. A similar situation is now occurring with Quanta Computer Inc, this time the agreement including both Android and Google's Chrome OS. Read The Full Story

Google Chrome OS is “careless computing” warns GNU founder

Google Chrome OS may liberate you from fire and awkward little children who dump ice cream on your notebook, but according to GNU founder Richard Stallman it also liberates you from too many of your legal rights. The outspoken Free Software Foundation founder believes that rather than "cloud computing", Chrome OS encourages "careless computing", and highlights the fact that the rules over what information police can or can't seize without a search warrant change depending on where your data is stored. Google Cr-48 Chrome OS notebooks being delivered today

Google's Cr-48 Chrome OS notebooks are already showing up with early registrants to the Chrome OS pilot program. Announced on Tuesday this week, a Cr-48 has arrived on the step of SeatGeek comms director Ben Kessler. According to Kessler, "the build quality on the Cr-48 is mostly great, all rubberized plastic but the damn battery doesn't sit flush with the bottom." Google has purposefully left the 12.1-inch notebook generally unmarked and logo-free, targeting it solely at pilot users while commercial variants from Acer and Samsung are expected in mid-2011. Google announces chrome notebook pilot program

Google provided an update today to the Chrome OS and in the process showed off a reference notebook called CR-48. They also announced that they have partnered with Verizon, Acer, Samsung and Intel to take the lead to bring these Chrome notebooks to market.
