Chromecast app selection expands with VEVO, Plex, RealPlayer

There's a whole lot of Chromecast going on in the development department this holiday season, with Google pushing forth word of an extra 10 apps coming to the device by the end of this year. Users will be able to take advantage of music videos with VEVO, sports and oddities with Red Bull.TV, music with Songza, and worldwide news content with PostTV from the Washington Post. Then there's RealPlayer, too!

Chromecast mirroring signs spotted (but it may not be perfect)

Official Android screen mirroring for Chromecast looks to be fast approaching, with signs of code supporting the display option spotted among recent Android 4.4.1 patches. The ability to stream content locally from any Android device to a Chromecast plugged into a TV or display was unofficially hacked into the dongle early on, but Google banned the AllCast app shortly after. Now, CyanogenMod's Koushik "Koush" Dutta spots, it seems official support is close at hand, though it's not the perfect implementation many of us were hoping for.

There's a type of event that's been happening in recent months and years that hardware manufacturers call "hackathons", events where developers are encouraged to bring their biggest and best to the table. For the most part, these hackathon events are pushed to bring apps to platforms that have a distinct lack of software partners. In the case of the upcoming Chromecast hackathon, Google is encouraging the world to continue boosting the already-blossoming environment of Chromecast apps in place today.

The newest Chrome Beta browser build has a new feature that indicates which tab or tabs are playing music or other audio. That way, when you're browsing with multiple tabs open and suddenly hear some guy blabbing about a fabulous new way to make money on the Internet, you can see at a glance which tab it's coming from and shoot it down (or proceed to take him up on his unmissable offer.) This, among other handy little additions to Chrome 32.

Samsung announces screencasting SDK with multiscreen and overlay capabilities

Samsung has announced its new SDK that lets developers add screencasting functionality to apps that work in tandem with smart TVs beginning Nov. 12. The SDK also lets developers use multiscreen and overlay features for added device integration, which will help set Samsung apart from Airplay, Chromecast and other competition. The announcement was made today at the Samsung Developers Conference in San Francisco.
