Google, Vizio to give non-smart TVs Chromecast powers

Google, Vizio to give non-smart TVs Chromecast powers

Despite the growing number of app-empowered smart TVs in the latest generation of living room entertainment electronics, not everyone might be keen on giving their TV that much brain power. There are, of course, ways to bridge the gap between the plain and the smart but those, including the wallet-friendly Chromecast, require additional purchases. It seems that Google wants to change the living room arrangement again and this time it's working with TV maker Vizio to produce regular, but perhaps 4K, TVs that only have one difference: they practically have Chromecast built in.

Chrome browser can soon cast content without Cast extension

Chrome browser can soon cast content without Cast extension

Web browsing was, in the beginning, a more personal activity, with users hogging the screen, reading web pages and viewing pictures of cats. As the Web embraced more types of content, it has expanded to become a social, or at least group, experience, from watching videos to giving presentations. It seems appropriate then that web browsers be able to display their content on some external screen or display. Google made that possible in Chrome via the Google Cast extension but soon the ability will come built into the web browser, no additional software needed.

PS Vue Chromecast support ironically lands first on iOS

Streaming video content, even while available everywhere there is an Internet connection, is more often than not best enjoyed on a TV screen. Luckily Google's Chromecast has introduced a revolution in watching streaming content, which Sony is now giving homage to by making its PlayStation Vue service compatible with the HDMI dongle. But in an unexplained twist of events, that support is coming not via Google's own Android devices but through Apple's iOS platform.

Chromecast Review (2015): Utilitarian Smart TV Masterpiece

The 2015 version of the Chromecast is just nice enough to want to upgrade from the original and certainly worth the cash for new users. Chromecast is, at its core, a doorway for your smartphone to access your TV. Like its predecessor (also called Chromecast), this device acts as the courier for content from the internet to your living room, allowing your smartphone (or tablet, or laptop) to act as the controller and the explorer. This version of the Chromecast is faster than the original and a bit more versatile as it works with a cord now instead of just a dongle.

iFixit’s Google Chromecast teardown reveals simple, heat dissipating dongles

As iFixit has been known to do, they've subjected another new tech device to their detailed teardown process. This time it was Google's new Chromecast 2015 and Chromecast Audio streaming dongles. The double teardown revealed that there's little to complicate the devices, and while repairability is close to nil, that doesn't play much of a factor here, as iFixit explains. They didn't apply their usual scoring system, since "These devices are essentially a board in a box."

Amazon banning Apple TV and Chromecast sales over Prime Video

Chromecast Audio and Chromecast 2 hands-on: smart media double-down

Chromecast Audio and Chromecast 2 hands-on: smart media double-down

Today we see the tiny vinyl-record-looking device known as Chromecast Audio launch alongside the Chromecast 2nd-gen. Both devices are hockey-puck looking devices, both made of strong plastic and designed to be out-of-the way - but look good if they happen to be spotted. While the original Chromecast was a dongle attached immediately to an HDMI port, with no concern for the crowded plugs around it, this generation the Chromecast duo both have slightly more extended connections - they know they're not the only devices sticking out of your TV or your speaker system.
