Chrome browser gets WebRTC baked in for Skype challenge

Google has released a dev-version of Chrome supporting WebRTC, the integrated real-time audio and video communications system that could see VoIP, video conferencing and even streaming gaming baked into the browser. "Instead of relying on custom, OS specific, proprietary plug-ins," the Chromium blog says of developers, "they can now easily build and maintain their apps using a few simple JavaScript APIs and have the browser do the heavy lifting." HTC Chromebook in pipeline tip sources

HTC is reportedly considering producing a Chromebook using Google's Chrome OS, despite underwhelming sales of Acer and Samsung hardware using the cloud-centric platform. The new HTC - billed as an "internet-access device" - would differ in that the company is apparently looking to "combine the advantages" of Android and Chrome OS, according to DigiTimes' supply chain sources, though it's unclear if that means a dual-boot arrangement or something else. Samsung WiFi-only Chromebook arrives plus 3G price cuts

Google's Chromebook project hasn't exactly taken the mobile computing world by storm, but the search giant is hoping a software update along with a WiFi-only version of the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 will change that for the holidays. Acer's AC700 Chromebook was announced back in May and went on pre-order a while later. The little netbook was among the first of the Chromebooks to be announced and sounds more than a little interesting.
