After months of somewhat keeping silent, while letting its partners do the talking, Qualcomm is finally speaking out on the issues that have plagued what would have been its star chip for 2015, the Snapdragon 810. Naturally, it's calling the rumors of the chip overheating as hogwash and based on incomplete data. Of course, it's pointing the finger at "someone" who has been spreading this rumor to its advantage, without specifically mentioning the one company that stands to profit from the Snapdragon 810's failure: Samsung.

There is very little doubt that 2015 will see the shift to 64-bit architecture on mobile processors, especially with Qualcomm making available such chips that straddle all device tiers. Major mobile chip makers are already making the transition, but there seems to be one very small and new player who wants to catch up. Apple has begun the manufacturing work for their next flagship, likely the iPhone 6S if their historical naming scheme holds up. Cat. 4, Cat. 6, and now Cat. 10. These chipmakers are really pushing the cellular capabilities of their products to the limits, perhaps even faster than networks can actually adopt these network speeds. Of course, that has never been a reason for the likes of Qualcomm and Samsung to take it easy. Following the mobile chip leader's footsteps, Samsung is now said to also have an Exynos ready next year that will achieve speeds of 450 Mbps on downlink, almost twice as fast as Cat. 6's 300 Mbps.

AMD reveals Carrizo, it’s first high-performance SoC, coming 2015

The lure of the mobile industry is so great that even giants in the traditional PC business are scrambling to leave a mark. Just like Intel, AMD is also developing its own system-on-chip or application processing unit (APU) that will power tablets, laptops, and all-in-one computers. At its Future of Compute event, the chip maker has revealed the Carrizo, a high performance chip, and its "mainstream", in other words, less performant, counterpart, Carrizo-L. The two chips are said to be ready to ship and be integrated into devices by the first half of 2015.

This week a tip has come in from Korea that Apple may well have made up and shaken hands with Samsung for future chip production. This would be a multi-billion-dollar deal as it would remove TSMC from the equation, pushing Samsung back into the limelight for Apple device innards. Samsung has been a chipmaker for Apple before, but they had a bit of a falling out over the past several years. The chip chop talk goes back to 2012 and springs forward to the Apple iPhone 6 chip - not made by Samsung.
