Tim Cook visits China for “greater investment”

The world's most heavily populated country has has Tim Cook as its guest this past week, Apple assuring Chinese officials from Beijing that they would be investing further in the country as it opens up to the mobile world. This visit is not the first time Apple has been in the country, of course, with both parts factories and sales hitting the news headlines for quite a few months now. Apple's few retail stores in China have blossomed in the short time they've been there, with Cook's visit coming amid promises that the successful retail model Apple has in the USA will expand to China past their initial "test phase." Australian government bans Huawei from bidding amid security concerns

The Australian government was accepting bids for building a high-speed Internet network within the country. When bids opened up the Australian government decided to block the Chinese firm Huawei from the bidding process. Scalpers scramble as new iPad gains Chinese sales approval

Apple's new iPad launch in China could take place as early as April, with the country's safety regulators finally approving the WiFi model, though grey-market third-gen iPads have been available immediately after the tablet first went on sale. The China Quality Certification Center, the country's official safety standards agency, granted the new iPad WiFi its China Compulsory Certification on Thursday last week, paving the way for sales to begin as early as April. The app automatically pulls in news and articles from users' Facebook and Twitter contacts, but in a v1.8.3 update today, Flipboard introduced China-specific social network support so as to make a more convincing play for the market. Over 200,000 new iPads already smuggled into China

According to Chinese media reports, cited by Tech in Asia, more than 200,000 new iPads have already been smuggled into China. Many of these gray market iPads come from the US where online pre-orders and the abundance of retail stores selling the device has made it much easier to obtain. Workers still seek treatment after December iPad plant explosion

According to the NPR, hours after Apple inspectors left an iPad manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China where the iPad is produced an explosion struck. The explosion occurred in December of last year, and it happened in a facility other than the one the New York Times investigated. Last week, NPR reports that it met with 25 of the workers of his injured in the Shanghai explosion. The workers claim that it had been inspected by Apple hours before the blast. Read The Full Story

Pangean 300 million year old forest discovered in China

This week University of Pennsylvania paleobotanist Hermann Pfefferkorn and colleagues have presented findings they've collected from a fossilized forest hidden under a coal mine in China for 300 million years. These findings will lend insight into the ecology and climate from the time and place that the forest was alive, before it was covered in a volcano's ash over a period of several days. Because of the speed in which the ash fell and the subsequent perfect storm of environmental factors that proceeded, this site has been kept in relatively excellent condition since the age of Pangea.
