Feds remind Chevrolet Volt safety probe not complete

Feds remind Chevrolet Volt safety probe not complete

Earlier this week General Motors laid out a few details surrounding the fix they had set up to assure the world that their Chevrolet Volt was safe in the face of a Federal safety investigation on its flammable batteries. What we did not know is that the Opel Ampera was delayed over this inquiry as well, and, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds us today, the investigation is not complete, even if General Motors thinks it is. A recall has not been put in place at the moment, but one may be happening in the very near future if needed.

Chevrolet Volt battery upgrade promises less fiery crashes

Chevrolet Volt battery upgrade promises less fiery crashes

After federal safety regulators voiced several concerns over the hybrid vehicle Chevrolet Volt's battery, the folks at General Motors have taken action with both a steel structure and a cooling system to keep the battery from being in danger of catching fire after a crash. Of course those with eyes on the vehicle should know that it would've taking quite a severe crash to start the battery on fire in the first place, but Chevy isn't about to let regulators tell the public that their car isn't all the way safe. The investigation has been going on since November of 2011 and Chevrolet is "optimistic" these most recent changes should placate the feds.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic recalled due to missing brake pads

2012 Chevrolet Sonic recalled due to missing brake pads

We're pretty certain that someone at General Motors is in a whole heap of trouble this week as its been discovered that a batch of their Chevrolet Sonic cars with missing brake pads have left the factory and were sold in kind to unsuspecting customers. While these missing pads aren't currently being rated as something so fatal that GM is recommending a total instant freak-out on the part of car owners, if you are one of those owners, you probably should bring your car in to be checked. Nothing like cruising into grandma's house for New Years and finding yourself on the other side because you brakes just… you know… aren't there.

GM tries to comfort Volt owners after fires during crash testing

GM tries to comfort Volt owners after fires during crash testing

GM has worked long and hard to bring the Volt to market and the car is now facing its biggest challenge with several fires erupting after crash tests. The car was originally unveiled back in 2007 and then it took longer than GM had hoped to get the car onto the market for consumers to buy. The Volt has hit a few speed bumps along the way, but the cars have been selling and are nice options for the green fans that want an EV but don’t want to worry about how far they can drive. The Volt can go 40 miles on battery power alone and has a range of 379 miles with the gasoline generator.

Chevy announces it will produce the Spark EV in 2013

Chevrolet has announced that it intends to produce the all-electric Spark EV. The spark is a mini car and will be sold in limited quantities in select markets around the country starting in 2013. The Spark is an urban car, so I would expect it would be offered only in urban areas. Chevrolet isn’t offering a huge amount of detail on the car at this point.

Chevy shows off actual Transformers: Dark of the Moon movie cars

I have enjoyed the Transformers films well enough. My kids liked the last film the best and it was one of the better ones in the franchise. If you have watched the film you have seen Bumblebee and Sideswipe during the flick. At the Texas State Fair, Chevrolet had both the Stingray Concept that was actually the Sideswipe car from the film and the actual Camaro that was Bumblebee in the film on hand.

Chevy shows off flying car at Texas State Fair

I think one of the coolest things that Chevy had in its display at the Texas State Fair auto show was this little matte colored version of the new small car called the Sonic. The first time I saw it sitting there, I thought it was a clay reproduction of the Sonic used for the design process. Then it started whirring and lifted into the air. It turned out that it was a full-scale model of the new Sonic that was controlled and is controlled by a big RC controller like an RC airplane.
