I remember when I was younger, my favorite seat in the house was my trusty beanbag. If I could just lounge in that all day and play my Nintendo, I was set. Now I’m what some people might call a “responsible adult”and I no longer have a beanbag, as one might think it was tacky. However, if you long to have a beanbag that doesn’t look like one, you should check out these Cuddle Bags.

These things are huge. They come in sizes up to 8 feet, just imagine how many people could fit on one of those. Then again I probably wouldn’t want to share mine if I had one.

These sophisticated beanbags do come at a price. They start out at $329 for the 4-foot Player’s Pad and go all the way up to $659 for the 8-foot Great Biggie Bag.

Vincent took some time to wander through Samsung’s booth to check out all of the goodies. Once again, he took his trusty camcorder with him. Hit the jump for the video.

Most of the products on display were already shown off at their big holiday event which we covered a little while back. Still, it’s a good tour of the booth if you’re interested in seeing what Samsung was showing off.

From looking at the video, Samsung had quite a presence at the show. Shame that they’d already made all of their big announcements back in July.

The Meridian F80 is as portable of a version of audio Mecca as you will likely see this year. Just this thing’s appearance is a work of art worthy of the Ferrari name created by Enzo Anselmo Ferrari.

Let’s start with what’s built into the device, first there is the CD/DVD player. That’s right, not only does it play music, but if you hook it up to a video display it will play DVDs. Then there are the radios, AM/FM, those are kind of standard, but there is also DAB radio.

You can connect your iPod to this amazing device to search your library and play music from it. There is a plethora of other connections as well, including 2 auxiliary ins, one digital one analog, and an auxiliary out. There is also one built in antenna and two other assignable antenna sockets with different antenna accessories for them. Don’t forget the video outputs by way of S-Video and composite outs.

The actual sound output is done via an 80 watt 2.1 sound system with the sub facing out the back. This balance that the sub creates is a good weight balance for carrying the unit by the integrated handle.

This device really does look amazing, it keeps it old-school with the table-top radio design but revamps it with and art-deco elliptical appearance and an OLED display. The body is die cast and the speakers are each compartmentalized to reduce audio interference. The outsides consists of a display, a front speaker grill and the rest is painted in what is clearly Ferrari inspired colors ranging from red, white, black, and yellow on to likely whatever you want.

These radios, and I use the word loosely, are hand made in the UK. They will begin selling now for $3,000 a piece.

Have you seen those cool mirrors that are actually TVs? Well Seura was showing them off at the show today, and naturally Vincent had to stop by and shoot some video, hit the jump to check it out.

These things have been around for a little while now, but that doesn’t make them any less amazing. I’d love one of these for my bathroom because when you sit on the toilet, you actually face the mirror which is just weird. Now if I could just turn that mirror into a TV, I’d be set.

While the bathroom might seem like a logical place to put one of these, I’d probably put one in my living room and using to freak people out. Just quickly turn it on and off as they walk by. They’ll do a double-take and wonder what they just saw in the mirror. Then again I’m a prankster like that.

“Talk about an impressive ass!” That was my first thought on seeing Pioneer’s new Elite SC-09TX flagship amp, which has a rear-panel positively bristling with connectivity. Things round the front are no less exciting, however; there’s a huge LCD as the centrepiece, which is all the more necessary when you consider that not only will the Elite work as your surround sound amp (pumping 200W out of seven channels simultaneously) but access media on a connected iPod and any networked PC.

Using ICEpower analog class-D amplification together with Pioneer’s DSP processor, the Elite supports Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD, and the new THX Loudness Plus standard for high-volume audio. A connected monitoring microphone permanently tracks the sound balance in a room and tweaks it to keep it at the ideal levels.

Remember that cool Windows Media Extender I told you about just a little bit ago? Well Vincent didn’t just take a few pictures, he also got some video footage of it as well. Hit the jump to check it out.

The interface looks really simplistic, especially for anyone that’s ever used Windows Media Center. You can basically control just about anything on the different TVs or even the Media Server from a single interface if you wish.

Unfortunately like he says in the video, we’re going to have to wait to get all of the good details. We’ll let you know when they are announced.

If you’re going to hang an LCD TV on your wall, you want it to be all picture and no periphery. That’s why Toshiba have been busy beavers and gradually working on shrinking down the bezel on their HD REGZA range, down to the point that they’re the world’s thinnest. And we really are talking thin – the 46-inch model has a mere 0.9-inch surround – which means you can can fit their 40-inch model into the space a 37-inch competitor would demand.

Full 1080p high-definition, three HDMI inputs and PC input round out the basic specs; the 46-inch 46RF350U will be priced at $2,499.99 while the 40-inch 40RF350 will be $1,899.99, both available by the end of the month.

Perhaps I’m just not suffused with the CEDIA spirit, but Maxtor’s OneTouch 4 external hard-drive range just doesn’t look as “vault-like” as they’d have us believe it’s been designed to resemble. Still, that’s pretty much the only criticism I can fling at the backup/sync range so far – from the spec list, at least, they seem to have cornered the market for secure storage with more options than you can shake a stick at.

For a start, the range – that consists of the basic OneTouch 4, compact OneTouch 4 Mini and advanced OneTouch 4 Plus and will be available in sizes up to 1TB by the end of October – makes use of simple software that automates multi-machine backup and synchronisation as well as manages the advanced 256-bit AES encryption available on the latter two models.

Inside the casings there are convection cooling systems and shock mounts suspending the inner drive-caddy. Maxtor bundle an app called SafetyDrill, which (on Win XP and Vista PCs at least) creates a real-time backup of your computer’s data and, in the case of a serious crash, when booted from the included recovery CD restores everything from the most recent backup.

The basic OneTouch 4 is available in 250GB, 500GB and 750GB capacities for $99.99, $169.99 and $269.99 respectively; the OneTouch 4 Mini in 80GB, 120GB, 160GB capacities for $99.99, $119.99 and $149.99 respectively; and the OneTouch 4 Plus in 250GB, 500GB, 750GB and 1TB for $129.99, $199.99, $289.99 and $359.99 respectively. All but the 1TB OneTouch 4 Plus are available now; that model will be available by the end of October.

TVs, Home Entertainment systems and the lot aren’t the only things being shown off at CEDIA this year. Beam was there showing off their latest vacuum cleaner.

I know, they’re vacuum cleaners, big deal. However, if you live in a home that’s all carpet save the kitchen and bathrooms you’ll come to appreciate a good vacuum cleaner. Beam’s new Serenity QS is being touted as the most powerful single-motor central vacuum system. It can produce up to 640 air watts which is up to 25 percent more than competitors.

Not only is it powerful, but it’s quiet too. I hate loud vacuum cleaners, I’m not really sure why but I just can’t stand the sound of them. They use a combination of a unique mounting and bumper system, their own Quiet Pak insulation and a Sound Off muffler to keep motor noise and system vibration to a minimum.

There’s no word yet on pricing or availability, but if you want a quiet yet powerful vacuum you might look into the Serenity QS.

There has been talk around the interweb that Microsoft is bringing back the Windows Media Extender. Currently there are only three companies that they are working with to bring you such devices. One such company is Niveus Media.

Niveus unveiled their Media Extender at the show this week, and Vincent stopped by to check it out. Their Media Extender is passively cooled and is encased in a standard A/V for-factor case so it will blend in with the rest of your home theater equipment. You basically plug this bad boy into your TV and it will give you easy access to recorded TV, photos, video and online content for your enjoyment.

The Media Extender outputs in full 1080p, so everything you watch is going to look awesome. Unfortunately, not all information was available at the show. They plan to announce technical specs, pricing and availability on September 27th, so stay tuned for that.

These X8’s will be the first in-wall woofers from Sonance to perfectly align the plane of the wall and the plan of the speaker grille. All of the woofer from this line come in one of three basic geometric shapes, a circle, a square, or a rectangle.

These speakers work with any AS series finish component and don’t require trim, but will work with finish components that have trim. The finish components are of course sold separately. Also available separately is the Sonamp amplifier that would power these woofers. These woofers are made up of 8” CF cones.

These speakers will be available in December this year for varied prices. The X8 Rectangle will go for $865 the X8S square and X8R round will go for the same price, and the A800 amp will go for $550.

The Sonance S623LCR stands for Symphony, the series, 623, the model number, and then left/center/right as this one in-wall speaker can serve all three roles. Set it vertically for the best left or right sound and then horizontally for the best center channel sound.

The S623LCR uses the same drivers as the previous members of the symphony series, the S623T and the S623TR. The big difference comes in the layout as the new S623LCR’s have a dual woofer/single tweeter design.

The woofers are high output CF woofers with Ferrofluid cooled tweeters. There is also a control for the tweeter that controls the tweeter level for easy tuning. On top of that there is a snap out plug that you can connect a behind-the-grille IR sensor to. This speaker will fit between 16” studs and only requires a hole 7 1/16th by 14 and a half inches with a depth of 3 and 7/8ths inches.

These will be available in November for $475 a piece. They are high quality speakers, that are easy to install, and look great with or without the included grill, so if you are in the market for some higher end home audio equipment, check out Sonance.

The Sonance Flair loudspeaker is great because it will add high quality audio to just about any location. With Sonance’s flexible mounting brackets all you should need is a screw driver, the mounting hardware and a little bit of time.

The mounts are round steel plats that connect to speaker wiring in J-boxes. The plate mounts with just a couple screws that come with the speaker. The speaker is held in place by the steel plate by way of some powerful neodymium magnets that are in the top of the speaker. The electrical connection is automatically made between male connecters on the speaker and female connectors in the steal plate.

After they are set up they can be rotated with a range of 90 degrees so you aim them. The guts of the speaker consist of a 5.25 inch CF cone that acts as a mid/woofer. There is also a 1-inch Ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeter.

Appearance wise it’s a 10.75 inch square box that sits 2.5 inches off of the ceiling and has a removable grill that covers everything. The removable grill can also be painted so the Sonance Flair can match the rest of your room. The cost is $480 and it should be available now since it was announced at CEDIA this year.

So how many of you are familiar with Pandora the Music Genome Project? How about Rhapsody? Maybe some other internet radio station? Well imagine a single device that could stream from all of those sources plus your own computer’s library.

Such a device exists, and it’s made by Logitech. Technically it was first made by Slim Devices, but Logitech bought them and I guess they made some upgrades.

There are digital outputs that can output in 24-bit DAC for the audiophiles. There is a remote that you can use to navigate, and there is the obvious wireless connection with an Ethernet port on the back in case you place it close enough for a wired connection or don’t have a wireless one.

It will play MP3, AAC, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, Apple Lossless, WMA Lossless, and WAV files. On top of that you can play music from Pandora, Rhapsody Direct, Live365, Radioio, and Shoutcast. There is also a clock with a nifty (for college students) 7 day alarm that you can set to your class schedule.

I have never used any of the other services, but I use Pandora all the time, I for one would kill to get my grubby little hands on one of these. Thankfully no one has to die, as long as I can come up with the $299.99 one of these costs.

The CA series, much like their AC counterparts, are meant to stand up to all the elements. The only difference is that this time, the speaker company from Maine made them flush mountable.

There are 8 models in this line, ranging from 5.25” all the way up to 8 inches. There are dedicated woofers, speakers with dual voice coils to cover the highs, and Mid/Bass speakers.

Some of them come with grills to hide away the speakers, others you can either let them show, which isn’t an entirely bad idea considering they are little works of art, or you can find some way to cover them on your own. As I said, they speakers are literally almost exactly like their enclosed counterparts, but it’s up to you to mount them where you like.

The AC series of speakers are enclosed weather-proof speakers that are meant to be surface mounted to wherever you can stick them. The AC for all those who don’t know, stands for All Climate. The speakers are manufactured in one of the harshest climates in the US, Maine. So they can pretty much guarantee that they will work in any weather.

The speakers implement a Wide-Fi technology that allows one loudspeaker to output both channels of audio. Implementing multiple Wide-Fi speakers only increases the audio quality.

So, how do they work so well in just about any weather? First there is the ACAD or Anodized-Ceramic Aluminum Diaphram cone that stays light, but rigid all the while standing up to the elements. Next there is the UniCavity molded one-piece speaker box that doesn’t even have screw holes for the mounting brackets but screw posts that are also molded. Then there is the MFCS or Magnetic Fluid Centering System that replaces the traditional “spider” that would re-center the cone above the magnet. Lastly they use watertight connectors for wiring.

There are basically 3 models, all of which are available in 3 standard colors, white, black, or green and then there is a custom color option. The AC.15/15.P/15.X/15XT and the AC.16/16.P/16.X/16.XT models are all pretty much the same with the main variations being types of connectors, input selectors, and wattage with the .15 series hitting at 125 watts per unit and the .16 series hitting at 150. The big difference comes in the AC.WF16/16.P/16.X which is the Wide-Fi unit that projects both left and right channels.

Now the AC series already has some pretty good bass with those ACAD cones, but just in case you like it a little shakier, there is a separate sub available. The sub is intended to be either surface mounted or even buried partially. So there is always that option. By the way, the huge green one is the sub.

No word on price, but they are all-weather, outdoor speakers that are handmade and come with a lifetime warranty. So even if they are expensive, chances are they are worth it.

If Sony thought they were going to have things all their own way with the launch of their stonking Bravia projectors then they obviously hadn’t paid attention to fellow CEDIA 2007 attendee JVC. The company’s new flagship Procision range is intended for custom installs and prosumer home cinema fanatics, and at its pinnacle are two D-ILA front projectors, the DLA-HD1 and DLA-HD100.

Available already, the DLA-HD1 has a native contrast ration of 15,000:1, and is capable of throwing a picture in full 1080p high-definition; it’ll be joined this Fall by the DLA-HD100 that takes these capabilities and pushes contrast to a stunning native 30,000:1.

Both projectors have two 1080p HDMI/HDCP inputs, HD component inputs, S-Video, composite and serial interface for home networking.

CEDIA isn’t all about TV screens the size of a small country; it’s an opportunity for accessory manufacturers to show off their wares and persuade you to upgrade your cabling, stands and cabinets. Vogels were there in force this year, flaunting their latest speaker and projector stands together with a nifty universal-mount.

The EPW-6565 has a universal mount suitable for projectors up to 10kg in weight and attaches to the bracket with a single click. A spherical ball-joint maximises adjustability while there’s also a cable-guide system.

It’s available now.

First, it has a half terabyte of HDD storage, then there is a 200 disc Blu-Ray/DVD/CD changer. It has full HD (1080p) output from the disc changer or hard drive.

The hard drive can store up to 137 hours of video, 40,000 songs, or 20,000 photos. This thing is also Sony’s first device not connected to a computer that’s Blu-Ray capable other than optical drives and a few VAIO notebooks.

It also burns Blu-Ray and DVD discs from the content stored on it. The home entertainment server also connects to a network to collect meta-data for the media in its disc changer and for firmware updates.

The server also has tons of integrated software too, first there is the x-Application software, which is x-Pict Story HD and x-ScrapBook for photo slideshows and other presentations. Then there is the XMBTM or XrossMediaBar which makes navigating through all your content a breeze. With a separate wireless adapter you can also stream your media throughout your house through up to 10 registered devices with 4 streams at once thanks to the Digital Living Network Alliance or DLNA support. The DLNA support works with the PS3 and a few VAIO notebooks and if I remember right there was a standalone unit that you could get for other computers to support DLNA.

Another thing is that it looks amazing, it is a reflective black tower with dimensions of 12.25×31 5/8×15 7/8 inches. All the controls on the actual cabinet are backlit and touch sensitive and the display is viewable from either the top or the front.

There are tons of connectivity options too, other than the Ethernet and optional wireless, there is S-Video, composite, audio and HDV/DV(i-Link) inputs and HDMI with BRAVIA Theatre Sync, component, optical, coaxial, and analog out’s. There is even a card reader that supports MS, SD, CF, and xD memory cards.

Now comes the only downside of this amazing machine, the price, it’s a fair one for all it does, but its $3,500. It will be available from Sony’s online store, authorized retailers, Sony’s retail stores, and military bases.

Vincent stopped by the Sony booth where they were showing off plenty of new stuff. First up are a couple of home theater projectors for those that don’t like to be limited by the size of a TV screen.

Both the BRAVIA VPL-VW200 and VPL-VW60 projectors display full high-definition 1080p pictures using progressive Silicon X-tal Reflective Display technology. They utilize wire grid polarizers and high contrast plates to double the previous native contrast ratio to 35,000:1. If you like customizing your equipment you’ll be happy to know that they accept an external anamorphic lens for displaying movies in the naitive aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Noise is kept to a minimum on the units with fan noise peaking at only 22dB.

While these two projectors do share some similarities between them, they are definitely two different beasts. The VPL-VW200 is aimed at the high-end market with its high frame rate SXRD panels capable of displaying pictures at 120fps and three motion compensation modes that allow the user to adapt performance based on the content being displayed. You also get a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tesar lens that support x.v.Color technology via HDMI and a high output pure Xenon lamp with the most accurate red, green and blue color temperatures. If you want to display content from a PC, you only need to run an ethernet cable to the unit.

The VPL-VW60 will be available this month for $5,000 while the high-end VPL-VW200 will be released in October for $15,000.

In a show of remarkable solidarity, Denon has released some Blu-Ray disc players at CEDIA 2007 today – astounding everyone who had forgotten that the format existed and were too busy distracting themselves by salivating on Apple Store windows. The so-called “reference standard” DVD-3800BDCI (and what a snappy name that is) takes the award for being the “world’s first BD-ROM Profile 1 version 1.1 Blu-ray Disc Player from a Blu-Ray Disc Association member featuring the acclaimed 10-bit Silicon Optix Realta chipset.”

While that might seem a bit of a niche claim to fame, the performance from the 3800 should make you forget the hyperbole. Denon are calling it the highest resolution high-definition video currently available through an HDMI connection, and they’ve paired it with high-def audio decoding and DDSC-HD audio output.

There’s a junior version, the DVD-2500BTC, which lacks the onboard video/audio decoder and requires an external receiver, but that otherwise offers the BD-ROM Profile 1 version 1.1 support.

Both models should be available this Fall, priced at $1,999 for the DVD-3800BDCI and $1,199 for the DVD-2500BTC.

If you like the look of Denon’s network media streamers but don’t have an existing HiFi setup to connect one to, then take a look at what else the company has announced at CEDIA 2007 today. Added to the S-Series – Denon’s range of compact, all-in-one systems – the S-52 and S-32 have wireless connectivity to your home network to stream audio either from a computer, NAS or internet radio.

Both also have a built-in iPod dock for playback from the PMP as well as recharging it, and there’s a scroll-wheel on the devices themselves to make navigation of radio stations or tracklists quick and easy. MP3, WAV, WMV, AAC and FLAC formats are supported, as well as tracks from the subscription-based Rhapsody service.

The S-52 adds a slot-load CD player, HD radio tuner with multicasting ability, a USB host port for connecting thumb drives or external hard-drives so as to play their content, and is satellite radio ready via subscription-based hardware.

The S-52 and S-32 will ship in October 2007 for $699 and $499 respectively.

A phrase I hate is “wife acceptance factor” (WAF) – the degree to which a gadget is permitted home space by virtue of its ease of use, attractiveness or general benefits – when really what we’re talking about is non-technophile acceptance factor. Surround-sound setups are a good example of this; yes, the average SlashGear reader will put up with the wires and sprouting speakers because the audio is worth it, but others are less forgiving. So Denon’s DHT-FS3 Active Surround Sound System is likely to win admirers among the gadget-savvy and otherwise, being a discrete black bar that sits under your TV and gives the impression of a full cavalcade of speakers.

With a five channel amplifier built-in, giving 25W per channel plus 50W for the super-slim subwoofer, it uses X-Space Surround to emulate the traditional speaker setup. Three digital and one analog inputs should be enough for the target audience, and there’s an optional iPod dock for the ubiquitous Apple PMP. The whole thing can be wall-mounted, and there’s a nifty hidden LCD display that, when powered off, is covered by the speaker grill.

The DHT-FS3 is available now for $1,199

You’re nobody in the media world until you can stream songs from one corner of the house to another, and HiFi mainstay Denon have obviously had enough of the playground taunts. At CEDIA 2007 today they’re launching two networked A/V products, one wired and one wireless, that not only will allow you to play music stored elsewhere on your home network but also from your iPod via an on-board dock.

Connecting to an existing HiFi, TV input or standalone speaker of any brand, the ASD-3N (wired) and ASD-3W (wireless) lack onboard speakers of any sort; however, the full colour screen will display album artwork and photographs as well as song metadata.

In terms of track format compatibility, the units will happily play MP3, non-protected AAC and PlaysForSure-encoded music; they’ll also recharge any iPod placed in the dock while at the same time playing tracks stored on it. S-Video and analog audio outputs should see it compatible with most entertainment systems, but if you have a Denon receiver made after 2007 you can hook it up to the “dock control port” and control the streamer via the receiver’s remote.

Both should be available this month, with the ASD-3N priced at $179.99 and the ASD-3W at $229.99

While I’ve never been locked in a cupboard containing a load of HiFi gear, I can only imagine it’s similar to being locked in the tumble dryer cupboard when you’re little because your mom caught you stealing kibble from the cat’s dish. By that I mean perilously hot, rather than shaming and likely to leave you with severe social dysfunction. So any audio maestro worth their wage knows that it’s better to keep your components cool if you don’t want to either plumb in air-con or suffer hardware failure; step in Rotel’s latest range of nigh-on zero-heat poweramps, the RMB-1076 and RMB-1085, and RSP-1069 surround-sound processor, launched at CEDIA 2007.

Designed with easy rackmounting in mind, the pair of poweramps are under three-inches tall and weigh less than 12 pounds apiece, using Rotel’s own “Class D” amplifier technology that combines controlled oscillator modulation and enhanced cascade control without sacrificing efficiency. The main difference between the pair is channel-count; the 1076 has six 100W channels while the 1085 has five 100W (both 20Hz – 20kHz, all channels driven, 8ohms, <0.2% THD). Both also have 12V trigger power on/off, while the 1076 also has signal sensing on/off.

Meanwhile, the RSP-1069 uses Texas Instruments’ admired Aureus audio-DSP engine, supporting Dolby Digital/EX, Pro Logic II/x, and DTS/ES-Discrete and Neo:6 surround sound modes. Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz digital to analogue converters, together with the Faroudja DCDi video upscaling processor handle four HDMI inputs (supporting full 1080p Hi-Def) and three 1080i/720p-capable component paths.

Click for full-size rear panel image

The 1069 is rounded out with home automation triggers (so your curtains can swish as the movie starts) and multi-room audio and video distribution for up to three extra zones.

All three are available Q3 2007, priced at $1,199 for the RMB-1085, $1,599 for the RMB-1076, and $2,199 for the RSP-1069.

If distributed media is your thing – and let’s face it, if you’re saying it’s not your thing, you’re a dirty liar – and you’ve stumped up the pretty ponies for Apple’s iPhone, then you’ll likely be curious about iPort’s new in-wall docks. Compatible with both the iPhone and iPod ranges, the system uses a standard Apple Universal Port and lets you control your PMP – and access audio and video stored on it – from anywhere in your networked home.

iPort’s system is apparently compatible with “most” popular home automation systems, including Crestron and AMX, which means you can feasibly scamper through your iPhone via a tasty touchscreen in, say, the bathroom. They’ll be launching it officially at CEDIA, which our intrepid reporter Vincent Nguyen is currently on his way to.

The iPort range starts at $200 for the basic model, but if you want two-way control you’re looking at $800 upward.
