Ah, Minority Report; whether or not you love the film itself, it’s been incredibly useful as shorthand to instantly encapsulate an eye-catching multitouch environment. Microsoft’s display at CeBIT 2011 earlier this month certainly delivered on that: interactive presentation specialist Stereolize put together a whopping 234-inch touch-sensitive display for the company to use.

Video demo after the cut

According to Stereolize, the “Microsoft Cinema” display is the largest touchscreen in the world. It’s not entirely clear what resolution it’s running at – this is certainly more than the WVGA you’d get on a Windows Phone – nor how many points of multitouch it supports, but for grabbing attention at a busy trade show (and then encouraging people to sit and watch) it’s perfect.

There’s also WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth and up to 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Gigabyte is particularly proud of the display, which is of course higher-resolution than you’d find on an iPad, and there are twin cameras too, 5-megapixels on the back and 1.3-megapixels up-front for video calls.

According to Gigabyte, the GN-TB100 is expected to ship in July 2011, with a few more aesthetic tweaks in-between now and then. Hopefully that will also extend to updating the OS; the prototypes are running Android 2.2 Froyo, rather than the Honeycomb we’d expect to see.

Back in May of 2010 Aviiq unveiled a sweet new laptop stand that was really thin and has a very attractive design. The stand was called the Aviiq Portable Laptop stand. Aviiq has unveiled a new line of portable accessories for the iPad and for notebook computers at CeBIT 2011. The line includes a new version of that laptop stand from last year with new colors.

The Portable Laptop Stand was originally only offered in silver. You can now get it in satin silver, satin titanium, satin black, and satin white colors. It has the same folding design and quarter inch thickness making it very portable. New gear includes the Aviiq Portable Quick Stand that looks a lot like that laptop stand. The Quick Stand weighs 3.5 ounces and is 3/8 of an inch thick when folded. It will support notebooks up to 17-inches.

The Aviiq Portable Case Stand for iPad is a four-position case for the iPad that has two stands that will hold the iPad in landscape or portrait mode for watching video and at a much lower angle for typing on the screen. Aviiq also has a new Portable USB Charging station that allows three USB devices to charge from a single wall outlet. The devices can also be synced to a computer with a single data connection. Pricing is as follows; Portable Quick Stand ($39.99), Portable Case Stand for iPad ($59.99), USB Charging Station ($99.99), Original Portable Laptop Stand ($59.99) and the new shades of the Portable Laptop Stand ($79.99). All of the new gear will ship this month.

Meanwhile, the Eee Pad Transformer and Eee Pad Slider – which we played with back in January – will arrive in the UK come mid-April. They’ll run Android 3.0 Honeycomb at launch, as will the MeMO, unlike the demo units we’ve seen so far that have been based on Froyo.

Finally, ASUS’ sole Windows 7 tablet, the Eee Slate EP121, will go on sale from early April; in the UK it will be sold through “selected” PC World and Currys stores. No pricing at this stage, though ASUS Germany has said that the Eee Pad MeMO is expected to kick off at €499.

Press Release:

ASUS Tablet Computers — Providing Choice through Innovation at CeBIT 2011

A wide range of innovative tablet computers provide
variety of choice for consumers and businesses alike.

CeBIT, Hanover, Germany — ASUS today presented a live
demonstration of the four tablet devices announced earlier this
year: the Eee Slate EP121, Eee Pad Transformer, Eee Pad Slider
and Eee Pad MeMO. Designed for a wide range of users and
applications, the models will be available with three screen sizes,
and a choice of either Windows® 7 Home Premium or Google
Android® operating systems for the ultimate in mobile flexibility
and productivity.

Consumer choice is essential when selecting innovative and
technologically advanced personal computer devices. When it comes
to tablets, there is a clear need for devices that can deliver a full
multimedia experience using HD video, broad connectivity options,
gaming, plus the broadest range of media compatibility with
standards like Adobe Flash, all in a neat compact package. In
short, there is a demand for tablets that enable users to both
consume and create content in order to learn, work or play.

ASUS Eee Slate EP121
The Eee Slate EP121 is designed for users who require a highly
portable handheld device that can also run standard office software
while multitasking with other applications. Powered with an Intel®
Core™ i5 dual-core processor, the Eee Slate features a 12.1” LEDbacklit display with a 1280 x 800 resolution and a wide 178° viewing angle, making it perfectly suited for both productivity applications and multimedia entertainment.

Windows® 7 Home Premium ensures full compatibility with a wide
range of popular applications controlled by flexible input options
thanks to the Eee Slate. The capacitive touch-screen responds
instantly to fingertip control for day-to-day use, while the
electromagnetic stylus offers fine precision input and control. An onscreen keyboard is also complimented by support for an external
Bluetooth keyboard for traditional desktop use.

The Eee Slate is available with 32GB or 64GB of SSD storage
(expandable via SDXC), and up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM. All models
have 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 2-megapixel camera, plus two
USB 2.0 ports that provide full support for a wide range of standard
PC peripherals, along with a mini-HDMI port that is ideal for
connecting to external displays.

The Eee Slate EP121 was recently honored with a CES 2011
Innovation Award in the Personal Electronics category, and initial
sales figures showed it reaching the 3rd best-selling item in the
Computers and Accessories category at Amazon.com.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer
Slated for release in April, the Eee Pad Transformer comes with a
slim lightweight design and 10.1” capacitive touch-screen. It is the
perfect pad computer for people who want to enjoy multimedia on
the move, but still wish to have easy access to the web, email and
other productivity applications. A custom user interface provides
easy access to the many features of the Android® 3.0 HoneyComb
operating system, while the NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2 chipset provides
full support for Adobe Flash, smooth HD video conferencing and
playback, a lightning fast web experience and incredible mobile
gaming performance.

An optional docking station turns the Transformer into a full-fledged
notebook with a QWERTY keyboard for desktop use, while extending
battery life up to 16 hours. As with the Slider, front (1.2MP) and
rear (5MP) digital cameras make for easy video chat and digital
photography, while a built-in mini-HDMI port makes for easy
connections to external displays for full 1080p HD video playback.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider
Mobile users who want the best of both tablet and traditional
notebook worlds will be well served by the Eee Pad Slider. This pad
computer not only features a 10.1” IPS touch-screen for fingerfriendly use, but also a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for comfortable,
use-anywhere typing. It is powered by the NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2, the
world’s most advanced mobile processor with a dual-core CPU and
NVIDIA® GeForce® GPU for never-before-seen experiences on a
mobile device.

Built-in digital cameras on the front (1.2MP) and rear (5MP) of the
Slider allow for easy video chat and digital photography while the
Android® 3.0 HoneyComb operating system makes sharing photos
by internet, email and social media sites a breeze. The intuitive
interface provides user-friendly control via the capacitive touchscreen and optional onboard 3G allows for go-anywhere internet
access, making the Slider the ideal device for mobile professionals
with work-oriented needs.

ASUS Eee Pad MeMO
The Eee Pad MeMO provides the ultimate in mobile flexibility. Its 7”
capacitive touch-screen makes it small enough to slip into a jacket
pocket, yet still perfect for taking handwritten notes using the
supplied stylus pen. The Android® 3.0 HoneyComb operating
system with Qualcomm®’s dual-core Snapdragon™ offers a wide
range of productivity and entertainment software, while a Micro
HDMI port means the MeMO can even connect to an external
display for full 1080p HD video playback. Built-in digital cameras on
the front (1.2MP) and rear (5MP) of the MeMO also allow for easy
video chat and digital photography, making it a convenient travel
companion.

The tablet is claimed to be the first Android tablet with NFC on the market. The TazPad has a 7-inch screen that supports multitouch and has Full HD support and HDMI output. The TazPad also features WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and ZigBee.

Other features include a camera, GPS, and an accelerometer. The tablet is set to ship in Q2 and we don’t have any other specs or pricing details at this time. I wonder what CPU and version of Android the tablet runs.

CeBIT 2011 kicks off this week in Hanover, and already we’re seeing information trickling out. ASUS has quietly confirmed that the Eee Pad MeMO launched at CES 2011 back in January will indeed debut running Android 3.0 Honeycomb; jkkmobile spotted the news on the MeMO’s full spec list, confirming a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260 processor, microHDMI port and quadband HSPA+ connectivity.

That’s on top of WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and microUSB (with Host support for plugging in peripherals), a 3.5mm headphone socket and microSDHC slot. There’s also GPS, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash on the back, and a 1.2-megapixel camera on the front, while sensors include a gyroscope, g-sensor, light, proximity and digital compass.

Storage is up to 64GB and RAM is 1GB, and the 7-inch display runs at 1024 x 600 and responds to capacitive finger control together with ASUS’ included stylus. A full charge is apparently good for up to 8hrs of video playback, and the MeMO can supposedly handle 1080p HD. No word on pricing at this stage, but if ASUS can get that right then this might make for some impressive competition to the HTC Flyer.

[via Android Community]

Update: jkkmobile has delivered some video of the MeMO, and while the demo unit is only running Android 2.2 Froyo, the interesting part is the Bluetooth handset accessory ASUS is showing alongside the tablet. It can be used for voice calls, so that you needn’t hold the 7-inch slate to your head. It also has a transparent display, and can be used as a remote control for the MeMO. According to ASUS Germany, the MeMO should be priced at €499 ($690) for the 8-16GB model, or €699 for the 32-64GB model, with the Bluetooth handset; that definitely undercuts the €669 HTC Flyer at the entry level, at least.

Set to go on show at CeBIT 2011 this week, and expected to spawn commercial displays “within the next year,” the Wireless 22-inch Fujitsu screens use SUPA (Smart Universal Power Access) hotspots built into desks, countertops and office panels.

SUPA has been co-developed with The Fraunhofer Institute, and basically works in a similar – but higher-power – way to your electric toothbrush or Palm Touchstone. Outwardly invisible, the magneto-induction transmitter antennas allow for “park and play” computing, with a single display toted around to different rooms or cubicles.

As for the data, in the proof-of-concept that’s served with a wireless USB system with a roughly 10m range; hopefully that could be boosted to support whole-house (or office) range in the commercial versions. No word on pricing or specific availability at this stage, nor official photos of the system.

Press Release:

Fujitsu Shows World’s First Truly Wireless Display at CeBIT

Award-winning breakthrough power innovation consigns cables to the display technology history books

Munich/Hanover, February 28, 2011
Fujitsu today announces that it is showing a working design study of the world’s first truly wireless PC display at CeBIT 2011, which takes place in Hanover, Germany, from March 1-5. The leading European IT infrastructure provider expects that commercial wireless display models featuring the breakthrough innovation SUPA (Smart Universal Power Access) technology will go into production within the next year.

Incorporating wireless power technology developed by The Fraunhofer Institute and partners within a German research project funded by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Fujitsu proof-of-concept display is completely portable, cable-free, and the world’s first display using wireless to provide both the power and the signal for the screen. The technology paves the way for “park and play” computing, where displays are powered simply by being placed on a desktop or conference table hot-spot.

Wireless 22-inch Fujitsu displays are powered by SUPA technology (Smart Universal Power Antenna), drawing power via magneto-induction from transmitter antenna that can be built-in to desks or office panels. The smart-power antenna is concentrated on a hot-spot and the technology is completely safe, just like induction-based kitchen hobs and electric toothbrush chargers. The display receives picture images via wireless USB from a desktop or notebook, with a range of up to 10 meters.

At CeBIT, a futuristic office desk featuring the wireless display, designed by the furniture company Euskirchen, will receive a Universal Design Award 2011 . The Consumer Favorite category award will be handed over at 12:00 on Wednesday, March 2, at CeBIT in hall 19.

Says Rajat Kakar , Senior Vice Pr esident Workplace Systems at Fujitsu Technology Solutions: “We are planning to introduce the first models incorporating totally wireless power technology to our LED-backlit display range within the next year. This is another technology innovation from Fujitsu, following on from our 0-Watt PCs and displays. In operation, there’s no difference in quality from the desktop image – except that we’ve consigned cables to the history books of display technology.”

Pricing and regional availability for the truly wireless Fujitsu displays is still to be determined and will be revealed at the commercial product launch.

CeBIT visitors will find the wireless displays on the Fujitsu booth in the Dealers Only section (hall 15, booth F15).

MiTAC has unveiled four tablets that will run Android and break cover next month. The tablets include the 7-inch Valar 7 and 10-inch Valar 10. These tablets are both said to run Android 2.3, support 1080p video, and have HDMI output along with GPS. The Ulmo is a 7-inch screen tablet that is rugged and has a waterproof body.

The other tablet is called the Zeus and is said to be the first dual GPS receiver tablet. The dual receivers aim to give the tablet enhanced features for navigation. The Zeus tablet has a 6-inch screen and is 11.6mm thick.

MSI is readying a tablet PC running AMD’s dual-core C-50 APU, according to sources in Taipei, with the Windows 7 based slate expected to make its debut at CeBIT 2011 early next month. According to DigiTimes‘ sources, the MSI WindPad 110W will pair the Brazos processor and integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics with a 32GB SSD. Meanwhile, there’s also talk of an MSI Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet, also expected to show up for the first time.

Inside the WindPad 110W there’ll be a g-sensor, light sensor and WiFi connectivity, while the OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. Interestingly, the last time we heard of MSI’s Windows 7 tablet plans, it was the underwhelming U110W running Intel’s Atom Z530 processor, so it seems the company has had a change of architecture heart in the meantime. Still, an Intel-based WindPad 100W is also expected to be shown.

As for the Android slate, that’s the MSI WindPad 100A. First tipped as in the works back in late December, the 110W will run NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor – as in the XOOM and Galaxy Tab 10.1 – but otherwise details are in short supply.

We mentioned before here and here that tablets are increasingly being adopted at the enterprise level. Originally a luxury item for media consumption and game play on the go, tablets are rapidly heading to the work place. Fujitsu has this in mind and will be targeting enterprise users when they officially unveil their new Windows 7 tablet—the Stylistic Q550—at CeBIT.

Fujitsu’s Stylistic Q550 comes with a whole slew of enterprise level security features including a fingerprint reader, smartcard slot, and trusted-platform module (TPM). The tablet will run Windows 7 Professional using the Intel Oak Trail Atom processor and has a 10-inch LED touchscreen display that works with either stylus or finger.

The device comes with front and rear cameras, a choice of 32GB or 64GB SSD, an optional 3G module, and a USB port. Battery life is estimated at eight hours. The tablet should be available in Europe by April. There are no details yet on pricing or availability for the US.

Hanvon brought its HPad A116 along to CES 2011 last month, and now there’s apparently a second version for the European market. The Hanvon HPad A112 has a 7-inch 800 x 600 touchscreen, Android 2.2 Froyo and a 3-megapixel camera on the back, along with optional 3G and GPS. The 10.8mm slate has a magnesium alloy frame and brushed stainless steel shell, and Hanvon has whipped up its own handwriting support in the office app.

The A112 is powered by a 720MHz ARM11 processor paired with 2GB of internal storage and a microSD slot; there’s also WiFi and Bluetooth, USB and HDMI. The 3,300 mAh battery is supposedly good for up to 8hrs of reading, though it’s not clear how long it will power the HPad for video playback or browsing. At first glance, lower camera resolutions aside, it’s hard to see where the A112 differentiates itself from the A116, beyond the price: the tablet Hanvon showed off at CES was expected to launch for around $350, while Hanvon is supposedly expecting the A112 to retail for around €399 ($545) when it drops in the second half of the year.
