‘cases’ Stories

Typically, as soon as I buy a new gadget I stat looking for things to keep it safe and scratch free. I have used scratch-resistant films on my iPhone since I got it. A new scratch resistant film called Wrapsol Ultra has been announced that claims to not only protect your iPhone from scratches, but from falls as well.

Bizarre PC cases are nothing new, but Lian Li’s PC-T1R Spider does manage to look different even in that unusual crowd.  Described as a “test bench” case – that is, one which leaves the components open and accessible for frequent tinkerers – the PC-T1R takes a mini-ITX board and a slimline optical drive, while looking like a spider with half its regular legs.

I think many of the products Quirky produces are cool and I like the fact the company lets visitors to its website help design the product. The latest product for sale at Quirky is a cool case for the iPad called the Cloak Undercover.

While we spent twenty minutes grabbing hands-on video with the Apple iPad yesterday, something we didn’t get to play with were the official iPad accessories.  Over at iLounge they’ve had better luck, giving some first impressions and pricing details for the Apple iPad Keyboard Dock, Apple iPad Case, Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter and Apple iPad Camera Connector Kit.

It didn’t take long for accessory manufacturers to jump on the Apple iPad bandwagon, and Griffin is one of the first we’ve seen.  While the tablet itself won’t ship for another couple of months, they’re already promoting a range of cases and screen protectors.

One of the devices we’d hope might see a CES 2010 debut but which failed to materialize was the Archos Phone Tablet.  The 3.5G cellularly-equipped version of the Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet, it was first tipped back in September 2009 and promised for 2010, but so far the French company have been no more specific about when we can expect the Android smartphone/tablet hybrid.  Now, a listing for the Archos Phone Tablet has been spotted on the “coming soon” list for case manufacturer Noreve, prompting speculation that its launch could be relatively close.

In all the time we had our Nokia E72 review unit in, we never really felt the need to drop it, cover it in dust or generally knock it about.  Still, there are more demanding people out there than us, and some of them have a soft spot for an excellent QWERTY keyboard on their smartphone, and so OtterBox have stepped in with two new cases for the E72: a Defender and a Commuter.

chumbophone 1 245x313 customSince you can now pick up a set of chumby guts without bothering with the standard casing, the real fun for the platform is in fashioning a unique housing for the internet-connected widget display.  That can be as basic as the cardboard box the components come with, or you can go the route of one particular Etsy seller and put together a somewhat Steampunk-esque retro enclosure.

Called the Chumbophone, as far as we can tell the various brass horns, controls and other appendages are all decorative rather than functional.  The only real controls are the power button, the front panel key and the chumby’s 3.5-inch 320 x 240 touchscreen, which is still enough to browse various web widgets, control music – either streaming or local – and do everything else that makes chumby so appealing.

Thermaltake’s Level 10 PC case is half monolith to computing excess and half work of art, and we’ve been hoping the company would greenlight a production run since we first spotted it.  Happily that’s now happening, and if you’d like to see what $700 of chassis looks like then MaximumPC have the unboxing for you.

It’s always those darned case manufacturers giving things away.  Latest to scoop Apple to their own announcement is Cygnett, who have thrown up product pages for both iPod touch G3 and iPod nano G5 models; the same models we’re expecting Apple to unveil later today.  The iPod touch G3 case has a cut-out for the rumored camera, while the iPod nano G5 images show a much-elongated display.
