Softbank buys 70% of Sprint in $20.1bn deal

Japanese carrier Softbank has confirmed it is acquiring a majority share in Sprint, in a deal worth $20.1bn expected to be closed by mid-2013. The deal, rumored last week, will see Softbank pay $12.1bn to Sprint's existing shareholders to snap up the struggling US CDMA carrier, with the remaining $8bn used to "strengthen Sprint's balance sheet." The acquisition will see Softbank attempt to bring some Japanese-style LTE magic to Sprint's network in the US, with current CEO Dan Hesse remaining on in his position. Read The Full Story

Japanese carrier SoftBank is "in advanced talks" to acquire Sprint, insiders claim, with a deal worth potentially $12.81bn apparently on the table. Full details of the negotiations have not been leaked, though the deal would undoubtedly represent a significant risk for SoftBank, the WSJ reports. Huawei faces ban in Canada over security risks

Earlier this week, both Huawei and ZTE were accused of espionage practices on behalf of the Chinese government, and the US House Intelligence Committee recommended that companies in the US should refrain from using either Huawei or ZTE hardware. MetroPCS could be the target of a bidding war, with wireless industry whispers that Deutsche Telekom's bid to merge the carrier with T-Mobile USA may face a challenge from another US network. Although the agreement with Deutsche Telekom has already been announced as in incipient merger, a trio of sources speaking to Bloomberg claim ailing rival Sprint is weighing a counter-bid that could be submitted as early as next week. EE 4G opens for business October 30

EE: Our LTE-complaining rivals made the wrong decisions

Under fire from rivals unhappy at it taking the lead, UK 4G network EE has shot back with suggestions that Vodafone and O2 could have been LTE competitive had they planned ahead properly. Speaking at a pre-launch benchmarking session, EE director of network services and device development Tom Bennett dismissed complaints by the carrier's competitors as being selective with the facts, arguing instead that lack of investment is to blame for their being behind. New 4G carrier EE has thrown three of its LTE smartphones up for purchase today, and confirmed the Galaxy Note II LTE is also incoming, though you can't actually use the high-speed data connection yet. The HTC One XL, Samsung Galaxy S III, and Huawei Ascend P1 LTE are all available from today through Orange and T-Mobile UK, though for the moment users will only see 3G data speeds. European wireless provider Deutsche Telekom (who owns T-Mobile) is rumored to be closing in on an acquisition deal with regional carrier MetroPCS. If and when the buyout happens, the German wireless carrier is planning on using MetroPCS's resources to bolster up T-Mobile's US network.
