With rumors of Canon 5D replacement imminent release circulating for nearly a year, the long awaited and overdue 5D successor has finally made its appearance- and it has given Canon a lot more ammunition in its DSLR war against Nikon. Armed with newest Canon’s in-house development Digic IV image processor, the EOS 5D Mark II sports a 21 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor and features full 1080p HD movie mode, 3.9 frames per second, 9 AF points + 6 AF assist area Auto Focus system, high resolution 3.0″ 920k dot LCD monitor with live view, new battery and battery grip, integrated cleaning system and can shoot up to ISO sensitive of 256,000. The Canon EOS 5D mark II is slated to ship by the end of November 2008 at $2699.

Canon 5d campaignA reputable French magazine, Chasseur d’images, that brought you an ad leak on Leica 50mm F0.95 Noctilux has an interesting post on their website involving the year most anticipated digital camera – Canon EOS 5D mark II.

Chasseur d’images is one of French’s most-read photography magazines, they probably have got to look at and even field-test the camera. They did mention and state the information as rumors that have been circulating the web recently (so they don’t break NDA?). It’s in French, so the babefish translation is slightly challenging. Canon 5d campaignIt is an exciting time of the year for photographers; Photokina is just around the corner. Many are waiting on Canon to unleash the long overdue 5D replacement. Rumors and speculations have been flooding the internet forum and guess what Canon did? They launched a teaser campaign, more mysterious and a small peek to the 5D successor Worldwide. At US site and China site, it’s a silhouette of a camera with the words Destined Evolution. At UK and many Europe sites , it’s a quick and dirty flash presentation of the following words in sequence.

A firmware update on the entry-level Rebel Digital SLR has been issued from Canon Japan today. The newest Firmware version 1.09 addressed the following issues.

Fixes a phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting.

Fixes a phenomenon in which images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used.

Canon has announced two new portable digital photo printers in their Selphy range, the ES3 and the cheaper ES30.  Each has a built-in 15-in-1 memory card reader, are PictBridge compatible, use integrated ink & paper cartridges and have an LCD preview screen: 3.5-inches with wide-angle viewing on the ES3, 3-inches on the ES30.  The ES3 also gains 1GB of onboard storage, to allow regularly accessed images to be kept on the printer itself.

What started with many a rumor, the announcement of the Canon EOS 50D is now official. This camera will act as a follow up to the 40D and though it possesses the same body structure as its predecessor, the 50D is elevating to 15 megapixels.

Canon has announced three new camcorders in their high-definition VIXIA range, including both flash-based and HDD-based models.  The flash camcorder is the VIXIA HF11, which combines an internal 32GB solid-state drive with an SDHC slot for expansion.  The two hard-drive based models, however, are the VIXIA HG20 and VIXIA HG21, with 60GB and 120GB storage respectively, together with an SDHC slot.  All three camcorders have 24Mbps bit rate recording for enhanced detail, finer tonal gradation and improved reproduction of moving subjects.

Canon have announced new camcorders in its iVIS range, which can record in the AVCHD format to either solid-state or hard-drive based storage.  The iVIS HF11 comes with 32GB of onboard flash memory, while the iVIS HG21 has a 120GB HDD; both also include an SDHC card slot.  Each uses a 3.31-megapixel CMOS sensor and has 12x optical zoom.

Canon’s EOS Rebel XSi, the twelve-megapixel D-SLR announced back in January, has gained a sibling in the form of the Rebel XS.  Replacing the existing Rebel XT, the XS increases the resolution from 8 to 10-megapixels and the preview screen from 1.8 to 2.5-inches.  It also gains the XSi’s Live View, which allows photographers to frame their shots via the LCD rather than having to use the optical viewfinder.
