Ted Movie “hits the top bar” with Visual Effects Producer Jenny Fulle

This week as the fuzzy teddy bear toting R-rated Seth MacFarlane movie Ted comes out, we got the chance to interview Jenny Fulle of The Creative-Cartel, the group responsible for overseeing the visual effects for the film. As it is with many of the films The Creative-Cartel works with, Ted presented them with the challenge of creating a set of effects that were top-notch with a budget that was less than your everyday average blockbuster effects film would present. The result was no less than a perfectly legitimate looking transformation of MacFarlane to the body of a toy bear stuffed into a comedy with essentially no other visual effects to speak of. It had to look real, and it certainly does.

Samsung WB100 packs 16MP and 24x optical zoom

Samsung has today introduced a new camera into its range, the WB100. It’s designed to capture high quality images while maintaining a compact form factor. The camera comes with a 26x optical zoom as well as a 22.3mm wide angle lens, with the sensor capable of capturing 16.2-megapixels. On top of that, there’s 720p/30 video recording, and Samsung has included a Dual Image Stabilisation mode to reduce soft photos as a result of shaky hands. Read The Full Story

Olympus to suitors: We’ll take your cash but not your name

Olympus has been struggling recently, reporting massive losses while those within the company have been struggling to get the brand back to profitability. There have been rumors that Panasonic was a potential saviour for the company, with a plan to invest around $635 million in Olympus as part of a rescue package. Panasonic quickly denied the rumors, saying there were no plans to invest. Now an Olympus executive has said that even if it does acquire much-needed capital from another firm, the company will try to retain its brand. Read The Full Story

Nokia 808 PureView pre-order hits Amazon UK

How much are you willing to spend on Nokia’s 808 PureView? Whatever figure you had in mind, Amazon UK has thrown up a pre-order page for the 41-megapixel packing phone. The release date is pegged for June 30th, so not long to go, but if you want to own a little piece of history you’ll have to say goodbye to £499.98 (~$782). Gigapixel Aware-2 camera is the PureView of tomorrow

There’s been some interesting developments in the camera arena over the past year, with Nokia showing off the 41-megapixel packing 808 PureView at MWC and customers getting a taste of the Lytro not long after. How about a camera with a billion pixels? That’s what researchers at Duke University are currently working on, with resulting images containing extreme amounts of detail even when zoomed in. Elements Micron Standard Line brings professional support for small cameras

If you've read up on our coverage of the camera gear group called 3ality Technica, you know there's a lot going on behind the scenes when it comes to supporting the cameras that capture the biggest-name films in the industry. Elements, a division of 3ality Technica, has launched a brand new product this week by the name of Micron. This "Micron Standard Line" is a set of accessories created specifically for digital cameras that are small and lightweight. Nokia acquires technology from imaging specialist Scalado

Nokia may be downsizing right now, but today the company is buying technology that it feels will help make the best cameras in smartphones going forward. Nokia will acquire developers, intellectual property, and technologies from digital imaging company Scalado. Canon EOS Rebel T4i photo and specs leak

Is Canon ready to drop another DSLR on us? That looks to be the case, as Canon Price Watch has served up an image of what looks to be the Canon T4i. The website believes that the new camera will be announced tomorrow along with two new lenses, the 18-135mm IS STM and pancake 40mm f/2.8. The GoPro is capable of capturing some excellent action shots for such a small and portable camera, but activating and controlling one while you’re on the move can be a bit of a chore. Men in Black 3 VFX pros describe “an onion” of imagination

This week we got to sit down with the Visual Effects Supervisors from Sony Pictures Imageworks behind Men in Black 3, premiering in the USA tonight. As any Men in Black fanatic knows, the two main characters, J and K, have their single-letter names taken from their original civilian titles – oddly enough, the two men we interviewed this week go by the names Ken Ralston and Jay Redd – working equivalents of those two protectors of the universe working here to bridge the gap between reality and utterly insane fiction in the Men in Black world. What we found was that not only was this film captured with several different types of cameras and techniques, it was done in a specific Men in Black style, with time travel, fully digital copies of Will Smith and Josh Brolin, and none other than a completely re-imagined Cape Canaveral, not to mention New York city itself.
