Modern Warfare 3 beats Avatar for $1 Billion Record

Modern Warfare 3 beats Avatar for $1 Billion Record

This week the folks at Activision and Blizzard are certainly more than just a little bit joyful at the news that their game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 crossed the $1 billion mark in sales earlier today, this making it the only entertainment property in the world to eclipse the previous record of $1 billion in 17 days as set by the movie Avatar in 2009. If that wasn't enough for you, the amount of people currently in the Call of Duty community (owning and playing the game) is now approximately 30 million, this amount greater than "the combined populations of the cities of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid." Will they form their own country called Duty City? That is the question.

Do you suck at Modern Warfare 3? Hire a virtual bodyguard

Do you suck at Modern Warfare 3? Hire a virtual bodyguard

The multiplayer components of popular shooters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 are fierce. New players are often mercilessly slaughtered by veterans, and moving from the single-player campaigns to the online arena can be a traumatizing experience. So, what's a dedicated player with low self-esteem and some spare Great British Pounds to do? Hire a virtual bodyguard to cover your back.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sets new sales record on launch day

The numbers are finally in from sales of the new Call of Duty game Modern Warfare 3, and as predicted, its Tuesday launch broke the record for opening day sales. On its launch day between the U.S. and Great Britain, Call of Duty's newest installment sold 6.5 million units in one day, that breaking the record with $400 million worth of retail sales. The previous record holder was, you guessed it, the last version of Call of Duty, this one called Black Ops and having generated $360 million in sales on its first day.

Modern Warfare 3 Is What’s Wrong With the Game Business

Modern Warfare 3 Is What’s Wrong With the Game Business

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is on store shelves. And as expected, it has proven wildly popular around the world. Even better for Activision, the game’s publisher, it was able to succeed just weeks after its chief competitor, Battlefield 3, hit store shelves. As with previous years, Modern Warfare 3’s success is being touted as an entertainment industry marvel. And the vast majority of industry critics have given it high marks, thanks to its outstanding visuals, solid gameplay, and top-notch multiplayer experience.

But I, for one, am not happy to see Modern Warfare 3 succeed. In fact, I think the game is what’s wrong with the gaming industry.

Get ready with your notepads and your pencils, parents against violence in video games, because you're about to have a field day with this one: there's a video game by the name of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 being released this week that's inspired a fellow at a Best Buy to threaten to set off a bomb at the business. This is no joke, and whether or not the fellow knew that he was bat-pee crazy or not for doing what he did is still up to debate, but what IS known is that this guy definitely isn't the playing the game right this second. But don't worry, it's not his first time.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches: are you onboard?

The countdown has officially begun, and not the one leading up to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but the one that marks the time before the entire world has access to the game so that they might play together online. Over in England at London's Old Billingsgate Market there's been a gigantic launch party with music, dancing, and running at high speed as the game was handed out to attendees - or there would have been if 574 Game and Gamestation stores across the country hadn't also released the game to queues of fans having waited for hours before launch. The world record lies on the line, the entertainment-industry record for most revenue generated in its opening five days having been set by the last Call of Duty game, Black Ops.

Microsoft may ban Xbox Live accounts playing Modern Warfare 3 too early

Much excitement surrounds Activision's Call of Duty game franchise with the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 title set to be released on November 8. But somehow, in the hustle and bustle, some retail stores, including Kmart, have accidentally sold the discs early, with one ending up on eBay for more than $1,700. Although purchased legitimately, playing these discs before the release date could get your Xbox Live account banned.
