Time Warner Cable streaming to Android soon

In a move that simply had to start happening sooner or later, the folks at Time Warner Cable have announced that they'll be streaming content to Android devices starting at the end of March 2012. This service was announced in a very low-key Twitter update by Time Warner Cable's own Director of Digital Communication in New York City, Jeff Simmermon. Verizon facing governmental scrutiny over cable spectrum negotiations

Reportedly just in today from Bloomberg, Verizon Wireless’s current negotiations for spectrum with cable companies are under governmental scrutiny by the U.S. Justice Department, for their possibility of being detrimental to competition in both the cable and wireless industries. The Justice Department is allegedly looking at whether Verizon would have too much control of the spectrum, and whether some components of the deal would potentially violate antitrust laws. Cablevision irons out deal to carry HBO GO

In a press release today, cable television provider Cablevision has reached an agreement to start carrying HBO's authenticated online video portals HBO Go (and also Max Go) for its customer base. Cablevision customers who are currently subscribed to HBO and/or Cinemax will have unlimited access to the corresponding services at all times, everywhere in the U.S. with a high-speed Internet connection, and also through mobile apps on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and select Android devices. Verizon buys $3.6bn AWS spectrum for LTE expansion

Verizon Wireless has splashed out on $3.6bn worth of spectrum for its LTE expansion, grabbing 122 AWS licenses covering approximately 259m people from a joint venture made up of Comcast Corporation, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks. The deal, the carrier has announced, will also include several produce and service agreements, allowing each company to sell the other’s products and, eventually, each of the cable companies being able to offer Verizon Wireless service wholesale, likely rebranding it as their own wireless offerings.

Sky testing huge cable & WiFi broadband roll-out

Sky has trialled its own cable installations, the company has confirmed, experimenting with the possibility of bypassing BT in the UK and operating its own broadband network over which it would have full control. Another possibility - though only rumored at this stage - is using a huge expansion of The Cloud, a UK WiFi hotspot service, Electricpig reports, to bring high-speed communal wireless internet access directly to subscribers' homes. HBO: No shows for cord-cutters

HBO has warned cord-cutters looking to escape the tyranny of cable not to ever expect to see its shows on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, with the company having no plans to offer its HBO Go app to non-subscribers. HBO co-president Eric Kessler reiterated that the company would continue to offer its programming solely as an upgrade to traditional cable and satellite subscribers, mocoNews reports, arguing that the trend of canceling such services would turn around when the economy improves. Sony web TV plans could undercut cable

Sony is reportedly scheming a web TV system intended to pull the rug out from under cable operators, delivering more affordable TV content via the internet to the PS3 and other Sony hardware. The company has opened talks with NBCUniversal, Discovery and News Corp, the WSJ‘s sources claim, though Sony’s apparent aim to license a smaller package of channels – to keep its own costs, and subsequent user fees, low – is said to not be going down well among content creators.

Verizon Seeks Strike Injunction

It was just this past Sunday when the strikes began across the USA, Verizon workers from Washington D.C. all the way to Massachusetts protesting Verizon's demands of "over 100" concessions to be made on the part of Verizon workers in the face of falling profits. Affected Verizon customers include those working with Internet service, land line phones, and Verizon's FiOS television. Verizon Workers Strike, 45,000 Union Members Strong

Today workers from Washington D.C. to Massachusetts went on strike one day earlier than originally planned as a new contract failed between Verizon and phone repair technicians, customer service representatives and cable installers. This new contract included health care coverage, pensions and work rules was stalled upon Verizon demanding 100+ concessions from workers. The Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) went on strike today and say they will continue until an agreement is met. FCC Measures Actual Internet Speeds in USA

For the first time in the history of the internet, the FCC has collected a mass of data showing “real-world” speeds at which USA internet connections are working. If we can trust anyone to give us, the public, unbiased plain-number results, it’s the FCC, right? Georgia Tech professor Nick Feamster, working with the FCC on proper metrics for the test, noted that they “found that the performance of US ISPs more consistently matches their advertised promises than the ISPs in other countries—they do a pretty good job.” Of course, with numbers like what we’re seeing here and claims made by carriers around the US over the past few years, not everyone agrees.
