Sony has just released the pricing for its 55-inch and 65-inch 4K Ultra HD LED TVs. The XBR-55X900A (55-inch version) will be available for $4,999 and the XBR-65X900A (65-inch version) will be available for $6,999. They’re much cheaper than the $25,000 84-inch 4K TV Sony was selling last year, but still certainly not affordable for the average consumer. The TVs are expected to be available online and in retail stores on April 21st.

These TVs have a display resolution that’s 4 times that of a FULL HD TV (3840 x 2160) thanks to Sony’s proprietary two-chip 4K X-reailty PRO picture engine. Also thanks to the TVs’ TRILUMINOS Display, color quality is spectacular. All colors, even difficult-to-reproduce hues, will be delivered naturally and accurately. Your TV will display amazing contrast thanks to the TVs’ dynamic edge-lit LED backlighting.

The TVs will have audio that “makes every moment real” thanks to Sony’s Signal-to-Sound architecture. They will also have a S-Force front-facing, magnetic fluid speaker system to provide you with the highest-quality sound possible. The TV is FULL HD 3D capable, and will have WiFi connectivity built right in so that you can download video content from the Sony Entertainment Network.

To compliment the X900A’s beautiful display, Sony will bringing remastered Blu-Ray discs that support the 4K resolution of these TVs. When you purchase your TV, you will also be able to pick up a remastered copy of Spider-Man (the one featuring Tobey Maguire), Ghostbusters, and Angels & Demons for free. Sony will also be launching its FMP-X1 4K Media Player over the summer for $699, bundled with 10 films and video shorts viewable in 4k resolution. Later in the Fall, it will launch a video-distribution service that lets consumers buy various 4K titles for their TVs. These services will allow consumers to fully utilize their TVs’ capabilities.

Sony has announced that it will roll out 55-inch and 65-inch X9000A 4k LED TVs this year, in addition to three non-4k Bravia lines: the W900A, W802A, and W650A. The X9000A has an outstanding 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, and boasts a wide range of features, including Color IQ technology, Motionflow XR, S-FORCE Front Surround audio, and Sense of Quartz.

The X9000A utilizes the 4K X-Reality PRO processing engine, upcaling content to four times full HD resolution. The processing engine enables the incredible image quality by matching pixels against its database source while analzing, refining, and cleaning up videos. Color quality is high due to the TRILUMINOS Display, which displays a wider array of colors than you get with a standard HDTV, including various hard-to-reproduce hues.

Audio is handled via Sony’s Signal-to-Sound architecture, which, according to the announcement, “makes every moment real – from the roar of a packed stadium to the quietest whisper.” Like the video, audio is refined and optimized for the highest quality possible. The TVs have S-FORCE Front Surround and Magnetic Fluid Speakers, which are very energy efficient, reducing energy usage up to 35-percent. The X9000A can be controlled using an NFC-compatible Xperia smartphone via the One-touch Remote.

To ensure that the picture is always as clear as possible even when objects are zooming around, the X9000A features Motionflow XR 800Hz, which fills the gap between frames with transitional images, delivering up to four times the number of images as a TV without the technology. Because the X9000A is an LED TV, the Motionflox XR will provide an LED boost to intensify lighting when needed, while darkening will take place as well when called for.

The X9000A 55-inch and 65-inch will be launched in Europe in July.

There was a time when Sony’s BRAVIA TVs led the industry, and were the automatic first-choice for home entertainment enthusiasts. Little stays still in consumer electronics, however, and now Sony finds itself fighting Korean upstarts for the King of TVs crown. Into the fray wades the Sony BRAVIA HX850, on the SlashGear test bench in 55-inch form, and bearing a $2,500 RRP as well as a lengthy list of specs and abilities. Read on for our review.

Design

Sony’s “monolithic design” tagline for the HX850 series isn’t exactly the catchiest of slogans, and it doesn’t really do the HDTV justice. It’s certainly pared back: a sheet of toughened Corning Gorilla Glass – ideal for those accidentally-hurled-Wiimote moments – with a few chromed highlights around the edge, but nothing that would distract you from the picture quality.

The default stand is a simple plastic affair, sturdy but uninspiring, though Sony also offers a premium stand which has integrated speakers and props the HX850 back at a slight angle. Alternatively, it can be wall-mounted, at which point the sleek lines begin to look even more appealing. Physical controls are limited to a single row of buttons hidden on the lower right side at the back: power, volume, channel, input, and menu.

Unlike Samsung’s twin remote bundle and advanced voice-control system, Sony’s remote control is an altogether more traditional affair. It’s on the compact side, though isn’t short on buttons, which means some of the keys are a little fiddly. They’re also not backlit, which is something else Samsung does right.

Features and Connectivity

In general, though, the HX850′s spec sheet leaves few boxes unticked. The edge-backlit LED display runs at 1080p resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate, and there’s active 3D support though oddly Sony doesn’t actually include any glasses in the box; instead you have to buy them yourself, from $49.99 apiece. Sony’s X-Reality Pro Engine technology is implemented, which promises to analyze each frame of the picture in real-time, and tweak it to remove noise, increase sharpness, and optimize the color and contrast. Then there’s Motionflow, which achieves that 240Hz refresh rate by calculating intermediary frames based on the likely color and movement of the source content frames either side of them.

Connectivity includes four HDMI ports – two on the side and two on the bottom), two composite video (one of which can double as component video) both on the rear, two USB 2.0 ports on the side, an RF antenna connection on the bottom, three analog audio inputs (two on the rear; one on the side), a PC input (D-Sub), and an ethernet port. There’s also an audio output on the side and a digital audio output on the bottom.

However, Sony has also equipped the HX850 with integrated WiFi b/g/n, meaning you can hook up to a network wirelessly and without having to plug in an external dongle as with some TVs. There’s also support for Skype, with an optional camera (RRP $149.99) plugging directly into the HX850 and allowing you to make and receive video calls. The camera wasn’t supplied for our review, however.

Smart TV

With both wireless and WiFi onboard, it comes as no surprise that the HX850 supports various streaming media features. If you have accounts with Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, or Sony’s own Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services, then you’ll be able to stream TV shows and movies directly to the HX850 with no need for a computer in-between.

Aside from Skype, there’s also YouTube, Picasa, Slacker Radio, Facebook, and Twitter support, together with various Yahoo apps and widgets thanks to Sony’s partnership with the company. It’s also possible to push video directly from a laptop or mobile device via WiFi Direct, or you can plug in a USB drive – only FAT, not NTFS, formatted drives are supported, mind – and play video, audio, and picture content stored on there. Currently, the HX850 supports MPEG1/2/4, AVCHD, WMV, MP3, WMA, JPG, and BMP files.

It all works, but it lacks the finessed UI we’ve seen on other smart TVs, particularly Samsung’s. While we could do without Samsung’s gimmicky gesture-navigation system and even its voice control, though the latter works surprisingly well, its interface in general is far slicker and more attractive than that of the HX850. Functional, then, but hardly inspirational.

Performance

Happily, the Sony dragon awakes when it comes to picture quality. There are various modes, including several variants of gaming, sports, cinema, photos, and an auto setting that attempts to already pick between them, though we found the two cinema modes did the best job for most of our viewing. Brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, color temperature, hue, and noise reduction are easily accessed, and you can dig into the more advanced settings like gamma, white balance, control over local dimming, contrast and black correction, and whiteness enhancer, in a sub-menu.

Lots to play with, then, but even with the default settings for Cinema 1 mode we were impressed by what the HX850 could do. A little calibration work, however, and the HX850′s true skills became clear. Blacks are deep and crisp, though not quite to the same level as the Samsugn UN55ES8000 we reviewed back in July (albeit a TV with a $1,250 higher RRP), but the colors are particularly impressive – even across a broad viewing angle – and even when we took advantage of the set’s ability to upscale standard-definition content, it proved pleasingly free of artifacts.

Motionflow did its job well, and we saw no ghosting or frame untidiness even in fast-moving scenes, such as action movies or sports games. Sony had supplied some active 3D glasses, and the effect is solid though with the occasional glimpse of crosstalk during busier moments onscreen. Sharp delineation of color or contrast caused the most problems.

Wrap-Up

Beautiful colors, superlative connectivity, and discretely handsome style. The Sony HX850 may not shout about its skills when you first look at it, but its LED display is among the best we’ve seen. Contrast levels and some hiccups in 3D performance would be our main complaints over image quality, though they’re minor and – if you spend a little time finessing the settings – can mostly be ironed out.

Otherwise, it’s only the add-ons that prove disappointing: the underwhelming remote that doesn’t feel like it belongs with a TV that has an RRP of $2,600; the lackluster smart TV menus; and having to pay another $150 for the Skype camera (where Samsung builds in its webcam). With street pricing edging just under $2,000, however, we can be a little more accommodating of those flaws.

In the end, it’s the screen quality that helps the HX850 stand out. Invest some time working around the contrast issue, and you’ll be rewarded with a set that’s great for movies and gaming.

Who needs windows at home, when you can have an 84-inch TV running at 3,840 x 2,160 resolution on the wall instead. Sony’s new 4K Bravia 84X900 is a masterpiece of overkill (though we wouldn’t object if Sony sent us one for “long term loan”) but, as overkill goes, it’s one that heralds the next phase in super-high-definition home entertainment. We stood in awe of the pixel-packing behemoth at IFA; read on for our first impressions.

Vast. Bright. Incredible. It’s easy to be broken down to just a few stuttering words when you’re in front of the 84X900: 4K is one of those technologies that proves truly jaw-dropping when you first see it. 1080p suddenly looks clunky and jagged in comparison; you have to get right up close to the Bravia’s panel before you see the individual pixels.

It’s not just the individual detail, though; it’s the smoothness. Sony was showing a looping clip of a young girl surrounded by landscapes and floating water bubbles, and there was no smudging or blurring, just incredibly life-like movement.

It’s not a small TV, in terms of thickness, but we’ve a feeling most people won’t object to that if they can afford the 84X900. Exactly how much that will require is unclear; Sony says the new set will begin shipping from September, though hasn’t given a final sticker price yet.

Well folks, today marks the first major day of IFA 2012 over in Berlin, Germany, and we had tons of exciting and worthwhile news from Sony, Samsung and multiple others. For those that missed the bulk of the news in the early hours this morning we have a full breakdown of Sony’s IFA aspirations. From 84″ TV’s to Android tablets and more. Check it out below.

Now obviously Sony has tons of products on display for IFA 2012, so we’re just going to round up and mention a few of the important product launches that stood out the most this morning. That all starts with their new 84″ 4K Bavia HDTV. Yup they just launched their first 4K TV and it comes in at a massively impressive 84″ with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. It upscales everything into 4K and even has some passive 3D features for that crowd too. It’ll be expensive and hit stores sometime early September. Who’s buying?

Next up we wanted to talk mobile considering Sony’s been slowly but surely getting more popular in the smartphone market. Today Sony rebranded their tablet line into the XPERIA name and launched a new and improved Sony Xperia Tablet S. It rocks a quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich all for $399. Next up was smartphone and Sony had a new range of three smartphones. The top-tier Xperia T, then they also launched an Xperia V and a budget friendly J.

That was then followed by a brand new Microsoft Surface competitor with their new Windows 8 convertible PC called the Sony VAIO Duo 11 tablet. The picture above should explain plenty otherwise hit the link for Sony’s take on a Surface-like Windows 8 tablet PC. It rocks a Core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM and up to 256GB SSD options. Not bad right?

Then to round off a few more interesting aspects of Sony’s day we have a personalized 3D headset called the Sony HMZ-T2 Personal 3D viewer. This unit is designed to give users a personal, private, and unique perspective of 3D content and looks rather interesting. We’ll be hearing more on that soon I’m sure. Lastly they showed off a few NFC-capable Bluetooth wireless speaker systems that will work with the above Xperia tablet and smartphones. Simply tap the device to the speaker and NFC will enable music playback and start right off from your last played favorite track. This is music enjoyment in its simplest form. Last but not least they announced a micro action cam to take on the GoPro called the Sony Action Cam.

We will have plenty more coverage from Sony, and everything else at this years IFA 2012 event so stay tuned and don’t forget to stop by our IFA 2012 Hub.

Sony’s busy rolling out new products as fast as they can talk this afternoon here at IFA 2012 in Berlin, Germany, and they’ve just detailed a massively beautiful new 84″ TV for all you HD fanatics. This stunning new 84″ 4K Bravia TV sure looked amazing on stage, and we have a few details after the break.

This is Sony’s first 4K TV — and it’s that big! This TV doesn’t just have 4K capabilities but it offers full 4K upscaling from simply any source. This will bring anything you watch to life in the living room thanks to the Sony 84″ TV. Sadly this TV was just announced by the folks at Sony so we are still rather light on the details as things develop. However, we do have a video below for everyone.

This massive new TV you’ll surely be drooling about all week comes with a mind boggling 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, passive 3D, and what Sony called a “10 unit live speaker system.” Obviously we don’t have any details or pricing yet at this time, but will update as soon as we hear the large price point this beauty can be yours for.

According to the video above this new and impressive 84″ 4K TV will be available in select Sony stores starting September 6th. Who’s buying?

If you’ve ever been in the position we’re in as publishers headed to the Consumer Electronics Show for our umpteenth time in a row at the start of 2012, you know there’s one whole heck of a lot of invites headed our way – thats why if a group wants to stand out, they’ve got to be unique – that’s just what Sony’s done with no less than a wedding e-vite for that very purpose. What this wedding is supposed to be is a tie between Internet and TV (by Bravia), and the whole shebang is here, photos, “about us”, and everything in between. Not that we weren’t going to go see Sony at the show, but we’re doubly excited to attend now!

When you send out a wedding invite, especially for a relatively fake one like the one we’ve got going on right here, you need to stick to the basics. Thats why their letter starts with the following introduction:

Our special day is almost here. We’re so excited we can hardly stand it. On this site, you’ll find all kinds of info about this special marriage. How we got here and what it means for everyone – our friends, family and fans. Plus a few extra goodies. Don’t forget to sign the guest book!

Beep boop boop,
TV + Internet

Beep boop boop indeed, you funny pair you, and what a great wedding it shall be! The television is a Bravia machine, as the invite will tell you, one that’s more than ready make the bond happen between itself and its future mate, Internet.

Bravia has an inexplicable ability to catch the eyes of everyone in the room. Always the center of attention, she has a striking look and excellent sense of style. She is a trend-setter and was ahead of her friends and rivals when she took a chance on Internet. She recognized his eclectic personality, his abitity to make friends and influence people, and was hooked. Some have called them a perfect match, but our Bride just thinks he is “smart.”

The groom SEN, better known to you as the Sony Entertainment Network, will join this party in its finest rainbow logo attire, bringing sweet connections to the party:

SEN, the Internet’s friends have always said that he was destined for greatness, but he lacked a grounding influence. He wins hearts and minds of everyone with his strength and ability to entertain, but every visit is a new discovery. And though he has had a wild youth, his infinite potential and sense of adventure hooked Bravia. His ability to complement her beauty with his knowledge of the arts, science, music and movies has certainly made them a winning pair. To this day, the groom still gets googly-eyed at the sight of his soon-to-be wife.

Later on in the invite you’ll find that the Father of the Internet will be played by Al gore, that Music Unlimited is the Groom’s Sister, and that the Rich Uncle will be played by the VPL-1000ES. Strange place it’s going to be, yes. The event itself will take place on the 11th of January at 8:30 PM local time (PST) and you can find the invite in the strangest of places: wedsite.com. Sony you’ve outdone yourself with oddness. This might also be a good time to remind you that our portal, folks, will be [CES 2012] for all the electronics you can handle; see you there!

Sony has updated its smart TV range with new social networking integration, high-definition YouTube video support and remote control from VAIO or other computers. The new firmware for the 2011 BRAVIA line-up brings Facebook galleries, messages, status updates and links to the internet-connected HDTVs, while a new Twitter ticker scrolls updates across the bottom of the screen. Meanwhile, it’s possible to share Track ID results – Sony’s song identifying technology – on Twitter too.

YouTube has been available on BRAVIA smart TVs for some time now, but this new update boosts quality support to HD where available. Sony’s existing image processing tech is also retained, further massaging footage.

Meanwhile, the company has released a version of its Remote Keyboard Lite app for non-Sony laptops, allowing them to be used to enter URLs in the Opera-based browser, search for streaming content and navigate through the menus. You’ll need a Windows 7 computer, however, which means those with older laptops – or, indeed, Macs – are left out in the cold.

The new Sony BRAVIA 2011 firmware should be pushed out automatically to sets, as long as you’ve got it hooked up to an internet connection.

Sony released a major update today for its Music Unlimted service that streams music to PlayStation 3 consoles. The update brings an interface overhaul for the service on PS3, but more importantly, adds new music discovery capabilities as well as a “My Channels” feature that lets you customize your music listening experience.

The My Channels feature seems to take a page from Pandora, letting you create your own radio stations with songs selected based around your favorite artists. You type in the artist name and the station will automatically be populated with songs from that artist as well as similar songs from other artists. It’s also easier now to skip tracks by simply hitting the “dislike” button to skip to the next.

Additionally, your channels can now be fully edited and controlled directly from your PS3 console. You can create new playlists from scratch as well as add and delete songs from existing playlists. These new features are available to both Basic and Premium subscribers. A firmware update will roll out soon to Sony’s 2010 and 2011 Bravia TVs, PCs, and Blu-ray players.

Sony has been making TVs and other things for a very long time. The Sony Bravia line of HD and 3D TVs are some of the most popular around the world including in Sony’s home country of Japan. Sony has made an announcement today that isn’t good for the hoards of Japanese HDTV owners that purchased the Bravia brand. Sony has been asked by the Japanese trade ministry to recall 1.6 million Bravia TVs that are on the Japanese market.

The TVs covered in the recall were sold as far back as 2007. The reason for the recall is that a faulty component inside the sets poses a risk of fire. The sets in the recall are LCD units and the recall was forced after a September incident where an owner of an affected set had to call the fire department after a small fire happened in his TV.

Bloomberg reports that so far 11 incidents of overheating have been reported in Japan concerning Bravia sets since 2008. There have been no injuries reported. The suspected component is a faulty part of the backlight system that can overheat and melt the top of the set. The same suspect transformer is used in all five of the Bravia models being recalled. No recall has been issued outside of Japan.

Update: Recalled Bravia models include: KDL-40D3400, KLD-40D3500, KDL-40D3550, KDL-40D3660, KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40X3000 and KDL-40X3500 models.

Press Release:

Opera chosen by Sony for LCD television and Blu-ray Disc players

Oslo, Norway, and Tokyo, Japan, January 19, 2011

Opera Software today announced to deliver its world-class browser on Sony BRAVIA televisions and Blu-ray Disc (TM) players. Opera aims to deliver more “lean-forward”, interactive components to connected home users by offering Opera’s solution to Sony’s state-of-the-art devices.

The Opera Devices Software Developer Kit (SDK) is the cross-platform, standards-based backbone of Opera for connected TVs and Blu-ray Disc players. As a robust, open platform for creating web-standards-based solutions, Opera Devices SDK forms the ideal foundation for developing full web browsers and user interfaces. Opera brings customization and ease of content distribution to global markets by enabling the delivery of web applications, widgets, full web browsing and emerging standards such as HTML5, HbbTV and OIPF.

Previously, consumers were required to have multiple devices to surf the Internet while watching television. As more connected home electronics devices arrive in living rooms, Internet use is changing. The Internet is becoming more closely connected with people’s everyday life, such as the ability to enjoy video on-demand services on television, exchange opinions with friends through social networks about the program they are watching, and buy online directly from their televisions the items seen on TV dramas.

“The Web as we know it is evolving, and we are committed to making it more accessible across diverse devices,” said Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer, Opera Software. “Our ability to address key hybrid broadcast-broadband initiatives in numerous markets makes us a natural fit with Sony. By delivering both a global viewpoint and the necessary technology, we are able to stay on the cutting edge of the industry.”
About Opera Software ASA

Opera Software ASA has redefined web browsing for PCs, mobile phones and other networked devices. Opera’s cross-platform web-browser technology is renowned for its performance, standards compliance and small size, while giving users a faster, safer and more dynamic online experience. Opera Software is headquartered in Oslo, Norway, with offices around the world. The company is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol OPERA.

Sony has launched the next step in its attempt to take on iTunes, in the shape of Music Unlimited. Using the same Qriocity cloud system as Sony’s previous Video On Demand service, Music Unlimited kicks things off with a 6m-strong catalog and support for network-enabled BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray players and home theater systems, your PS3 or your laptop; meanwhile, Android-based phones and tablets are next in line.

Functionally, the service sounds a lot like Pandora: the basic plan allows for unlimited forward skipping of tracks and uses a thumbs up/down system to rate them and improve future suggestions. A premium subscription allows access to each of the tracks in the catalog, playlists and Top 100 channel access. Music Unlimited can also create custom playlists from your mood, using SensMe.

“Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity” will initially be available in the UK and Ireland, with the Basic plan priced at £3.99/€3.99 and the Premium plan at £9.99/€9.99. The US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand launches will be announced in 2011.

Sony has quietly begun sales of an integrated HDTV and PlayStation, though the BRAVIA KDL22PX300 does only give you a PS2 rather than a PS3. Available in the UK for a bargain £199.95 ($312), the 22-inch set runs at 720p-friendly 1366 x 768 resolution and has four HDMI ports and three USB ports (two of which are apparently USB 1.1).

There’s also an ethernet port, for hooking up to Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video service, and a pair of optical digital audio outputs. A single Freeview digital TV tuner, SCART socket, component video input and VGA input round out the main specs; the only thing missing is that you can’t wall-mount it, which would’ve been a nice touch for a kid’s bedroom.

Given the UK-spec tuner we’re guessing the BRAVIA KDL22PX300 won’t be showing up on North American shores any time soon, though we suppose Sony could well come out with a US-spec version if there’s sufficient demand. It’s available now.

As I said this morning, the tablet wave is really gaining speed, quite a few of the posts today ending up being tablet or tablet related.
SlashSECURITY
Homeland Security Investigations unit ICE has been busy this week, launching a major crackdown on what appears to be two categories of webpages: copyrighted music download sites (such as torrent listing sites) and sites selling knockoffs of trademarked goods (such as designer handbags). The owner of one of these sites, Torrent-Finder, had the following to say to the site that’s reporting on the situation, TorrentFreak: “My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court! … I firstly had DNS downtime. While I was contacting GoDaddy I noticed the DNS had changed. Godaddy had no idea what was going on and until now they do not understand the situation and they say it was totally from ICANN.” Be on your guard, but we’re not sure what that could entail, as no details on how to appeal HSI’s seizings seem to be available.

Despite the fact that Sony just gave the PlayStation 3 support for 3D playback, that’s not stopping the company from giving its customers all sorts of different ways to experience the 3D technology it loves so much, and is pushing so hard. That being said, Sony has just announced their brand new PlayMemories application for the PlayStation 3, which you will be able to download from the PlayStation Store. If you like looking at 3D panoramic still photos, then this is the application that you’ll need.

PlayMemories is a way for those of you out there with a 3D-capable Sony-branded camera to organize and view your photos right from your PS3. As long as you have a 3D-capable TV, that is. Like one of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA sets. Sony’s making sure that users have not only the usefulness of a photo organizer at their disposal, but one that’s also fun to use. After you download the application, you’ll be able to put your 2D and 3D photos into any kind of order you want, and then go through them at your leisure.

You’ll be able to zoom in and out, as well as pan to the right and left, as you see fit, just by using Sony’s SIXAXIS controllers. While Sony isn’t saying whether or not you can use any 3D-capable camera to take advantage of this new application, they’re stressing that you need a Sony-branded one, so that’s worth noting. As for the price and release date, the application itself will be free, and you will be able to download it some time later this month.

Having a TV in your home isn’t what it used to be. With the progression of technology, and the way that we enjoy entertainment expanding every day, TVs have to be able to do more than just simply feed you your standard cable or satellite programming. Now they’ve got to be able to connect to your WiFi connection, and let you update your favorite social networks whenever you want. And let’s not forget streaming video, either. Sony’s BRAVIA HDTVs are about to get a major upgrade in that department.

Sony has just announced that they are going to make available BBC’s iPlayer, a ridiculously popular video streaming service across the pond. And, considering how popular Video-On-Demand (VOD) is becoming, having one that’s as popular as iPlayer is a good move for Sony to make. For those in the UK who have Sony’s PlayStation 3, then you’ve probably been taking full advantage of iPlayer’s goodness.

The service is available now, and will be able to allow customers to use 7 day catch-up, which will let you catch up with your favorite shows over the previous week. You’ll be able to access the service through the Xross Media Bar (XMB). So, if you’re in the right neck of the woods and have yourself a BRAVIA Internet connected TV, let us know what you think of the addition in the comments below.

Sony loves to bundle their announcements. No problems here, especially when they all fall in the same line of HDTVs, featuring that 3D technology you either love or hate. This time around its 3 brand new BRAVIA sets, all of which are littered with features, but also come packing that price tag we all love or hate. Jump in after the break to take in the feature set, and start saving your pennies for what could very well be your next splurge purchase.

The 46NX810 is a 46-inch 1080p full HD resolution HDTV, but it also comes fully capable of playing your favorite 3D movies. (You’re looking forward to Piranha 3D coming to your living room, right?) It also features DynamicEdge LED back-lighting, which features local dimming. You also get MotionFlow PRO with a refresh rate of 240Hz. There’s integrated WiFi, making sure that you’ll be able to connect to your home network easily enough. And considering it’s a BRAVIA set, you get access to the proprietary widgets. For all other models except the 46-inch model, there’s the LightSensor feature, which will automatically adjust the brightness of your set depending on the light within the room.

We received two press releases. In the first, all of the TVs seem to have the same features. However, in the press release you’ll read below, the 46-inch model does not include the LightSensor feature, so you’ll have to just live with whatever your brightness is set at. As we just mentioned, there’s the 46-inch model. The next stage up is the 55-incher, and then finally the 60-inch model. They are all due in September. The 46-inch model will cost you about $3,000; the 55-inch will run you about $3,700; and that 60-inch set will cost you a cold $4,700. Check out the full press release below.

The push for 3D may have started in the movie theaters, but it’s definitely a sensation that’s invading our living rooms. Whether you’re a fan or not probably doesn’t matter anymore (outside of your own living room, of course), because it doesn’t look like companies are slowing down any time soon. Sony, in fact, has just announced that they’ve got the largest array of 3D-capable devices on the market, which is bolstered by the fact that you can now pre-order your favorite BRAVIA 3D HDTV from their online store.

The 3D HDTVs all feature the same things: incorporation of a frame sequential display, that work in conjunction with the active-shutter glasses and Sony’s proprietary high frame rate technology. All this, in the hopes that their TVs offer the smoothest, full high-definition 3D image. One of the most noteworthy of the 3D sets is the BRAVIA XBR-LX900 HDTV, which has a built-in 3D sync transmitter, and Sony is being nice enough to throw in two pair of active-shutter glasses.

“3D is revolutionizing the entertainment industry and only Sony is involved in every stage of the ecosystem,” said Chris Fawcett, vice president of Sony’s television business. “Leveraging deep 3D expertise from the company’s theatrical and professional groups, Sony products are optimized to offer the best possible 3D home entertainment experience.”

The full line of HDTVs come in sizes ranging from 40-inches to 60-inches, and you can expect to drop anywhere between $2,100 and $5,000 for the HDTV of your 3D dreams. Although, Sony’s all about the free gifts, so consumers who purchase and register one of the new 3D BRAVIA models will receive a copy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray 3D™ title Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs as well as Blu-ray 3D title Deep Sea. Maybe not your favorite movies, but hey, they’re free.

Sony have become the latest to announce a new HDTV range at CES 2010, and like LG and Toshiba there are some 3D-ready models in among the mixture. Naming your style ethos a “Monolithic Design Concept” seems like a recipe for disaster, but Sony’s 2010 BRAVIA range is appealing in a sharp edged way. There are a full 38 models on offer; more details after the cut.

Out of the range, it’s the LX900 that gets 3D capabilities, along with its 1080p High Definition. A set of RealD 3D glasses are included, along with the necessary transmitter; you can also outfit the BRAVIA HX900 and HX800-series by picking both things up optionally.

The BRAVIA LX900 also gets 240Hz refresh technology, LED edge backlighting, WiFi for media streaming and social networking widgets, and BRAVIA Engine 3 DSP. Unfortunately while Sony have bucked the CES trend and assigned prices to many of their models, the interesting ones are left unpriced; we’ll have to wait and see how much the company reckon 3D is worth.

Press Release:

SONY MAKES 3D COME TO LIFE AT HOME WITH FIRST 3D CAPABLE BRAVIA HDTVs

Monolithic Design Concept Changes Viewing Environment Merging Style and Function

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH #14200), Jan. 6, 2010 – From black-and-white, to color, to digital, Sony Electronics is once again setting the new standard for how televisions look and perform. Today, the company introduced its 2010 BRAVIA® LCD HDTV line featuring its first 3D HDTVs, a new innovative and stylish Monolithic Design Concept, and LED backlighting.

The new Sony televisions are another example of how Sony is providing consumers with networked products that enhance the home entertainment experience by offering built-in Wi-Fi® (802.11) for easy access to BRAVIA Internet video, BRAVIA Internet Widgets and personal content through Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certified™ home networks.

The line is made up of 38 models ranging in screen sizes from 60 to 22-inches. The LX900 series offers integrated 3D functionality with Sony’s 3D active shutter glasses and built-in 3D transmitter, while the HX900 and HX800-series are 3D capable using Sony 3D active shutter glasses and 3D transmitter (each sold separately). The 3D models incorporate a frame sequential display and active-shutter glasses that work together with Sony’s proprietary high frame rate technology reproducing full high-definition 3D images.

“Sony’s 3D HDTVs leverage the breadth and depth of the company’s expertise to create an entirely unique experience at home that draws you closer to entertainment than ever before,” said Jeff Goldstein, vice president for Sony’s television business. “Sony will continue to own the living room by delivering TVs that work synergistically; both in function and design.”

Models in the LX900, HX900, NX800, and NX700 series feature Sony’s all new Monolithic Design. The design concept aims to change the entire TV viewing environment by delivering the most innovative, stylish, and high-quality experience possible.

With quality materials forming a simple, flush viewing surface with crisp edges and a smooth border, the models blend into the home’s interior and allow viewers to focus completely on beautiful on-screen images without distraction from unnecessary decorative elements. Also, a unique six degree upward tilt option offers a more natural, comfortable viewing experience.

Central to the slim profile Monolithic Design is Sony’s Edge LED backlight. Designed to deliver deep blacks and brilliant whites, the design allows for a slim form factor and an outstanding contrast ratio helping the new models impress not only when they are displaying beautiful images, but also when turned off as they blend into the home’s décor.

BRAVIA XBR-LX900 Series 3D HDTV
Available this summer, the BRAVIA XBR-LX900 series features integrated 3D functionality and screen sizes including 60 (XBR-60LX900), 52 (XBR-52LX900), 46 (XBR-46LX900), and 40-inch (XBR-40LX900).

The full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) models feature Edge LED backlight, Sony’s new Monolithic Design and Motionflow™ PRO 240Hz motion compensation technology, which helps produce smooth images in fast moving content such as sport and action movies. Sony’s 240Hz technology also reduces the mixing of images of 3D content assigned to the left and right eyes, while the BRAVIA Engine™ 3 full digital video processor uses a collection of enhanced algorithms to significantly reduce noise, enhance overall image detail, and optimize contrast so every scene produces sharp, vibrant, life-like images.

The LX900 models also feature Sony’s new OptiContrast panel. Designed with a clear surface treatment and a resin sheet sandwiched between the LCD display panel and glass plate, the OptiContrast panel minimizes the reflection and refraction of external and internal light producing deeper images with superior black levels even in bright rooms.

The models include integrated Wi-Fi for an easy connection to broadband home networks. Once connected, users can access thousands of streaming movies, videos, music and more from Netflix®, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube™, Slacker® Internet Radio, Pandora®, NPR, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, and over 25 total providers through the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video platform.

Also, with the touch of a button, users can access the latest in news, weather, USA Today sports, Yahoo Finance, Twitter, Flickr photos, and FrameChannel through small applications called BRAVIA Internet Widgets. The widgets can be uniquely positioned anywhere on the TV screen for a custom viewing experience.

The models also feature playback of personal content including digital pictures, video, and music through USB and DLNA® certified network connections.

Another new feature is Sony’s Intelligent Presence Sensor with face detection. The sensor detects if you’ve stepped away from the TV or are not watching the screen and automatically dims the backlight. After an extended period, the TV will turn off if no one has re-entered the viewing area. Additionally, the Intelligent Presence Sensor’s newly added Position Control feature detects a user’s viewing position to deliver optimized video/sound balance, while the Distance Alert feature helps to keep small children at an eye-friendly distance.

The models also offer Sony’s BRAVIA Sync™ for easy operation with other BRAVIA Sync devices such as AV receivers and Blu-ray Disc™ players, and TVGuide® on-screen channel guide.

BRAVIA XBR-HX900 Series 3D Ready HDTV
The XBR-HX900 series 3D ready (with the addition of Sony active shutter glasses and transmitter, both sold separately) full HD (1920 x 1080p) models feature Intelligent Dynamic LED backlight and Sony’s new Monolithic Design.

The model’s full-array LED backlighting improves contrast and dynamic range by local dimming that controls the LED backlight level by area so that detail is maintained in the dark areas, while other areas are driven near peak brightness. The technology reduces unnecessary light emission resulting in true and deep blacks compared to conventional LED backlit models.

The models also feature Sony’s new ambient sensor that automatically optimizes the TV’s color and brightness according to the room environment and lighting conditions for optimized settings.

Featuring screen sizes including 52 (XBR-52HX900) and 46-inches (XBR-46HX900), the model offers four HDMI 1.4 inputs, one component input, one composite input, one component/composite selectable inputs, and a PC input (HD15) with PC/TV picture-in-picture.

The models also feature:
· Monolithic Design
· Motionflow PRO 240Hz motion compensation technology
· OptiContrast panel
· USB Wireless-LAN adapter for easy wireless network connection (sold separately)
· BRAVIA Internet Video
· BRAVIA Engine 3 with Intelligent Image Enhancer
· USB and DLNA photo/music/video playback

BRAVIA KDL-HX800 Series 3D Ready HDTV
Also 3D ready (with the addition of Sony active shutter glasses and transmitter, sold separately), the BRAVIA KDL-HX800 series will be available this summer in screen sizes including 55-inch class (54.6-inches measured diagonally) (KDL-55HX800), 46 (KDL-46HX800) and 40-inch (KDL-40HX800).

The full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) models utilize a Dynamic Edge LED backlight with local dimming for improved contrast and dynamic range.

Other features include:

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall at Sony Australia when they came up with this one. ”Guys, it’s a worldwide recession, we need a promotion to keep people buying the PS3 and BRAVIA HDTVs. I know some of you want to run a competition and give the darned things away, but I think we’d be far better off firing one against the other and sticking it up on YouTube.” Hence how we end up with a video of a PS3 being launched at 22 meters per second toward a poor, defenceless flat-panel TV.

As you might expect, the results involve a smashed TV and a bouncing PS3. According to Sony Australia, the console hits the LCD with 774.4 joules of kinetic energy, translating to 790.2kg of force onto the glass itself.

It’s all in aid of publicising a promotion for Australian Sony buyers, who can get a free PS3 if they buy a qualifying HDTV from the company’s BRAVIA range. As for those of us not Down Under, we can just enjoy watching a heavy console fly through the air with the greatest of ease.

In fact the sets measure a scant 16.6mm (52-inch) or 15.8mm (46-inch) thick, partly because Sony have offset the connectivity portion to the separate, wirelessly-connected media receiver. That box not only accepts the usual HDMI inputs but has internet connectivity and offers video-on-demand support.

Ports include four HDMI, USB, both ethernet and a telephone port (for the integrated modem), optical digital out, PC and S-Video, and there are twin 10W speakers too. No word on pricing nor when we might see them in the US or Europe.

Sony have announced that, as of fall 2009, Netflix, Demand Media and ON Networks will arrive on their BRAVIA HDTVs. A standard feature on any upcoming Sony BRAVIA internet video-capable HDTV, and usable on existing sets courtesy of Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video Link module, Netflix users will be able to access their instant queue lists on their TV.

As with other implementations we’ve seen, actually adding TV shows or films to the queue will need to be carried out on a computer; there’s no way to navigate the full catalog on the HDTV itself. Netflix joins Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube and various other streaming media systems on the Sony devices.

The Sony BRAVIA Internet Media Link box is available for roughly $300, and connects via HDMI. Sony’s actual internet-enabled HDTVs are, unsurprisingly, more expensive.

Press Release:

SONY ADDS NETFLIX TO BRAVIA INTERNET VIDEO PLATFORM

Golflink, LIVESTRONG.COM, eHow and ON Networks Also Join Expanding Content Line Up

SAN DIEGO, July 9, 2009 – Netflix, Demand Media™, and ON Networks® are the latest content providers to join Sony’s BRAVIA® Internet Video platform.

In the fall of 2009, Netflix members will be able to instantly watch more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes on Sony BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs and on previous BRAVIA models compatible with Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video Link module.

With BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs, users can enjoy access to one of the largest collections of premium and free on-demand entertainment directly on their HDTV. By connecting the TV to their existing broadband connection, users can access online video, music, and content from over 25 providers including Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube™, Sports Illustrated, Sony Pictures, Crackle, Slacker, Epicurious.com, Concierge.com, Style.com, and Dailymotion.

“Sony was first to bring Internet video to TV and we continue to deliver the one of the largest and most diverse catalogs of content to customers through BRAVIA Internet Video,” said Jeff Goldstein, vice president of Sony Electronics’ television business. “Adding Netflix gives many of our customers access to a vast library of streaming content through their existing Netflix accounts.”

Movies and TV episodes from Netflix can be watched instantly on Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs through a Queue-based user interface. Netflix members can add movies and TV episodes to their instant Queues on the Netflix Web site. Those choices will then be automatically displayed when a user selects Netflix on the BRAVIA Internet Video platform.
Demand Media recently launched content on the BRAVIA Internet Video platform from its wholly-owned Web sites including Golflink.com, LIVESTRONG.COM, and eHow.com.

GolfLink provides hundreds of its valuable instructional golf videos from world class coaches like Hank Haney and Jim McLean, as well as hole-by-hole golf course flyovers, both of which help viewers to prepare and improve their game.

“Sony has begun the transition from a closed system to an open one … Next we will be expanding the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3, because the number of PS3 units sold puts a limit on the scale of the network possible. Sony has a vertical structure for each product line, an organisational structure that resists change, so it will take time to achieve this network growth. However, a large number of employees share my opinion on this” Howard Stringer, CEO, Sony

Sony has been tipped as planning to jettison the UMD drive currently used on the PSP for pure online delivery in future iterations. While the company has denied such a policy, this latest statement does suggest that UMD will take a step back from the primary source of title distribution.

Given that Sony have made headway in standardizing the XMB GUI across much of its consumer electronics products, it seems likely that the PSN will evolve into a catch-all digital distribution system. As Stringer says, the physical number of PS3 consoles sold will be the hard limit to users of the Network in its current format.

Coming this summer of 2009, Sony will release a series of Bravia Eco TV in the range 40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch widescreen displays, which utilize a presence sensor-based function and a higher luminous efficiency HCFL light source at deduced size, to cut down power consumption as low as 40%. The same technology, were in fact, being used at current V5 series TV lineup, and the folks at Nikkie were invited to examine its features and effectiveness in dealing with the power saving modes.

The exhibition was held last week at the Ikejiri Institute of Design, Japan. Three display models from a 40-inch V5 LCD, 40inch V1 LCD and nearly a decade old 36-inch CRT TV were put on display to compare the total power consumption of each set. At one scene, still image taken and shown above, indicated more than 50% power reduction with the newest technology. Now, as you probably know, the comparison could have minor flaws due to the different settings or display modes being used on the TVs. For instance, the extreme dynamic mode is known to have consumed more energy due to its nature of high luminance output, and the same picture mode could be different from one set to another.

To test the effectiveness of the presence sensor, the energy intakes were measured on a lone V5 series TV with sensor turned on and off in Dynamic mode. Once again, Sony Eco TV will able to deliver more 40% power reduction as claimed, a 140 watt dynamic driven picture was slashed to around 60-70 watts with the help from the presence sensor.

So what’s behind the “Presence Sensor” and how does it effect the power consumption?

According to Nikkie, it’s an infrared sensor placed in the lower center part of the front face to scan moving objects in a range of 80° and 30° at both horizontal and vertical directions. It’s constantly communicating with the display to alter the luminance of the backlit depend of surrounding ambient brightness, not much different than the dynamic backlit module on one of my Panasonic display eh?

But the Sony ones does better with wider scanning areas, and is capable of sensing the presence of moving objects, to the distance of 10-16 feet for large object, and up to 10 feet on smaller objects. When there’s on one surround, it will shut the display off completely, and turn it back on with sense of movement within its scanning area. The time interval can be set from seven seconds, five minutes, half an hour to one hours, just don’t stay still with those setting, you don’t your TV program to shut down in the middle of playing “24”. I am sure they missed to mention the “disable” button on the auto turn-on feature somewhere, it could be annoying right?

We’re live in Milan today, covering Sony’s latest announcement. In fact, Sony showed off a brand new marketing campaign today that’s intended to demonstrate their latest technology behind their BRAVIA televisions. The tech is called Motionflow 240Hz and in order to show off what the latest in motion picture technology is capable of, Sony resorted to the oldest method of creating motion pictures: the zoetrope.

A zoetrope is a device that uses static images but when spun at high speeds, create the illusion of movement. The Sony BRAVIA-drome feeds off of this 19th century technology to make for a device that is 10 meters across and spins at over 40 kph.

The subject of BRAVIA-drome is soccer, and this acts as the perfect way to show off how Motionflow works. In actually gets rid of jerkiness and shows the ball traveling in the air smoothly. This reproduces the feeling of being there live at the game. The new ‘drome is the subject of a commercial that will be used worldwide. Filmed in Venaria, which is near Turin, Italy, it shows a soccer star within the images in the BRAVIA-drome.

The commercial itself shows the faces of those in the audience standing in awe of this massive device. And it’s no wonder people were impressed. The BRAVIA-drome is capable of reaching speeds of over 50kph, requires two 40-foot trucks to transport it and weighs in at ten tons. It’s believed to be the largest zoetrope ever built!

The Motionflow 240Hz technology helps smooth out the jumpiness experienced on a normal television set. This works by significantly boosting the number of images, thus the frame rate. A “transitional picture” is placed between images in fast-moving parts of video, providing for smooth picture that is more pleasing to the eye.

This transitional picture is actually created by this Motionflow tech. It works by examining the images that precede and follow a particular image–especially during fast moving parts of a sports event or during an action sequence in a movie. All of the quick cuts and fast movements can cause a problem with how the sequence is subsequently viewed. By examining the prior and following image, Motionflow then adds an image in between that can make that car chase–or the movement of a soccer ball, in the case of the new ad campaign–look natural without any noticeable gaps in movement.

It’s really rather impressive and the whole BRAVIA-drome effort shows Sony is serious about promoting their newest technology. Check out our video from the press event below:
