I’d love to have been a fly on the wall at Sony Australia when they came up with this one.  ”Guys, it’s a worldwide recession, we need a promotion to keep people buying the PS3 and BRAVIA HDTVs.  I know some of you want to run a competition and give the darned things away, but I think we’d be far better off firing one against the other and sticking it up on YouTube.”  Hence how we end up with a video of a PS3 being launched at 22 meters per second toward a poor, defenceless flat-panel TV.

Sony have officially unveiled their new BRAVIA HDTVs, the ZX5 series, complete with high-end cleverness such as 240Hz “Flow Motion”, integrated wireless streaming and edge-mounted LED backlighting.  The ZX5 range – which will land in Japan come November – will initially be available in 46- and 52-inch sizes, both supporting 1080p in a deliciously skinny frame.

Sony have announced that, as of fall 2009, Netflix, Demand Media and ON Networks will arrive on their BRAVIA HDTVs.  A standard feature on any upcoming Sony BRAVIA internet video-capable HDTV, and usable on existing sets courtesy of Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video Link module, Netflix users will be able to access their instant queue lists on their TV.

playstation network logoSony are planning to extend the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3, while at the same time “evolving the PS3 into a platform for web services.”  The PSN currently offers games and media content to PS3 owners, but future deployments could see it available on Sony Bravia HDTVs and mobile devices like the PSP and Sony Ericsson handsets.

Coming this summer of 2009, Sony will release a series of Bravia Eco TV in the range 40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch widescreen displays, which utilize a presence sensor-based function and a higher luminous efficiency HCFL light source at deduced size, to cut down power consumption as low as 40%. The same technology, were in fact, being used at current V5 series TV lineup, and the folks at Nikkie were invited to examine its features and effectiveness in dealing with the power saving modes.

We’re live in Milan today, covering Sony’s latest announcement. In fact, Sony showed off a brand new marketing campaign today that’s intended to demonstrate their latest technology behind their BRAVIA televisions. The tech is called Motionflow 240Hz and in order to show off what the latest in motion picture technology is capable of, Sony resorted to the oldest method of creating motion pictures: the zoetrope.
