Hulu $4.99 paywall rumored: Could this pave way to official Boxee support?

Mutterings of premium content continue to sweep across the streaming media space, with Hulu the latest to be tipped as preparing to move some of the more popular shows behind a paywall.  The news - which suggests Hulu are considering asking a $4.99 per month subscription for older episodes of shows like 30 Rock, Modern Family and House - comes after Boxee announced their own plans to launch premium content over the summer.

Boxee have announced that they intend to add payments support to their media center platform, allowing users to purchase pay-per-view and subscription content from the company's media partners.  Expected to roll out over the Summer, the payments system will work in tandem with the existing free content, with media owners able to charge for none, some or all of their offerings.

Boxee Box Tegra 2 confirmed; Boxee Beta goes public

Now that the Boxee Box by D-Link is officially official, and the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset is the same, Boxee can finally confirm that yes, they've used the low-power 1080p-capable Tegra T20 chip in their upcoming media streamer.  According to a new post on the Boxee blog, the dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU means the Boxee Box is capable of Adobe Flash 10.1 decoding, HD streaming and local 1080p playback.

D-Link and Boxee have officially announced their Boxee Box at CES 2010, the set-top box that will deliver streaming media in a more plug-and-play than traditional Boxee installs.  What the press release doesn't mention, however, is the clever new remote they've developed, which has a full QWERTY keyboard for easy text-entry.

D-Link Boxee Box revealed: arrives Q2 2010

It's not just the new Boxee Beta that the company is excited about.  Having confirmed last month that they were working with hardware partners to deliver a pre-built Boxee set-top box, the company has announced that the first unit will be from D-Link.  The D-Link Boxee Box - shown here in render form - is expected to arrive in Q2 2010, and will have integrated WiFi together with an HDMI output.

Boxee Beta announced: faster performance & tweaked GUI

Boxee have announced the new beta of their media center software.  Among the changes include a new homepage, with clearer menu options together with a recommendations pane showing suggestions from Twitter and Facebook, improved handling of files with live searching, and filtering by genre and cost.  The new Boxee beta also combines local and streaming files and organises TV series by episode, while third-party developers can now use OAuth authentication to log into web services.

Hulu have announced a new desktop app, the imaginatively titled Hulu Desktop, which brings "lean-back viewing" to PC and Mac.  The app allows the Hulu catalog to be browsed and titles played, either with a standard keyboard and mouse or with a remote control.  However the news has come as something of a slap in the face to Boxee, who are still forced to use workaround fixes to access Hulu content on their multimedia platform.

Boxee have released an updated version of their eponymous media center software, but the much hoped-for Hulu reintroduction is not part of it.  Instead, the new Boxee adds a software download store called App Box, an RSS reader (which can display Hulu video feeds) and auto-update functionality.  The team has also revealed the results of its latest round of talks with Hulu.
