Boxee Beta announced: faster performance & tweaked GUI

Boxee have announced the new beta of their media center software.  Among the changes include a new homepage, with clearer menu options together with a recommendations pane showing suggestions from Twitter and Facebook, improved handling of files with live searching, and filtering by genre and cost.  The new Boxee beta also combines local and streaming files and organises TV series by episode, while third-party developers can now use OAuth authentication to log into web services. Hulu Desktop app reminds people how good Boxee made it

Hulu have announced a new desktop app, the imaginatively titled Hulu Desktop, which brings "lean-back viewing" to PC and Mac.  The app allows the Hulu catalog to be browsed and titles played, either with a standard keyboard and mouse or with a remote control.  However the news has come as something of a slap in the face to Boxee, who are still forced to use workaround fixes to access Hulu content on their multimedia platform. Boxee gets Linux update: Hulu & App Box, still no Netflix

Another update has seen the Linux version of the Boxee multimedia platform gain Hulu support, together with access to the App Box download system.  Boxee V.0.9.11.5777M also gains a new GUI skin and brings the Linux version better up to date with the OS X version of the app. Read The Full Story

Boxee add App Box, API, Pandora & Hulu-happy browser

Boxee have launched a new version of their open-source media center app, together with an API for developers and a new download service called App Box for third-party extensions.  The company has also confirmed that they are in talks with manufacturers to get Boxee loaded onto games consoles, Blu-ray players and other set-top boxes. Boxee update: Hulu RSS, auto-update & app store

Boxee have released an updated version of their eponymous media center software, but the much hoped-for Hulu reintroduction is not part of it.  Instead, the new Boxee adds a software download store called App Box, an RSS reader (which can display Hulu video feeds) and auto-update functionality.  The team has also revealed the results of its latest round of talks with Hulu. Apple TV v2.3.1 update yanks Boxee

Apple have released a new update for the Apple TV, version 2.3.1, and users have discovered that it unceremoniously dumps the unofficial Boxee plugin from their set-top box.  Boxee is an open-source media player, and by installing it onto the Apple TV the STB is able to play just about any DRM-free multimedia file, rather than simply Apple's own iTunes content (or files specifically compatible with iTunes). Boxee gets Netflix in latest update

Boxee is pretty much brand new, but they're already releasing an update to add new features to the mix. The company's media player software that's currently in an alpha version for Macs and Linux only, just got an update that adds the ability to stream Netflix movies and videos from sites such as the WB network, MTV and offers up photos from the Boston Globe.
