BMW will launch its ConnectedDrive Store, offering apps and services like real-time traffic for download and activation directly from the car's infotainment display, in the US come spring 2015. The system, already available in Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, will be offered across all of BMW's current range in the US, taking advantage of the baked-in cellular connection the cars have to deliver smartphone-free app downloads.

BMW recalls 140k cars over Takata airbags issue

BMW has been swept up into the Takata airbag debacle, announcing that it will recall about 140,000 BMW 3 Series cars in the US. This follows a smaller recall it previously had in certain regions with high humidity levels, something originally believed to be the cause of Takata airbags rupturing with too much force, causing potential injuries and death to drivers. The vehicles being recalled were made from January 2004 through August 2006. This follows recent demands by the NHTSA for a nationwide recall among several auto makers.

Tesla and BMW continue to have discussions around potential collaborations on batteries, charging stations, and lightweight car components, Elon Musk has confirmed, though the EV firm maintains the talks are still "casual" at this stage. "We are talking about whether we can collaborate in battery technology or charging stations," Musk told German press, in addition to suggesting that Tesla was aiming to launch a battery production plant for its EVs like the Model S and the upcoming Model X SUV in Germany within the next five to six years.
