There's a lot of ways for drivers to get entertained now-a-days. Infotainment centers, with the ability to not only give you your GPS-based location, but also play your favorite artists, they are certainly getting far more advanced. But, the systems can be all over the place. Learning a new interface from one car to another, or from your portable media player to your car, for example, and be pretty hectic. The GENIVI Alliance - a nonprofit group focusing on in-vehicle entertainment (IVI) founded by BMW, GM, Intel and others - has decided to adopt MeeGo as the basis of their next release, using the Linux OS for its multimedia, navigation, internet and other abilities, together with its future integration with tablets, smartphones and netbooks. BMW key-card unlocks car & works as contactless payment system

BMW and NXP Semiconducters have announced what they're calling the world's first multi-functional car key. Currently in prototype form, the key features contactless payment, personalized access control and public transport e-ticketing for when you've left your 7-Series in the parking lot. Future functionality could include general shopping, paying for gas, parking fees and road tolls. Mysterious Images of New BMW Devices Released

Some images of mysterious gizmos have been released by BMW that give us a glimpse of their new car-selling strategy. It appears that glossy fingerprint-prone minimalist multimedia tech is the way to go, and BMW is speeding forward with what can only be guessed as some sort of integrated multimedia system for your next expensive upgrade at the dealership. According to the trailer on their site, these gadgets somehow work together to bring you MP3s, DVDs, and CDs, with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, voice command capability, and a 65,000 color LCD. But strangely, no GPS navigation system, which is probably the only distracting gizmo one should have while driving. This “highend” system is slated for release in the middle of this month, but until then, we can only gaze inquisitively at these product shots (more after the jump) of what look like…um…fancy remote controls?
