BMW 1-Series gets Nokia C7 remote-control [Video]

Nokia's C7 proved a respectable business handset when we reviewed it, but then we didn't try remotely-controlling a BMW with the Symbian smartphone. That's just what two engineers from Nokia Asia have apparently managed, taking just twenty days to create the necessary software and remote control hardware to operate a 1-Series' steering, brakes and accelerator, as well as all the regular gadgets inside.

When you're trying to sell a special edition of something, especially something that's already been available to purchase, you generally want to add features to it. Or, perhaps just throw in more accessories or "never before seen" things. But, for Leica, who has released plenty of special edition cameras in the past, the BMW special edition version of the X1 doesn't really do any of the aforementioned things. At least, not enough to warrant an almost $1,000 price increase.

The country has put forward plans to make the dream come true, and have teamed up with the pair of companies to make it happen. The end result, if everything goes to plan, should be a subway car that's near 100% made from recyclable items, and is ready to carry passengers by 2012.

There's a lot of ways for drivers to get entertained now-a-days. A few weeks ago it was Microsoft in your Lexus; now it's MeeGo in your BMW.  The GENIVI Alliance - a nonprofit group focusing on in-vehicle entertainment (IVI) founded by BMW, GM, Intel and others - has decided to adopt MeeGo as the basis of their next release, using the Linux OS for its multimedia, navigation, internet and other abilities, together with its future integration with tablets, smartphones and netbooks.
