Ever find yourself in need of a tiny, wireless speaker? If you listen to media through the speakers on your laptop or smartphone, you probably have at one point or another, and Satechi has a product aimed directly at you. Today it announced that its new Swift Bluetooth Speaker is available, and its got a price that isn’t going to break the bank if you’re trying to rein in the spending.

As you can see from the images, the speaker itself is quite tiny, and with Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities, it can connect to any Bluetooth-enabled device. Obviously, Satechi is targeting smartphone users more than anyone else with this speaker, as it includes a “multi-function button” that you can use to answer calls or initiate voice dialing. If you have an iPhone 4S, you can also use the button to activate Siri, which is a neat little bonus.

The speaker weighs in at 4.3oz, and Satechi claims that it can stream from up to 33 feet away, which should be especially handy for those using it with a smartphone. It’s rechargeable lithium ion battery is capable of providing up to 4 hours of talk time, 3 hours of playback, and 300 hours of stand-by. Not too shabby for something so tiny. To accompany the announcement, Satechi has also released a rather charming 30-second advertisement, which you can check out below.

Sure, it isn’t the most revolutionary thing around, but for $29.99, it sounds like you’re getting a pretty excellent package. Its wireless Bluetooth setup and lightweight design will be appreciated by those who need a portable speaker, and those who own a smartphone will likely benefit in more ways than one by having it around. It’s available now through Satechi’s online store, so if it’s something you’re interested in, have at it.

The headset just passed through the FCC today signaling a launch coming soon.

These days we’re used to seeing carbon fiber film being placed on lots of things for the cosmetic effect, but the Bluetrek Carbon actually uses it as the integral component for its mic stem. The stem is also designed to be super thin much like a stir stick, measuring what looks to be around 2 to 3mm in diameter.

The earpiece itself is just big enough to fit a micro USB port. However they did manage to include an on/off button, in addition to the answer call button and a touch-and-hold volume adjuster. The headset is priced at $70 with a release date yet to be confirmed.

Samsung says that these new notebooks show their commitment to providing the best portability, performance, and an enhanced battery life, all the while putting it together in a nice package.

The NF210 netbook features a 10.1-inch LED backlit, anti-glare display, integrated WiFi, and 2GB of RAM under the hood. Samsung would also like to point out that this is the first Samsung-branded netbook to be powered by an Intel Atom dual-core processor. The netbook also features SRS surround sound, and Bluetooth 3.0. You’ll find 3 USB 2.0 ports, and Samsung says the NF210 features “Fast Start,” which means users will be able to start up the netbook faster than usual. There’s also a 6-cell battery for good measure. Expected retail in India is Rs. 22,900.

Elecom is on a roll with wireless gadgets lately, especially those that take advantage of Bluetooth connectivity. After yesterday’s unveiling of their brand new Bluetooth wireless keyboard, featuring integrated left- and right-click mouse buttons and a trackball, this new wireless mouse seems to be the perfect addition. It’s part of Elecom’s M-BT6BL series, and if you like color options, the new mouse has them.

Of course, we should also point out that, just like the Bluetooth keyboard before it, this new mouse is scheduled to land in Japan well before it launches anywhere else. So, if you’re liking what you see, then you’ll have to make a trip to get your hands on it, at least for now. But, to get your hands on Elecom’s first Bluetooth 3.0 wireless mouse, it may be worth it, right?

Features wise, the mouse measures in at a small 74.3mm x 52.3mm x 33.4mm, and it weighs only 43g without any batteries installed. But, if you need to put batteries in it, you’ll need to find yourself a pair of AAAs. The mouse features 800/1600 DPI resolution, and it will be made available in Japan some time in December. You’ll be able to choose from red, white, or black.

Beyond that, it’s pretty much a facsimile of the original specifications, with UMTS/HSPA, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0, along with a 5-megapixel camera and flash capable of 720p HD video recording. Samsung’s own 1GHz Hummingbird CPU keeps things moving, and there’s a microSD card slot, TV output and access to Samsung’s bada app store.

The Samsung Wave II S8530 is expected to land in Germany in November, and be priced at €429 ($587). If we were feeling cynical, we might wonder whether this incremental update is in fact a way for Samsung to work around much-rumored Super AMOLED panel shortages.

We can’t say we were overwhelmingly convinced with Samsung’s bada smartphone OS back when we reviewed the Wave S8500, the handset’s high-end specs doing most of the wowing, so we’ll be interested to see how a more affordable model fares. Samsung has just outed the Wave 723 (GT-S7320E), apparently intended to further “democritize” the smartphone market, with a 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD display, 5-megapixel camera and dualband UMTS/HSPA.

There’s also Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi b/g/n and A-GPS, together with 90MB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. Unfortunately there isn’t the same high-end A/V codec support as we’ve seen on other recent Samsung handsets; the Wave 723 makes do with MPEG4, H.263 and H.264, eschewing DivX and Xvid.

Still, it’s a more entry-level step into bada ownership, if that’s something you really want, together with the fledgling bada application store. No word on pricing, but Samsung says the Wave 723 will arrive in Germany next month, followed by broader European availability, Asia and Africa.

Well, fancy that. Just after showing you a new Eee USB hard drive, we’ve got Asus showcasing a new, 10-inch netbook with the same branding. If you’re looking for a new netbook, this new Eee PC model may be the next best choice, but then again, some of the features you’ll find in this new model are pretty commonplace within the netbook market.

The Asus Eee PC 1016P is still missing a product page, in its own right, but it is being showcased on Asus’ website now. So, that next logical step will probably happen right around the corner here. However, despite the official page missing, previous reports of the netbook’s existence have the full list of specs already available, and we’ve no reason to think that they’ll change much in the coming weeks. Under the hood you’ll find an Intel Atom N455 CPU, Bluetooth 3.0, a 320GB hard drive, and 2GB of RAM to give you an extra boost in your daily computing needs. It has DDR3 support, and the battery life is clocked at 13 hours on a single charge.

As for the other details, they look like this: Windows 7 Starter, a 10-inch LED-backlit WSVGA screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600, a 0.3MP front-facing camera, stereo speakers, 3 USB 3.0 ports and 1 LAN RJ-45 port. It also comes with a card reader, and the battery is of the 6-cell variety. It will come in black and silver, whenever it officially launches. There’s still no word on that official release date, nor is there a price point that we can reveal to you today.

Acer have officially unveiled their latest netbook, the Acer Aspire One D260, boasting up to 8hrs runtime, Intel’s latest Atom N455 1.66GHz processor (along with the N450 too) and up to 2GB of RAM. The D260 has a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 200-nit display, GMA 3150 graphics and optional quadband 3G/UMTS. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of the rumored Android OS option we heard about back in April, only Windows 7.

There’s also WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0+HS and 10/100 ethernet, together with three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, audio in/out and a multiformat memory card reader. Storage is via either a 160GB or 250GB hard-drive, and there are two batteries: a 3-cell pack good for up to 4hrs or a 6-cell for up to 8hrs.

So, nothing especially dramatic in terms of specs then, so the real judgement will have to wait until we know the price. Unfortunately Acer aren’t saying until the Aspire One D260 drops on July 1st 2010.

Otherwise things are pretty much par for the course, with three USB 2.0 ports, a 10/100 ethernet port, audio in/out and VGA, together with a multiformat memory card reader. The display is a 10.1-inch panel and there looks to be optional 3G and Bluetooth 3.0+HS support along with the standard WiFi.

No word on when the Acer Aspire One 533 will land, but given the specs we can’t imagine Acer holding off for any particular reason. Pricing tba.

Of the new netbook models ASUS unveiled at CeBIT last month, the most interesting has to be the Eee PC 1018P. Toting not only Intel’s latest Pine Trail Atom N455 and N475 processors, the netbook has Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 3.0 connectivity along with the promise of 10hrs runtime. TechInStyle.tv have got their hands on the 1018P, and the brushed aluminum chassis certainly doesn’t let down the high-spec guts.

You can clearly see the bright blue USB 3.0 ports on the side, and they’re right next to a flap-down ethernet port similar to the space-saving design Sony used on their VAIO X. It seems a shame to only VGA rather than HDMI display connectivity, though given the Eee PC 1018P lacks anything like NVIDIA’s Ion GPU it would be wasted anyway.

Back at CeBIT we were told the 1018P would come with integrated 3G, though there’s no word on whether that will be a standard-fit feature. However we do know about there being 1-2GB of RAM, a 250GB to 500GB hard-drive, 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display and WiFi b/g/n together with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (3.0 is optional). No word on pricing at this stage.

There’s also A-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 and WiFi b/g/n, while onboard storage will be either 8GB or 16GB. That can be expanded courtesy of a microSD card slot happy with up to 32GB cards. Connectivity includes quadband GSM and triband (900/1900/2100) UMTS/HSPA.

All in all it’s a particularly well-specified device, and Samsung are obviously looking to take on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and the Google Nexus One with this new flagship. Preloaded apps will include Swype, Layar, a DLNA streaming app and the ThinkFree Office viewer. No word on when it might hit the market, however, beyond “sometime this year”.

Note to Editors:
JK Shin, Keynote Speech “Future of the Smartphone is NOW”

At Samsung’s CTIA keynote address this morning, JK Shin unveiled the Galaxy S and discussed the company’s vision for ‘Democratization of Smartphone’. With an increasingly challenging and dynamic market environment, Samsung is continuing to innovate to stay ahead, looking to smartphones as the core of its strategy. According to industry estimates, global sales of smartphones will double by 2013 and account for one-fourth of all handset sales. With first-time buyers driving half of global sales, it’s clear that the appeal of smartphones is no longer limited to early adopters or even to advanced economies.

JK Shin announced Samsung’s vision “to advance the democratization of the smartphone” and “to make smartphones available for everyone, regardless of cost, need, lifestyle or geographic location.” This strategy points to Samsung’s commitment to deliver devices, applications and services that are relevant for every lifestyle and to empower users around the globe with access to the information and connections that produce valuable user experiences. Mr. Shin also introduced the Smart Life concept and said, “Smart Life is delivering a smartphone experience that is simple, organized and integrated. And Smart Life is flexible and versatile, allowing smartphone users to customize their user experience to fit their own needs.” Based on feedback from U.S. consumers, this philosophy embodies Samsung’s drive to build a new class of smartphones that will maximize user experiences.

Samsung’s very first Bada handset – the Wave (S8500) was announced earlier tonight. The Wave is one of the first handset feature Bluetooth 3.0. The 3.3-inch “Super AMOLED” display with 800×480 resolution doesn’t offer multitouch but instead a brighter, clearer and less reflective thanks to the OnCell technology.
Wave’s expected to release in April but pricing is still to be determined.

Samsung Delivers Brilliant New Smart Phone Experience
with Launch of Samsung Wave

· Full touch Super AMOLED offers the best ever viewing quality on a mobile
· Social Hub brings all your social networks together in one, unified solution
· TouchWiz 3.0 expands Smartphone usability to the next level

February 14th, 2010, Barcelona, Spain – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced the launch of the Samsung Wave (Model: S8500). This is the first mobile handset to be released on Samsung’s new, open mobile platform, Samsung bada, and the cornerstone of the company’s commitment to provide a smartphone for every lifestyle.

The Samsung Wave offers a Super AMOLED 3.3” display that makes the screen truly come alive, a Social Hub to bring you closer to your contacts and connections, and TouchWiz 3.0 for an intuitive and hugely customizable user interface. The Wave’s high-speed CPU ensures swift, smooth application experiences and multi-tasking, making the device an always-on mobile multimedia companion. The Samsung Wave has been built to offer users an unrivalled level of performance, customization and choice in how they connect with their world. The stunning full touch mobile will be available globally from April 2010.

“The Samsung Wave truly demonstrates our commitment to deliver rich, connected and innovative smartphone experiences to everyone,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung Wave sees our platform vision become a reality. For the first time, developers have the freedom to create applications across multiple platforms, for consumption on a huge range of devices. In the Wave, our developer partners can see the ocean of opportunity that is offered by the bada mobile platform and our device technology,” he said.

Super AMOLED – Seeing is believing
With the Samsung Wave, seeing really is believing as it features the world’s first Super AMOLED display; delivering an unrivalled screen experience on a smartphone. The Super AMOLED offers much brighter, clearer, and less reflective AMOLED OnCell display, featuring a high resolution WVGA (800×480 pixels) screen with mDNIe (mobile Digital Natural Image engine) technology. DNIe technology is proven display technology which incorporated to Samsung’s LCD TV and LED TV lineups. With a free viewing angle and super fast response, the Samsung Wave display provides superb image quality for viewing both videos and photos.

Social Hub – my communities at my hand

Social Hub has been designed from the ground up to seamlessly integrate all major portal’s email, IM and SNS services directly into the Samsung Wave. With its TouchWiz 3.0 UI, it provides users easy-flow integrated experience of messaging, managing contacts and viewing calendar events. Social Hub is powered by the amazing push technology to deliver email messages, calendar events and SNS updates in real-time.

TouchWiz 3.0 UI – new and improved

The Samsung Wave provides superior levels of choice to all users via its fully customizable menus and home-page. For those who demand access to their social networking sites at all times, the device allows users to change the layout of the home-page to allow instant access to Twitter, Facebook and a host of other social networking services. For those who love music, the device home-page can be turned into an intuitive media player; while for those who take and share a lot of photos, the home page can be customized to feature favourite images. Users will also benefit from Quick Panel, a way of prioritizing and aggregating applications into one screen for instant access.

With its eye-catchingly brilliant screen, Samsung’s latest TouchWiz 3.0 user interface gives a tactile, intuitive user experience, and includes iconic new features such as motion UI, Smart Unlock and customizable widget screen.

Speed, performance and beauty

The Samsung Wave benefits from a superb 1GHz processor which offers users the best graphic performance available today. Its speed makes the touch screen user interface incredibly responsive and intuitive and, more importantly, means that the 3D and memory-intensive graphic and video performance is unsurpassed.

The Samsung Wave is also one of the most attractive devices with seamless, streamlined body that has no parting or harsh lines. A beautiful and strong tempered glass display perfectly complements and enhances the vividness of the Super AMOLED display. Furthermore, with anti-smudge technology, those greasy thumb prints are a thing of the past.

Multimedia features and connectivity

Multi-codec support for DivX Xvid, MP4 and WMV, and support for virtual 5.1 surround sound delivery transforms the device into a personal entertainment system and HD video (720p) decoding and recording capabilities make the Samsung Wave an outstanding device for capturing, sharing and viewing video.

For the first time in the world, Samsung Wave is incorporated Bluetooth® 3.0 and WiFi 802.11n standard.

Samsung Apps: unlimited expandability

Samsung’s bada platform allows mobile users to simply and easily download an abundance of applications from Samsung Apps, an integrated application store accessible from the device and online. Featuring a wealth of games, navigation, social networking, e-book, health and lifestyle applications, Samsung Apps gives users instant access to a huge choice of mobile experiences.

As expected, the Bluetooth SIG have officially announced the Bluetooth 3.0 + HS standard, which promises connections of up to 24Mbps. That’s possible thanks to the new inclusion of 802.11 support, the same WiFi technology as found in most laptops and cellphones. In addition, power efficiency is also said to be improved thanks to new power controls.

Video demo after the cut

“Think of the connection between Bluetooth technology and 802.11 this way – it’s like a two-man relay: Bluetooth 3.0 puts the team in good position and then passes the baton to the sprinter” Michael Foley, Executive Director, Bluetooth SIG

Bluetooth 3.0 + HS is being pitched as a way to transfer large amounts of data between devices, rather than just the occasional photo or small video. There’s already interest in including it in camcorders and digital cameras, and it’s a fair assumption that the next generation of cellphones and laptops will support the standard.

Those who use Bluetooth headsets will also see an improvement, as Bluetooth 3.0 + HS is also said to boost connection stability even when the phone is moved to a pocket or purse. Atheros, Broadcom and CSR have all signed up to develop chips for the new wireless standard, and products are expected to arrive on the market in 9 to 12 months.

Press Release:

Bluetooth Technology Gets Faster with Bluetooth 3.0

Bluetooth SIG Adds Speed, Bandwidth via 802.11 with Bluetooth 3.0 of the Global Wireless Standard

April 21, 2009 09:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time
TOKYO–(EON: Enhanced Online News)–From its annual All Hands Meeting in Tokyo this week, the Bluetooth SIG formally adopted Bluetooth Core Specification Version 3.0 + High Speed (HS), or Bluetooth 3.0. This latest iteration of the popular short-range wireless technology fulfills the consumers’ need for speed while providing the same wireless Bluetooth experience – faster. Manufacturers of consumer electronics and home entertainment devices can now build their products to send large amounts of video, music and photos between devices wirelessly at speeds consumers expect.

“Think of the connection between Bluetooth technology and 802.11 this way – it’s like a two-man relay: Bluetooth 3.0 puts the team in good position and then passes the baton to the sprinter.”
Bluetooth 3.0 gets its speed from the 802.11 radio protocol. The inclusion of the 802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) provides increased throughput of data transfers at the approximate rate of 24 Mbps. In addition, mobile devices including Bluetooth 3.0 will realize increased power savings due to enhanced power control built in.

“Like Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights, this latest version was ‘born to go fast,’” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “Utilizing the 802.11 radio was a natural choice as it provides efficiencies for both our members and consumers – members get more function out of the two radios they are already including in devices, and consumers with Bluetooth 3.0 + HS products will get faster exchange of information without changing how they connect. We are excited to expand the possibilities of the PAN.”

Added Foley: “Think of the connection between Bluetooth technology and 802.11 this way – it’s like a two-man relay: Bluetooth 3.0 puts the team in good position and then passes the baton to the sprinter.”

This newest version of Bluetooth technology builds on the inherent qualities of the current 2.1 + EDR version, including Simple Secure Pairing and built-in, automatic security. And as with all versions of the Bluetooth specification, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS provides developers, manufacturers and consumers with the benefit of backwards compatibility, enabling both the expansion and enhancement of this technology with every new specification release. Once products reach the market, the easiest way for consumers to learn which devices are compatible with other Bluetooth enabled devices is to visit the Bluetooth Gadget Guide.

Applications

With the availability of Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, consumers can expect to move large data files of videos, music and photos between their own devices and the trusted devices of others, without the need for cables and wires. Some applications consumers will experience include:

Wirelessly bulk synchronize music libraries between PC and music player or phone
Bulk download photos to a printer or PC
Send video files from camera or phone to computer or television

Availability

The Bluetooth SIG’s formal adoption of Bluetooth 3.0 is only the first step in the product lifecycle. News out today from wireless chip manufacturers and Bluetooth SIG member companies Atheros, Broadcom, CSR and Marvell shows the second step – getting silicon solutions to device manufacturers – is already underway. End products for consumers with Bluetooth 3.0 are expected to be in the market in 9 to 12 months.

Technical Specifications

This new specification release includes several major enhancements (learn more about Bluetooth 3.0 technology – link to specification details requires member login):

Generic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP)
802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL)
Generic Test Methodology
Enhanced Power Control
Unicast Connectionless Data
A feature for the headset crowd: More stable and reliable headset experiences will be enabled with Enhanced Power Control which reduces the incidence of disconnects caused by movement such as placing a phone in pocket or purse.

Unicast Connectionless Data provides faster transfer of information at lower power, giving consumers improved responsiveness and better battery life and a visible improvement in performance.

About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology

Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to evolve, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. More than eight new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every working day and more than 19 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. There are over two billion Bluetooth devices in the marketplace and that number climbs daily, making it the only proven wireless choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
