Toshiba have announced the Qosmio X500, their 18.4-inch Full HD desktop-replacement notebook packing an Intel Core-i7 2.8GHz processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 250MNV 1GB graphics.  Set to arrive by the end of October, the Qosmio X500 squeezes in a Blu-ray burner, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, twin 500GB 5,400rpm hard-drives and WiFi b/g/n.

ASUS have outed two new Republic of Gamers notebooks, the G60 and G71X, offering Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors respectively.  The two new laptops each have NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 260M with 1GB of dedicated memory, driving a 16-inch 1,366 x 768 display in the case of the G60, and a 1,920 x 1,200 in the G71X.  Both machines have Blu-ray drives, dual HDDs set up in RAID arrays (640GB total in the G60; 1TB total in the G71X) and both HDMI and eSATA ports.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has confirmed that the company does not see its movie streaming service as remaining exclusively locked to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, and that one day they envisage access from every games console, Blu-ray player and internet-connected TV.  Speaking to Reuters this week, Hastings also suggested that an iPhone Netflix service was “likely to come over time”, though the company’s focus is not yet on mobile.

We’re frankly not convinced that Vigor Gaming Computer’s Stealth NE gaming PC could avoid radar detection while flying low-level bombing missions, but we’ll give the compact desktop credit for using NVIDIA’s Ion GPU in an interesting way.  The Stealth NE packs a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors in with a Zotac Mini-ITX motherboard bearing NVIDIA’s GeForce 9300, all squeezed into a 8.74 x 10.87 x 6.93 inch SFF casing.

sharp BD HP52U blu ray playerSharp have outed their latest Blu-ray player, the BD-HP52U AQUOS, which supports BD Live content, HDMI 1.3 connectivity and streaming media.  The BD-HP52U has x.v. color and supports 1080p 24 playback, as well as Deep Color, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio, and a quick-start mode that promises to have you watching films faster than on rival decks.

Sony has debuted a new Blu-ray player called the BDP-N460 to go along with that $2,000 AV receiver I mentioned a bit ago. The new Blu-ray player offers the capability to stream Internet video to the big screen in the living room.

VUDU has appeared at least a few times here, and it looks like they just couldn’t wait to do it again. And while VUDU isn’t a stranger to LG products, it looks like a particular Blu-Ray player is set to get the On-Demand love right now. The LG BD390 is no longer bound by physical media only, as it will soon be able to reach out to VUDU’s huge digital market, and pull down from more than 2,000 available titles, right there on the spot.

Dell have outed their latest XPS performance desktops, the 8000-series and 9000-series, based on Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 processors, together with pushing their latest CULV notebooks, the Inspiron 14z and 15z, out of the door.  The 8000 and 9000 desktops have optional Blu-ray drives, standard DVD burners, and start from $799.

We’re sure that you remember HD DVDs. They were that other format for watching high definition movies, a couple years back. They put up a good fight, surely, but you have to go where the money is. The result? Blu-Ray pretty much took over the at-home movie watching experience, and forever conquered the high definition war. There had been this sort of bastion of hope though, longed for in one company: Toshiba. But it looks like that’s all gone and done away with now.
