Having been spotted up for sale once before, before being unceremoniously yanked from the virtual shelves a few hours later, Samsung’s 3D-capable Blu ray player, the BD-C6900, is now finally shipping. Announced back in January at CES 2010, the BD-C6900 obviously supports Full HD 1080p content but also includes both wired and WiFi connectivity for streaming media and internet-connected widgets.

There’s also DVD upscaling to 1080p, BD-Live support and 1GB of onboard storage, together with a skinny 39mm-thick design. DLNA support means the BD-C6900 can be used as a media-stream receiver, and there’s support for Dolby Digital TruHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Of course, many people will be looking at the deck for its 3D capabilities, and it’s compatible both with Samsung’s own 3D HDTVs and the general Blu ray 3D standard. The Samsung BD-C6900 is priced at $399.99 from Amazon, and is available now.

3D is making a huge push, hoping that the technology will be widely adopted by everyone sooner than later. Sure, there are still some people out there that refer to 3D as an old, recycled gimmick, but that’s not stopping all the major companies from doing everything they can to try and get it not only into movie theaters around the world, but also into your home. Enter Sony, who have just made available their BDV-E570 Blu-Ray home theater system, which comes with a nice little surprise this summer.

Sony wants to capitalize on this new love for an old (but vastly improved (and still improving)) technology, so they’ve made sure the Blu-Ray Disc player is able to handle the 3D technology, and they’ve got it perfectly planned to gain that capability in tandem with Sony’s release of their BRAVIA 3D TVs. That’s right. If you go with Sony, eventually everything will be in 3D.

Sony is touting that the industry’s first Blu-Ray Disc home theater system is getting “upgraded” to 3D capabilities by the Summer, and we honestly can’t blame them. That’s a great big next step, and we’re glad that Sony isn’t making people pay for a whole new system if they don’t want to. The system itself is able to offer full 1080p playback; along with offer some great Internet streaming sites, such as Netflix, Amazon On-Demand, Slacker Inernet Radio (Pandora is coming in the Spring), Sony Pictures, and Sony Music. There’s also the exclusive iPhone/iPod Touch Blu-Ray Disc remote, which we told you about before. If this is sounding like something you want, head on over to Best Buy right now and get ready to drop about $550. But hey, at least you get 3D in a few months, right? Now, just start saving up for that BRAVIA TV.

Looking to buy a new Blu-ray player, but wanting to wait until the CES 2010 haul arrived on shelves? Well, the shelves may not be particularly well organized at this point, but according to Dave Zatz the newest models from Sony, LG, Panasonic and Samsung have all arrived at his local Best Buy. That’s eight new Blu-ray players, prices kicking off at $180 and all packing network connectivity for streaming.

Dave has given each player a mini-review, and while the Samsung and LG models may look the most visually appealing, it’s the Sony and Panasonic decks that seem to appeal. Sony’s two – the BDP-S470 ($200) and BDP-S370 ($180) – look reasonably cheap, but they’re very slim, pack various added extras (including an iPhone remote-control app) and the S470 will support 3D after a firmware upgrade later in the year.

As for the Panasonic models – the DMP-BD85 ($300) and DMP-BD65 ($180) – they’re the ugliest of the whole lot, but boot up in half a second. That’s admirable when you consider how long first- and second-gen Blu-ray players took. Samsung’s BD-C6500 gets kudos for its understated looks, meanwhile, and LG’s BD590 ($380), BD570 ($280) and BD550 ($180) certainly look great, even if Dave can’t quite see the point of the 250GB HDD in the BD590.

In fact, according to the foundry Intel are working with, a Sandy Life based notebook should be able to watch two Blu-ray films back-to-back on a single charge. That’s impressive battery life, considering we’re not talking about a frugal Atom-style chipset. Of course, we’re also duly sceptical, but Intel have plenty of time before the general 2011 availability tipped for the new chip architecture.

A leaked spreadsheet has tipped LG’s upcoming HDTV range, together with various different A/V components. According to the document – which now looks to have been closed down – the LG LCD and plasma HDTVs the company announced back at CES 2010 will begin to arrive in March and April this year; of most interest, perhaps, is that the company’s 3D LX9500 HDTV will ship in the second week of May.

It’ll also be accompanied by the LG LX6500, a supposedly more affordable mid-range 3D HDTV version. Since a 3D set is no use without the content to enjoy on it, LG’s 3D-capable BD580 Blu-ray deck is expected to arrive in April 2010, along with the active shutter glasses required to view 3D content.

As for the 720p HD Skype video camera accessory, which turns certain LG HDTVs into video VoIP terminals, that’s expected to arrive in May. After that, LG will release some 0.27-inch thick LED-backlit HDTVs, their LEX9 and LEX8 series, which will support 480Hz and be available in up to a whopping 72-inch model starting from mid-to-late June 2010.

Remember how we told you the Sony PS3 was compatible with the Blu-ray Disc Associations finalized 3D specification back in December 2009? If you’ve been wondering when exactly that 3D technology would actually arrive on the console, the answer is sometime this summer. Pocket-lint grabbed John Koller, director of hardware marketing for SCEA, and pestered him into confirming that Sony are currently developing 3D stereoscopic games that are scheduled to arrive alongside the company’s 3D LCD HDTVs over summer 2010.

In fact there will be two updates for the PS3, one enabling 3D gaming and the other for 3D video content. Koller wouldn’t be drawn on specific 3D gaming titles, but apparently at least some will be compatible with the upcoming Sony motion control gaming system, which the exec believes will be a significant combination in future months.

Gateway has given its desktop range a shot of Core i3, i5 and i7 in the arm, with new FX Series gaming machines, SX Series small-form-factors and DX Series multimedia machines all getting Intel’s latest processors. Of the three, the FX models are the most interesting; inside their glossy tower casings there’s up to a 2.8GHz Core i7 processor, ATI Radeon HD5850 1GB graphics and up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, with prices kicking off at $1,299.99.

A 1.5GB HDD is standard, as is a DVD burner, though more expensive models get a Blu ray drive as well. Connectivity includes a USB top panel with ports and a niche for you to store your PMP or cellphone while it’s charging.

As for the other models, the SX Series kicks off at $559.99 with an Intel Core i3 2.93GHz processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory, Intel GMA X4500HD graphics and a 1TB HDD, with connectivity including HDMI for easy hook-up to your HDTV. Finally the DX Series starts at $849.99 with a 3.2GHz Core i5 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GT220 1GB graphics, 8GB of DDR3 memory and a 1TB HDD, together with both DVD and Blu ray drives.

Press Release:

GATEWAY BRINGS ENHANCED DESIGN, BLU-RAY DRIVES, USER FRIENDLY FEATURES AND FASTER PERFORMANCE TO ITS FX, DX AND SX DESKTOP PCs

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 3, 2010 – Gateway today announced the addition of new models and features across its line of gaming, multimedia and small form factor PCs.

The FX Series of affordable gaming PCs gets a redesign that includes a modernized chassis and new lighting accents. The DX line of multimedia PCs and SX small form factor PCs both now include eco-friendly 1TB drives and powerful Intel Core i5 and i3 Processors, respectively. In addition, the FX and DX now include models with Blu-ray drives.

FX Series Desktops – Continuing to Redefine the Mainstream Gaming PC
With a newly designed chassis, Gateway’s value line of gaming PCs continues to break all the rules, managing to pack more performance and features than ever before into a powerful PC that blows the doors off competitively priced systems. The new design maximizes usability and includes numerous additions that enhance the computing experience.

“When it comes to online entertainment, PC gaming and value, Gateway’s FX Series can’t be beat,” said Steve Smith, Gateway desktop product marketing. “While maintaining our price/performance leadership position, the new FX models boast a race car-like design with red accents and lighting, and include several new features that enhance the convenience and use of the PC.”

The new FX design makes it easy to access and use key features, providing simple and quick access to ports and peripherals. The top front of the PC includes high-def headphone and microphone jacks, while an angled media card reader makes it easy to insert, remove and transfer data from cameras and other devices. This can be especially helpful when the PC is placed under a desk.

A handy recessed storage tray on the top of the chassis makes it easy to place cameras, smartphones and MP3 players when downloading files. At the back of this tray, users will find two additional USB ports, which provide convenient connectivity for miscellaneous peripherals. Just behind this recessed area is an enclosed rear compartment which provides a place to store and hide the excess cables from any peripherals placed on the tray.

The control dial for the system’s adjustable lighting effects can also be found on the top front of the unit, as well as the Photo Frame, stand by and backup buttons.

Boasting a 1.5TB drive, FX users will have plenty of room for photos, movies, music libraries and more. Tool-less expansion bays provide additional storage room for growth and backup. A convenient access door on the front of the PC conceals two external hard drive bays, and glides down effortlessly with a slight push on the front latch. Eject buttons for the optical disk drives are also conveniently and seamlessly integrated into the front sides of the PC.

Not to be outdone by its user friendly features, both new models in the FX line feature ATI Radeon HD5850 graphics and the Intel® Core™ i7-860 processor with Turbo Boost Technology for killer performance. The FX6831-03 also boasts a Blu-ray drive and 16GB of DDR3 memory, making it a true gaming solution.

As painfully garish color schemes go, Sony’s new VAIO E series will take some beating. The company has taken a 15.5-inch notebook with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and up to a 500GB hard-drive, and clad it in a variety of hues and finishes; they’ll even sell you a matching (or eye-wateringly contrasting) keyboard skin.

If you can look past the finish, battery life is 3.5hrs and optional upgrades to Core i5 processors, Blu-ray (rather than the standard DVD burner) and Bluetooth are possible. Connectivity includes an eSATA/USB combo, three further USB ports and an HDMI port, and there’s a face-tracking webcam too.

The Sony VAIO E series is expected to begin shipping in February 2010, with prices kicking off at around $799.99. You’ll have to bring your own sense of taste, however.

Press Release:

SONY DELIVERS ENTRY-LEVEL PRICED NOTEBOOKS IN HIP NEW COLORS

Subtle patterns can be found on the lids, of the glossy models, with the palm rest mirroring the color of the PC adding a splash of brightness to the unit.

“Sony is once again bringing innovation to the PC industry,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of the VAIO business group at Sony. “The E Series delivers contemporary-cool designs at mainstream prices, proving consumers no longer have to sacrifice style for affordability.”

The E Series notebook also comes with three unique hardware buttons– WEB, VAIO and ASSIST to get you to where you want to go with a touch of a button.

Quickly access the Internet, without full boot up into Windows®, by simply pressing the WEB button.
A built-in webcam with face-tracking technology and microphone let you video chat with family, friends and colleagues. A third-party internet service provider is required.

Select E Series models pack an Intel® Core™ i5 processor with Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost technologies, delivering the performance needed for multitasking.

All the discussion and demoing at this year’s CES over three-dimensional viewing technology is finally manifest in the form of the Samsung BD-C6900 3D Blu-ray player, which just popped up for preorder on Amazon today….and unceremoniously dropped off the site a few moments ago.

Just this week Samsung announced that they were the first in line to initiate mass production behind 3D displays. Besides the 3D HD player, there was the woodgrained BD-C7500 also at $399.99, and the BD-C6500, which promises a 15-second bootup time, at $299. The entry level and eco-focused BD-C5500 is currently unpriced.

So they’re gone now on Amazon’s site, but will probably be back – will the same pricing also make a return?

Oppo makes some high-quality disc players, but often buyers must stuff also swallow the hefty prices that accompany its products. However, the company has announced the arrival of the BDP-80 Blu-ray player, a much more affordable companion to its highly-reviewed BDP-83 (which has been recently involved and reported here in a Lexicon design scandal).

Oppo provides a comparison chart on its website that allows prospective buyers to see the differences between the new BDP-80 and the BDP-83, but to sum it up, the 80 includes most of the key features of the 83, from DVD-A & SACD playback and Blu-ray Profile 2.0, to 7.1 audio output and the full gamut of audio decoding chips. However, it does have a lower-end video processor, as well as IR I/O and RS-232 ports.

The BDP-80 will sell for $289, which makes it the least expensive universal Blu-ray player to market, besting the $499 BDP-83 by $210 and other models from Denon and Marantz by upwards of $1700-$4200. This should be a solid option to consider for home theater fans or cinephiles looking for fine performance, but on a budget.

Take a look at the guts of these two Blu-ray players; can you spot the difference? If your answer is “no, Chris, I can’t” then pat yourself on the back, since as far as Audioholics can tell, there is no difference. That would be fine, if the Oppo BDP-83 (on the left, and which has an MRSP of $499) hadn’t been used as the donor machine for the Lexicon BD-30 (on the right, and which has an MRSP of $3,500).

In actual fact, it looks like Lexicon have basically taken the BDP-83 and dropped it wholesale into a new chassis of their designing, complete with cut-outs on the underside that match up with the Oppo deck’s vent holes. The milled aluminum front panel apparently sits in front of Oppo’s original buttons, and Lexicon made a new backplate since the BD-30 is a little taller than the BDP-83.

More worryingly, while the cheaper player isn’t THX certified, Lexicon initially claimed their more expensive player was; however Audioholics’ testing showed basically no difference in output (and performance below what THX certification would usually demand). Mention of THX has since been stripped from the Lexicon site (though the front panel of the BD-30 still has the THX logo) and the company insists it has made changes to the donor hardware that justify the price mark-up.

Audioholics have plenty more evidence and internal photos, and they’ve published their comparative test results for bass management, frequency response and distortion (including pointing out what THX certified hardware should be scoring). In the end, they reckon Lexicon picked well out of the potential players to base the BD-30 on – the Oppo is tipped as “the best Universal BD player on the market in its price class” – but they can’t justify the inflated cost.

It used to be that you’d need a day-pass to a professional recording studio if you really wanted to do justice to your Human League tribute album, but these days you can do it all in your bedroom. VIA’s latest – the VIA Envy VT1730 USB 2.0 Audio Controller – takes things to the next level, offering 8 channels of 24-bit/192kHz recording or playback with a single USB 2.0 hookup to your host computer.

In fact, VIA reckon the VT1730 is actually the first “highly-integrated single chip solution” for eight such channels. It’ll mean you can record a band’s worth of instruments at the same time, or output to eight different speakers for a pretty impressive home cinema system. Happily the board also supports the I2S standard for Blu-ray audio, which means 24-bit 192kHz audio tracks on such HD discs will sound as they’re meant to.

Connectivity includes six MIDI ports (three in, three out), sixteen I2S ports (eight in, eight out), three stereo S/PDIF ports (one in, two out) and of course USB 2.0. It looks like we’ll have to wait for an external soundcard manufacturer to pick up the Vinyl Envy VT1730 before we can buy one ourselves, however; no word on when that might happen nor how much we should budget for one, either.

Press Release:

VIA Debuts World’s First USB 2.0 Audio Controller

Ideal for MIDI systems and USB soundcards, the new VIA Vinyl Envy VT1730 USB 2.0 Audio Controller brings studio-level performance to the home audio enthusiast

Taipei, Taiwan, January 14, 2010 – VIA Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of PC and prosumer audio silicon, today unveiled the VIA Vinyl Envy VT1730 USB 2.0 Audio Controller, the industry’s first highly-integrated single chip solution that leverages the broad USB 2.0 bandwidth (480 Mb/s) to deliver uncompromised audio quality.

The VIA Envy VT1730 is an 8-channel, 24-bit/192kHz audio controller specifically designed to achieve cinema-quality audio recording and playback in high fidelity USB and MIDI system applications. Whether it’s using the bandwidth capacity of USB 2.0 to simultaneously support audio streams from a guitar, bass, keyboard and microphone, or delivering true-to-life sound to multiple speakers in a home theatre set-up, the VIA Envy VT1730 offers outstanding audio performance and impressive application flexibility.

Providing a smooth interface between USB, analog and digital audio devices, the VIA Envy VT1730 is ideal for USB sound cards, headphones, audio hubs, recording consoles, and MIDI devices that require the streaming of considerable audio data between a host system and audio I/O system via the USB interface.

“Over 10 years of experience in the audio component industry and extensive knowledge of peripheral interfaces has enabled this technology breakthrough,” said Richard Brown, Vice President of Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “Audio enrichment, through our successful VIA Vinyl Audio line of controllers and codecs, has long been a core element of VIA’s multimedia product focus, and the VIA Envy VT1730 further extends our reach beyond the PC into high-end audio systems.”

Notably, the VIA Envy VT1730 also supports the I²S standard enabling Blu-ray Disc™ audio content protection; solutions without this feature dramatically reduce audio quality to that of a regular CD, with a sampling rate of only 16-bit/48kHz.

For further information on the VIA Vinyl Envy VT1730, please visit the VIA website at:

It’s sometimes a challenge to understand how arguably better technologies often lose out to things that are inferior. We’ve seen it time and time again. The problem is that consumers are often not interested in the “best” technology but are more than satisfied with that which is “good enough”. These days, a good example would be to look at Blu-Ray and how it’s being adopted by consumers.

We’re now well past the point where HD-DVD was vanquished by Blu-Ray, and this year at CES we’re finally seeing lower cost devices and content that’s flowing on a regular basis. Yet, in the long run it may well be Blu-Ray has won a Pyrrhic victory and it may well turn out once again that the best is the enemy of the good. I’m not suggesting Blu-Ray has failed or will fail, but it’s the type of technology that faces exactly this type of challenge from the “good enough”

Let’s go back in time for a bit. At the end of the 2001, there was a major effort to drive consumers beyond the ubiquitous compact disk and drive them to one of two new formats, SACD and DVD Audio. Both were optical disk formats designed to replace the existing CD standard and, at the same time, drive replacement cycles for both hardware and software. In the end, neither format prevailed and despite strong efforts from both sides, consumers remained with the CD as a standard while at the same time embracing the MP3 format for music (along with the iPod and other MP3 players), a format of lesser quality than the CD.

So how does a technology shift and cross the threshold for adoption? The ability to drive consumers to new technology is a difficult task requiring several key things to happen at the same time.

First, there requires broad unified hardware support. In the case of Blu-Ray this didn’t happen soon enough. Vendors were split with no unified standard, and instead created a format war that caused confusion among consumers. This initially held back adoption for consumers who waited for the market to sort itself out.

Second, deep content support is required. Even as Blu-Ray content now flows in some numbers at last, there’s far more new content available on DVD than on Blu-Ray, which also sells at higher price points for the same titles.

Finally, there needs to be a clear and visible consumer value proposition. CDs and DVDs both offered a clear value proposition to consumers. There was a visible difference in the experience that was easily grasped. Both were marked by a shift from analog tape format to disk, which was more reliable and offered novel features such as random access to content. Both offered clear quality differences than what came before and the quality was well above the threshold for just noticeable differences. Consumers still do not see the same value proposition with Blu-Ray, especially when cheap, up-scaling DVD players make their existing content look “good enough”.

Even as consumers still embrace their DVDs, the growth and penetration of broadband is facilitating content to be delivered directly to consumers without the need for any optical disk. Combined with portability and the ability to move content from room to room as well as onto portable devices, the market for downloaded video content continues to grow each day and more of that content is in Hi-Def format.

With pressure coming from DVD on one side and the growth in connected TVs and streaming content, consumers may opt once again for the “good enough” experience and never make the mass market leap to high definition optical disks.

ASUS’ Eee Box EB1501 was already standing out as a potentially decent HTPC, and the company have added another feather in its metaphorical cap by apparently introducing a Blu-ray version. Announced back in October 2009 with Intel’s Atom 330 CPU, NVIDIA Ion graphics and a slot-loading DVD burner, the new Eee Box EB1501-Bo367 with Blu-ray is now showing up with several European online retailers.

As for the rest of the specifications, they look generally unchanged. That means you get 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard-drive, along with WiFi b/g/n and gigabit ethernet. Other connectivity includes four USB 2.0 ports, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, audio in/out, S/PDIF and DVI.

According to one site, initial stock is expected on January 19th, with prices kicking off from €426.44 ($618). That certainly makes it more expensive than a regular nettop, but we’re leaning toward forgiving the EB1601 what with its 1080p HD capabilities and frugal power requirements.

Acer have announced a new range of Aspire notebooks packing Intel’s new Core i3 and i5 Arrandale processors. The 15.6-inch AS5740 and 17.3-inch AS7740 notebooks kick off from $599.99 and have a choice of Core i3-330M 2.13GHz or Core i5-430M 2.26GHz CPUs, optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 or HD 5470 graphics, and optional Blu-ray drives.

Those optional GPUs are enough to tip the Acers into DirectX 11 support, making them potentially capable gaming machines too. Alternatively, when battery life is more important, you can switch to integrated graphics; even so, Acer reckon you’ll see 4hrs runtime at most on the 15.6-inch machine, or 3.5hrs on the 17.3-inch model.

Elsewhere there’s WiFi b/g/n, gigabit ethernet, hard-drives kicking off at 500GB and HDMI. The 17.3-inch AS7740 is also 1080p-ready, and both support Dolby surround sound. Sales begin on January 17th, priced from $599.99 for the AS5470 and from $749.99 for the AS7740.

If you’re looking for a 3D-capable Blu-ray player or Blu-ray equipped home theater system to go with your new Sony HDTV, it should come as little surprise that Sony have a few options on hand. The company has announced three standalone players together with three home theater setups, and they offer such niceties as WiFi (integrated on some models, optional on others) and – using a free Sony app from the Apple App Store – remote control from your iPhone or iPod touch.

The three standalone decks kick off with the Sony BDP-S770, the 3D-ready player, with integrated WiFi and ethernet, IP Content Noise Reduction, HD upscaling, DLNA streaming, Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio support and speedier start-up/disc-loading; it will arrive in Summer 2010. In Spring 2010 you’ll be able to pick up the Sony BDP-S570, which also has integrated WiFi but lacks 3D support, and the Sony BDP-S370 which requires a separate WiFi adapter.

As for the Home Theater Systems, they kick off with the BDV-HZ970W with 1,000W of amplification and wireless communication with the rear stereo speakers, 1080p HD video, WiFi with DLNA streaming and internet video, and DVD upscaling. You can also use the same iPhone/iPod touch remote app. Then there’s the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570, which like the latter standalone players lack 3D support; the E570 also drops WiFi/DLNA support. No word on pricing or availability.

The new Samsung BD-C7500 is truly a sight to behold, one of the most, if not the most beautiful devices on the market. And while beauty is in the eye of the beholder I’m sure Samsung would be hard pressed to find someone who does not share my sentiment. The C7500 is an extremely thin (1.1 inches thick) and elegant unit which can either be wall mounted or laid flat.

Sadly a lot of products which have had so much emphasis put on design fall incredibly short when it comes to performance, thankfully the C7500 does not appear to be one of them. Beneath its stunningly beautiful ebony exterior the C7500 has a lot more to offer. A few of the features are 1080P with no need for up conversion, Wi-Fi and Ethernet for Samsung apps.

There are three other models in this gorgeous and well bred family, the C7500 appears to sit right in the middle of the lineup. The model above, the BD-C6900, has 3D playback support, while the entry-level C5500 draws just 13W when playing a disc and can be outfitted with an optional WiFi dongle. No word yet on pricing or availability.

Like Blu-ray high-definition? Got two eyes? Then you’ll be excited to hear that the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) have finalized their Blu-ray 3D specification, which promises 1080p HD resolution to both eyes. The specification is display-agnostic, so it doesn’t matter if you’re using an LCD or plasma display, or in fact what type of 3D viewing technology you’re employing.

It’s also PS3 compatible, having been specially designed to work within the capabilities of the Sony console. The BDA have picked the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, which is based on the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec which is currently used by Blu-ray players; that means the 3D content will be backward-compatible with existing Blu-ray decks – albeit in 2D, of course – and it’s also relatively storage-light, demanding only 50-percent more space than regular 2D HD footage.

In addition to 3D in the main feature, there’s support for 3D menus and subtitles. The BDA expect the first Blu-ray 3D hardware to arrive on the market in 2010, and will release the full specification shortly.

Press Release:

Blu-ray Disc Association Announces Final 3D Specification

“Blu-ray 3DTM” Expected to Reach Consumers in 2010

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced the finalization and release of the “Blu-ray 3DTM” specification. The specification, which represents the work of the leading Hollywood studios and consumer electronic and computer manufacturers, will enable the home entertainment industry to bring the 3D experience into consumers’ living rooms on Blu-ray Disc, the most capable high definition home entertainment platform.

“Throughout this year, movie goers have shown an overwhelming preference for 3D when presented with the option to see a theatrical release in either 3D or 2D,” said Victor Matsuda, chairman, BDA Global Promotions Committee. “We believe this demand for 3D content will carry over into the home now that we have, in Blu-ray Disc, a medium that can deliver a quality Full HD 3D experience to the living room.”

The “Blu-ray 3D” specification fully leverages the technical advantages of the Blu-ray Disc format to deliver unmatched picture quality as well as uniformity and compatibility across the full range of Blu-ray 3D products, both hardware and software. Notably, the specification allows every Blu-ray 3D player and movie to deliver Full HD 1080p resolution to each eye, thereby maintaining the industry leading image quality to which Blu-ray Disc viewers are accustomed. Moreover, the specification is display agnostic, meaning that Blu-ray 3D products will deliver the 3D image to any compatible 3D display, regardless of whether that display uses LCD, Plasma or other technology and regardless of what 3D technology the display uses to deliver the image to the viewer’s eyes.

“From a technological perspective, it is simply the best available platform for bringing 3D into the home,” said Benn Carr, chairman, BDA 3D Task Force. “The disc capacity and bit rates Blu-ray Disc provides enable us to deliver 3D in Full HD 1080p high definition resolution.”

The Blu-ray 3D specification is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3D. Additionally, the specification supports playback of 2D discs in forthcoming 3D players and can enable 2D playback of Blu-ray 3D discs on the large installed base of Blu-ray Disc players currently in homes around the world.

“In 2009 we saw Blu-ray firmly establish itself as the most rapidly adopted packaged media format ever introduced,” said Matsuda. “We think the broad and rapid acceptance Blu-ray Disc already enjoys with consumers will be a factor in accelerating the uptake of 3D in the home. In the meantime, existing players and libraries can continue to be fully enjoyed as consumers consider extending into 3D home entertainment.”

The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players. The specification also incorporates enhanced graphic features for 3D. These features provide a new experience for users, enabling navigation using 3D graphic menus and displaying 3D subtitles positioned in 3D video.

The completed specification will be available shortly and provides individual manufacturers and content providers with the technical information and guidelines necessary to develop, announce and bring products to market pursuant to their own internal planning cycles and timetables.

About Blu-ray DiscTM

Blu-ray DiscTM is the next-generation optical disc format for high definition audio-video and high-capacity data software applications. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc holds up to 25 gigabytes of data and a double-layer Blu-ray Disc holds up to 50 gigabytes of data.

About the Blu-ray Disc Association

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is responsible for promoting and developing business opportunities for Blu-ray Disc – the next-generation optical disc format for storing high-definition movies, games, photos and other digital content. Yesterday Broadcom announced a new 1080p capable media processor for mobile devices. Broadcom is now unveiling a new single-chip Blu-ray solution called the BCM7632.

The new chip is the first to offer a single die Blu-ray disc chip that supports front-end and back-end video deciding and display technologies. The chip not only supports Blu-ray playback, but also supports Netflix 2.0, Pandora, Vudu, CinemaNow and other services.

The coolest feature of the new chip is that it also supports 3D Blu-ray movies. 3D Blu-ray films will be featured by some large companies at CES next month. The catch is that the 3D Blu-ray specifications are not finalized at this point, but Broadcom says that it expects the BCM7632 to comply with the final specs.

Ah, the humble northbridge; neither as earnest as the processor nor as glamourous as the dedicated video card, it works its subtle charms and waits in vain for recognition. If VIA have their way, though, the northbridge will soon be declared the saviour of the proletariat: the new VIA VN1000 is intended for entry-level all-in-ones, SFF machines and budget desktops, instilling them with DirectX 10.1 support and the ability to play back 1080p Blu-ray content.

There’s also support for DDR3 memory, up to four SATA II hard-drives, a multi-format memory card reader and five PCI card slots, as well as a full twelve USB 2.0 ports. It’ll also play nicely with the more advanced graphics features of Windows 7 and throws in dual channel support for DisplayPort, HDMI, VGA and others.

At its heart beats the VIA Chrome 520 graphics processor, with OpenGL 3.0 and OpenCL 1.0 compatibility, and the company say that, when you pair the VN1000 with their VT8261 southbridge, total power consumption for the two is 12W under load. They’re compatible with VIA’s own Nano, C7, C7-M and Eden procesors, and are available to manufacturers now.

ASRock’s latest NVIDIA Ion toting nettops have appeared for pre-order on Amazon, and based on our very positive experience with the ION 330-BD back in August we’re quite excited about the 1080p-capable systems. The ASRock ION 330-HT and ION 330HT-BD each use a dual-core Atom 330 processor together with the Ion GPU and WiFi b/g/n, but the latter throws in a Blu-ray drive.

Both machines also have 320GB of storage, and 2GB of DDR3 memory. Amazon list them as barebones, but we’re not exactly clear what’s left up to the user to install; it could be the OS, as no software is indicated in either product page.

Going from the ASRock product page, you also get a second, empty 2.5-inch hard-drive bay that you can use to set up a RAID 0 or 1 array, together with a Media Center Edition compatible remote control. Ports include HDMI, VGA, six USB 2.0, S/PDIF and a combo eSATA/USB port. The ASRock ION 330-HT is priced at $458.99 while the ASRock ION 330HT-BD is priced at $588.99; no estimated shipping date is given for either system.

Dell have updated their mobile workstation range of notebooks with the Precision M6500, packing a range of Intel Core i7 quad-core and Core i7 Extreme quad-core processors. There’s also a considerable 17-inch 1920 x 1200 display – with various degrees of LED backlighting – together with up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, space for up to three hard-drives (up to 500GB HDD or 256GB SSD in each bay; various RAID setups available) and a choice of ATI FirePro M7740 1GB, NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M 1GB, or Quadro FX 3800M 1GB graphics.

Meanwhile connectivity includes WiFi (up to a/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1, together with optional UWB and WWAN (HSPA/EVDO Rev.A). There’s also a 6-pin powered FireWire, four USB 2.0, both VGA and DisplayPort, ethernet, audio in/out and eSATA, along with an ExpressCard 54 slot and 8-in-1 card reader. Either DVD or Blu-ray drives can be specified.

As you might imagine, the end result isn’t a small (or slow) system: the Dell Precision M6500 comes in at 15.4 x 11 x 1.35 inches and 8.5lbs. A 9-cell battery is available, though Dell don’t exactly make clear how long you can expect it to last. Pricing is also unknown; the Precision M6500 isn’t yet available to order online.

Dell’s compact desktop, the Inspiron Zino HD, has finally made its way out of the shadows and into your online basket. Teased all the way back in August, the Zino HD might only measure 7.75 x 7.75 x 3.5 inches but Dell have squeezed in up to AMD’s Athlon Neo X2 6850e 1.8GHz processor, up to 1TB of storage, 8GB of RAM and an optional optical drive; you can even have discrete graphics, in the shape of ATI’s Radeon HD 4330.

That makes it a pretty viable general desktop machine, and Dell seemingly have Apple’s Mac mini in their sights. The Zino HD has WiFi b/g or b/g/n along with gigabit ethernet, together with four USB 2.0 ports, two eSATA, an HDMI, 4-in-1 memory card reader, VGA and various audio in/out connectors.

Pricing starts at $229 for the entry level machine with no DVD burner, and rises to $929 if you throw in the fastest CPU, largest possible RAM and hard-drive, and opt for a Blu-ray drive. It’s expected to begin shipping November 26th.

If you’re in the market for a stonkingly fast gaming laptop then your options keep getting better; iBuyPower are the latest company to dip a toe into the Core i7 pool, with their new Battalion 101 W870CU notebook. Inside the hefty chassis there’s a 17.3-inch Full HD 1920 x 1080 LCD, up to 8GB of RAM and a choice of Core i7-720QM, i7-820QM or i7-920XM processors. Graphics are courtesy of NVIDIA’s GTX280 with 1GB of DDR3 memory.

Storage kicks off from a mere 250GB, rising to up to dual 500GB HDDs or a choice of dual SSDs, and there’s also a choice of DVD or Blu-ray optical drives. As you’d expect, there’s gigabit ethernet, WiFi a/g/n, Bluetooth and an eSATA port, along with a fingerprint scanner and Windows 7 Home Premium.

Pricing kicks off at $2,079, though you’re looking at another $200 on top of that for the Core i7-820QM or $745 for the i7-920XM Extreme. Maxed out with SSDs and Blu-ray and you’re looking at something merrily north of $5,000, which seems a lot for a system that will snap your vertebrae should you dare to carry it any significant distance.

When companies like ASUS are reasonably legitimately launching desktop supercomputers, describing your performance PC as a “personal supercomputer” seems like asking for trouble. Still, that’s how Maingear are referring to their latest desktop, the SHIFT, packing as it does a choice of Intel Core i7 processor, stacks of DDR3-1600 memory, Asetek liquid-cooling and a choice of up to six regular hard-drives or twelve SSDs.

They’re all squeezed into a sizeable desktop casing, which Maingear claim to have purposefully left dark, minimal and undecorated. Optical drives include a choice of DVD or Blu-ray and you can specify a Killer NIC Xeno Pro network card if you’re really concerned about ethernet performance.

OS is Windows 7, and Maingear will even throw in a Razer keyboard and mouse. The Maingear SHIFT range starts at $2,199 for the entry-level Core i7 800 series machine, with 8GB of RAM, and rises to $2,599 for the i7 900 series machine with up to 24GB of RAM.

Press Release:

MAINGEAR Unleashes a Paradigm SHIFT in High Performance Computing

“SHIFT” personal supercomputer redefines computing performance, design, and support

System highlights include elegant design, advanced cooling, maximum expandability, and angelic customer support

Union, New Jersey – November 2, 2009 – MAINGEAR Computers, award-winning builders of custom computers for PC gamers and enthusiasts, unveils SHIFT, the everyday supercomputer that will reshape the current landscape of high performance computing. SHIFT rethinks the status quo of the high end PC industry with rigs that often feature an array of plastic, bling, and commoditized components and offers every day supercomputing in a sophisticated design with sublime, elegant lines, unmatched performance, optimal airflow, and limitless upgradeability. By harnessing the power of the graphics processing unit (GPU), the SHIFT can speed up everyday tasks like photo and video editing, transcoding videos for portable media devices, and upscaling standard definition video.

“The SHIFT bucks the trend of plastic, bloated, commodity PCs. It’s a statement of our commitment to performance, reliability, and support.” said Wallace Santos, CEO and Founder of MAINGEAR. “Featuring vertical airflow, all the cooling necessary for today’s high performance, and backed by the best technical support team in the business, MAINGEAR is committed to maintaining our lead in the market. The SHIFT Personal Supercomputer is positioned to take advantage of all the next generation technology in GPU computing to greatly enhance the customer experience.”

Elegant Design – Shift’s aluminum skin provides clean, elegant lines while housing a tank-like steel skeleton. Devoid of unnecessary bling, Shift was crafted to add an element of sophistication and simplicity to any room in the house.

Advanced Cooling – Shift employs a unique approach to cooling with bottom to top airflow, aggressive liquid cooling, and a 90 degree rotation of the motherboard.

Expansion – MAINGEAR’s forward thinking, design includes features including user accessible expansion slots, full eATX motherboard support, full sized 5.25” optical drives, multiple SATA hard drive configurations, and up to 2 2.5” HDD in each 3.5” HDD Drive bay.

Angelic Support – In an industry often characterized by poor customer support, MAINGEAR goes against the grain and offers world class support for each of its systems. Should any issues arise, each SHIFT owner is able to talk directly to the builder that assembled their system and can take advantage of virtual on-site support through an internal remote-desktop setup with privacy guarantees. Additionally, MAINGEAR offers on-site support should the situation warrant it.

“Customer service is paramount at MAINGEAR.” said Chris Morley, CTO. “Angelic Service is our premium blend of pre- and post-sales support including non-commissioned sales, US-based, in house technical support, virtual on-site remote diagnostic technology, and on-site support solutions. We’re delivering the total package.”

MAINGEAR will also be unveiling a version of the SHIFT geared specifically towards creative professionals, video production, audio editing, and CAD before the end of the year. Consumers can purchase the Shift at MAINGEAR’s Web site www.maingear.com or order by phone at (888-MAINGEAR). The base price for the Shift is $2,199 and comes with MAINGEAR’s premium Lifetime Labor and Phone Support with 3 year hardware warranty and is backed by the best in-house support team in the country.
