Rovi Declares Intent to Buy Sonic Solutions

In an announcement late Wednesday, Rovi Corp. has officially made it known that they have every intent in buying Sonic Solutions. In their proposal, the company confirmed that the deal would be worth $720 million in a cash-and-stocks deal. The result of a purchase like this, both companies believe, would be the collected power to change the way digital distribution is handled within the video entertainment market. No great surprise, but Blockbuster has officially announced that it has entered "pre-arranged" Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in an attempt to salvage a viable business from one currently mired in almost $1bn of debt.  Although all roughly 3,000 retail stores across the US will remain open initially, Blockbuster is promising to "evaluate its US store portfolio" and is likely to axe 500-800 locations, according to earlier predictions. Ailing retailer Blockbuster is tipped to be preparing to announce its pre-prepared Chapter 11 bankruptcy today, according to the WSJ.  The company - whose stock has fallen to just $0.06 per share - is yet to publicly confirm its bankruptcy, and is apparently close to finalizing its restructuring plans.  However, investors are said to be "haggling over a few small issues" that could see the announcement pushed to the end of this week or even the beginning of next week. Blockbuster are tipped to be readying for "pre-planned" bankruptcy in mid-September, hoping to use the time for severe financial restructuring and breaking leases on 500-800 of the media rental company's 3,425 bricks & mortar stores.  The news comes from sources close to Blockbuster's negotiations with the six major film studios, speaking the LA Times; Blockbuster - and their "senior debt holders" - have apparently been meeting with the studios to discuss the potential impact and their plans to handle their $920m of debt.
