The long-awaited firmware update for the original Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530 has arrived, and OS 5.0 brings with it the promise of greater stability, new flick-gestures in the Storm's browser, and other usability tweaks.  Early user feedback suggests that the new software makes the Storm a whole lot more usable, with noticeably reduced delay between application changes.

It’s about time we made our way through the rumor mill, and it looks like we’ve got a good one for anyone who’s a fan of BlackBerry, and especially the Storm. Well actually, if you wanted a Storm, hated the first, and were hoping that the second would be better, this might be in your neck of the woods, too. And yes, we’ve heard rumors like this before, and we’ve even seen the Storm 2 on video already, but nothing official has been released regarding its debut date. Well, chalk up another rumor for that September launch, ladies and gentlemen.

Don’t ask how, but CrackBerry have managed to lay their hands on not one but two working BlackBerry Storm 2 prototypes, and seeing as they know we’re all just a little bit interested in the upcoming touchscreen smartphone they’ve shot a demo video.  First-impressions are positive, with an improved SurePress touchscreen and better on-screen typing feel.

According to the Boy Genius Report, RIM’s BlackBerry Storm 2 – the touchscreen follow-up to the original Storm launched back in November - will indeed include WiFi b/g along with EVDO Rev.A and 2100MHz UMTS (for roaming).  Known as the BlackBerry 9550, it will also be joined by the 9520, a version of the Storm 2 for GSM carriers AT&T and Rogers Wireless.

RIM’s BlackBerry Storm 2 may not have been confirmed by the company themselves yet, but that hasn’t stopped the handset showing up in the wild more than once.  Now Engadget have had an opportunity to spend more than a few flighty seconds with the touchscreen follow-up; turns out, RIM have listened to criticism and dumped SurePress, replacing it with a more standard capacitive touchscreen.

The iPhone 3G’s seemingly unstoppable dominance at the top of the US smartphone sales chart has come to an end, with the BlackBerry Curve 83xx-series snatching the number one position in Q1 2009.  Smartphones make up 23-percent of handset sales; Apple and Palm both saw their smartphone share decline by 10-percent each over the course of the quarter, while RIM’s share increased to almost 50-percent.

Somehow putting up with the BlackBerry Storm’s touchscreen foibles and periodic leaked firmware seems a whole lot more manageable when you’ve only paid $99.99 for it upfront.  Amazon US currently have RIM’s first touchscreen smartphone listed for just $99.99, with no pesky rebate involved.

Like it or love it, there are a whole lot of people out there looking at two years with their new BlackBerry Storm, so they may as well have some streaming entertainment to occupy them.  Slacker have announced a version of its free internet radio app for the touchscreen RIM smartphone, complete with 100 expert-programmed Slacker stations, over 10,000 artist stations or umpteen custom stations.  Interestingly, you can listen to music even without a network connection, thanks to Slacker’s station caching.

blackberry storm 4 0 7 99 leakAnother unofficial firmware update for the BlackBerry Storm has leaked, version 4.7.0.99.  The new software is seemingly only for the Storm 9530, however, not the 9500, but brings with it reportedly increased stability and faster applications.

Whether its left you screaming in frustration or cooing in delight, the last thing you want is to see your BlackBerry Storm smashed on the cold, harsh ground.  Happily OtterBox have finally wheeled out one of their sturdy cases for the touchscreen smartphone, and while it won’t make it water-resistant, it will add protection against drops, bumps and dust.
