Blackberry’s celebrity director Alicia Keys tweets with iPhone, blames it on hacker

Blackberry is one of several to sign on a celebrity to help push its platform, having recently announced that Alicia Keys is its new Global Creative Director with the launch of Blackberry 10. All was well for a couple weeks until tweets surfaced under Keys' Twitter account from an iPhone, her previous handset of choice. According to the singer, she was hacked.

Home Depot says no to BlackBerry 10: iPhone a go

When it comes to the business segment, it would seem that no company has more to lose than BlackBerry - as proven this week by stock prices falling at news the Home Depot will soon be switching to iPhone. The yet-unofficial announcement that Home Depot would be dropping their company-wide use of BlackBerry devices for Apple's mobile phone option will have the company formerly known as RIM servicing around 100,000 devices fewer once the full switch is made. It would seem that stocks of BlackBerry dipped down as far as 6 percent in early trading today while the stock appears to be a bit more on the rebound as noon arrives.

BlackBerry 10 has best launch day in history (in Canada)

It's been made official, ladies and gentlemen, the first day BlackBerry 10 devices have been on sale in Canada, they've broken all previous records. Those records are BlackBerry's own, with the BlackBerry Z10 knocking out all previous launch-day records by 50%. This good news comes alongside the company announcing UK sales to be "close to three times" the company's best first-week performance for sales of any one BlackBerry smartphone. Sounds like they're off to a good start!

ABI: Android king of end-of-2013 “1.4 billion smartphone” estimate

This week the folks at ABI have released a study that predicts a massive 1.4 billion smartphones to be in-use by the end of 2013, 798 million of them Android-based. This set of numbers also suggests that Windows Phone will be in around 45 million smartphones while Apple will retain the number 2 spot with 294 million units - iPhones, the lot of them. This study suggests that by the end of this year the world will have 268 million tablets in-use - seem to you like there's a bit of a difference in the way we use "smart" electronics?

It takes a long time to develop an operating system, even when it's a mobile operating system meant to operate with far fewer abilities than a full-powered desktop OS - but that's not where BlackBerry went wrong. The company known as BlackBerry fell apart the moment they announced a new operating system more than a week before they showed it working in the real world.

When BlackBerry held a launch event for its new mobile OS at the end of last month, it unveiled two handsets that will be running it: the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10. While the Z10 is a touchscreen-only phone, the Q10 has a physical keyboard remiscient of the devices that made BlackBerry famous. This week the development team at BlackBerry working with the new mobile OS BlackBerry 10 have confirmed that they'll be updating Android app integration from version 2.3 Gingerbread all the way up to 4.1 Jelly Bean. This Runtime for Android toolset takes what we know about Android app integration in BlackBerry 10 and moves it forward to apps being developed for the newest Android systems rather than Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This Gingerbread version of Android is, if you did not know, a version of Google mobile OS over 2 generations old - it's high time!

This week the folks at BlackBerry have sent out a whopping 12,000 BlackBerry Z10 Red edition smartphones to developers across the world. Packages have been sent this with a note thanking these developers for "taking a leap of faith" in working with BlackBerry before and through the release of BlackBerry 10. This device appears to be exactly the same as the standard BlackBerry Z10 (see our full review here) device save the limited-edition red color casing.
