RIM: BlackBerry 10 developer support on the rise

, Jul 13th 2012 Discuss [0]

Baird Equity Research recently published a report that suggests BlackBerry 10 developers are either leaving the OS for greener pastures (before the OS is even available to consumers, no less) or aren't all that confident that it can achieve long-term success. This is just the latest in a long line of disappointing news for RIM, so naturally the company isn't too thrilled to have this report floating around the internet. Today, RIM developer relations vice president Alec Saunders took to the BlackBerry Developer Blog to dispel the notion that developer intent for BlackBerry 10 is falling. Read The Full Story

RIM CEO: “We own QWERTY market” so we’re chasing full-touch BB10 first

, Jul 10th 2012 Discuss [0]

RIM plans to trim its product line-up and lean heavily on BlackBerry 7 devices as it puts the finishing touches to BlackBerry 10, focusing on BBM connected services to provoke consumer interest. As for the decision to push a full-touchscreen device running the new platform initially, rather than playing to RIM's obvious strengths in devices with keyboards, Heins said that it was an intentional strategy rather than a company gaffe. Speaking during the Q&A session of the RIM shareholders meeting today, Heins was asked what steps the company had taken to avoid security breaches of the sort that impacted Nortel for a decade. RIM facing lawsuits over broken BlackBerry 10 promises

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins may be confident the decision to delay BlackBerry 10 was sound, but the company's shareholders may not be so accommodating, with threats of lawsuits over misrepresentation. Under scrutiny is just how much Heins and the rest of the RIM board knew of the potential for delay while still publicly promising it would arrive in late 2012, the NYT reports, with uncertainty over when, exactly, the decision to change the launch timetable was made. RIM CEO on BlackBerry 10 delay: “I could still see the seams”

RIM chief exec Thorsten Heins has again defended the company's decision to delay BlackBerry 10 devices, saying he was dissatisfied with the remaining flaws in what's intended to be a "seamless environment." RIM recently confirmed that phones running BlackBerry 10 would now arrive in early 2013, rather than late 2012 as previously promised; Heins told The Globe and Mail that "the goal of BlackBerry 10 is to bring some of the best technologies in the world together in a seamless environment" and that he was frustrated by how the company's software engineers hadn't quite achieved that. RIM cash reserves threatened by carrier fee cut demands

RIM's financial struggles to make it through until BlackBerry 10 hits the market early next year are set to increase, with carriers pressuring the Canadian company to slim its monthly server fees. Operators like AT&T and Verizon have each demanded a reduction in the fees RIM charges for subscribers to access BlackBerry servers, Bloomberg reports, something the company is understandably reluctant to do as they account for more than a third of annual revenue. So long, RIM, and thanks for all the phones

, Jun 29th 2012 Discuss [0]

Oh RIM. Where did it all go wrong? The company has been flailing for some time now, but its dismal financials on the latest earnings call paired with the announcement that BlackBerry 10 won’t make an appearance until the first quarter of next year has almost certainly sealed RIM’s fate. It’s not quite the end of the road just yet, but the light at the end of the tunnel is growing dimmer with each passing day.

RIM reports dire Q1 2013: $518m loss and BlackBerry 10 delayed

, Jun 29th 2012 Discuss [0]

RIM‘s Q1 2013 results are out, and it’s dire reading for the BlackBerry maker: a net loss of $518m for the three month period, and the confession that BlackBerry 10 will miss its launch window. Instead, the first device running the new platform is now only expected in the first calendar quarter of 2013, rather than Q4 2012 as previously promised, though that will shrink the period between the initial all-touch handset arriving and a QWERTY device due to drop shortly after. Between then and now, though, there’ll be even more job losses.
