HTC Flyer: Latest victim of tablet sabotage

Perhaps it’s Friday paranoia talking, but it does seem like the US carriers (and retailers, for that matter) want to kill the chances of every tablet other than the iPad. News that the “Scribe” active stylus for the HTC Flyer will be an $80 accessory for the WiFi-only version Best Buy will sell (and, presumably, the HTC EVO View 4G headed to Sprint) has whipped the rug out from under the tablet’s stubby Android feet, making it either a very expensive – $580 for WiFi tablet and pen – proposition or merely a 7-inch slate not even running Honeycomb.

I think that most of us grew up the same way. If someone is stealing from you, and you can stop them without risking your life or the life of your family nearby, you do it. I would also like to think that if we were in a store and saw someone trying to steal that most Americans would step in and thwart the thief. Way back when the iPhone 4 was first unveiled you were supposed to be able to get the smartphone in either white or black colors to suit your tastes. We even got our hands on the white version a bit and it looked pretty cool. That white iPhone 4 became a bit of a myth, as it was never able to come to market thanks to problems with the white paint and getting it to match phones made by different suppliers. Dish Network purchase of Blockbuster Video approved by bankruptcy court

Best Buy didn't call out the iPad by name in their ASUS Eee Pad Transformer promotion earlier this week, but the intended identity of their "generic" comparison tablet wasn't exactly well hidden. An iPad-style slate duct taped to a keyboard, the retailer was pushing ASUS' battery-blessed keyboard dock for the Transformer.
