Toshiba crams WiMax modem inside updated laptops

Toshiba has announced that it will be cramming a WiMax modem inside some of its notebooks and offering them up for sale soon. iPad Stealing Up to 50% of Laptop Sales, According to Best Buy CEO [Update]

With the iPad launching in China, we can safely say that the tablet device from the Cupertino-based Apple is everywhere. And, the sales numbers match that. The success of the iPad has lead companies all over the world to race for the next killer tablet. The iPad killer. We've seen Samsung's recent contender, even compared the two, but it looks like the combination of the Apple logo, with the ease of use in iOS, has lead people all over the world to turn more towards the tablet device, rather than even a laptop. The day started with the Wall Street Journal reporting that the CEO of Best Buy Brian Dun shared that the iPad was cannibalizing Best Buy’s laptop sales by a shocking 50%. They day ended with Samsung announcing that their Galaxy Tab 7 inch slate will be available on all four major wireless carriers here in the US in the coming month’s.

Samsung is the first of what I expect to be many major consumer brands launching tablets with carrier support over the next 6 month’s. Smart phones and soon to be Super Phones may be the fastest growing category in the industry but tablets are certainly the hottest trend I am seeing right now. With the latest comments by Best Buy’s CEO you can see why so many in the industry have their eyes fixed on this space.

Intel AppUp store gets SEGA Mega Drive classics, B&N content and more

Intel's AppUp download store has hit "gold" status and gone live, having first started showing up on netbooks back in January.  The silicon manufacturer listed their new partners in AppUp at IDF 2010 today, including the news that SEGA will be porting Mega Drive classics over and that Barnes & Noble will also be adopting the store. T-Mobile G2 gets $199.99 price tag courtesy of Best Buy

T-Mobile USA were so excited yesterday when they officially announced the T-Mobile G2 that they forgot to specify how much the Android 2.2 Froyo smartphone would be or when exactly it would arrive on shelves.  Happily Best Buy's press release writers have far more common sense; the retailer has confirmed that the G2 is up for preorder sometime today - at $199.99 with a new, two-year agreement - and will begin shipping October 6th. Kindle arrives in Best Buy stores this fall (with on-device registration?)

Best Buy has announced that, as of this fall, they will be offering Amazon's WiFi and 3G Kindle ereaders in stores.  Priced at the same $139 for the WiFi-only Kindle and $189 for its WiFi+3G sibling, they'll be joined by the Kindle DX later in the season. Read The Full Story
