BBM Voice brings WiFi calling to BlackBerry

RIM has released BlackBerry Messenger 7 (BBM 7) complete with BBM Voice support, adding WiFi calling to the popular messaging service. The new app, headed to the BlackBerry App World today, currently works with BlackBerry OS 6 devices and above, and as well as allowing for simple switching between text messages and voice calls, adds several other new features.

BBM for BlackBerry 10 further detailed in new leak

Last month we saw leaked pictures of the BlackBerry Messenger design for BlackBerry 10 leak out thanks to N4BB, and now the site is back with yet more pictures detailing the user interface and keyboard shortcuts that the app will employ. The site notes that BBM is being overhauled by The Astonishing Tribe, with certain features being hidden from view and pulled up with user gestures to save as much onscreen space as possible.

RIM mulls Windows Phone partnership amid squashed BlackBerry

RIM reported a disastrous Q1 2013 financial result in an earnings call yesterday, with the company still resolute in preparing BlackBerry 10 despite yet another delay. RIM also noted how it would be exploring all available avenues, and Reuters is reporting that the company’s board is coming under increasing pressure to sell its software services or partner with Microsoft on Windows Phone.

Cross-platform BBM reportedly scrapped

Rumors in the past have suggested that RIM may port its popular BlackBerry Messenger application to iOS and Android. The Waterloo based smartphone company has been struggling in the market thanks to the meteoric rise of both of those platforms, and the release of a cross-platform BBM could have opened some new revenue streams. The Wall Street Journal reports that any plans RIM had to port BBM have now been scrapped.

Jim Balsillie wanted to open up BBM to rival devices

Ex co-CEO of RIM, Jim Balsillie, was reportedly in talks with various mobile carriers across the world in order to allow rival phones to be able to connect to BlackBerry services. Sources speaking to Reuters say that Balsillie was in talks with AT&T and Verizon in the United States, as well as Vodafone, Telefonica, France Telecom, and Deutsche Telekom in Europe.

BlackBerry BBM integrated with Facebook, Twitter and more

The BlackBerry BBM service will be integrated with Twitter and Facebook, RIM has announced, allowing users of the encrypted IM system to quickly share tweets or Facebook status updates directly from the app. The new social networking integration is part of RIM's enhancement of BBM connected apps set to roll out over the next two weeks, with new versions of BlackBerry Travel, BlackBerry App World and BBM Music all hooking into the service.
