Battlefield lovers rejoice. Electronic Arts and DICE are going to be holding a special event for Battlefield 4 on March 26th at 7:00 p.m. PST. The Battlefield 4 event will take place in San Francisco, California at the 2013 Game Developers Conference. The invitation, received by Gamespot, says, “Please join us to celebrate a new era of Battlefield.” Nothing else was mentioned on EA’s invitation.

So what do we know about Battlefield 4 so far? We know that EA is planning on releasing a beta for Battlefield 4 sometime during Fall. We also know that if you’re one of the players who purchased Medal of Honor: Warfighter (and considering its poor sales figure, there aren’t that many of you), you will instantly have access to Battlefield 4′s beta.

There are also speculations that EA and DICE may announce Battlefield: Bad Company 3 at their Battlefield 4 event. Battlefield: Bad Company 3 was spotted on LinkedIn from a user who “provided video game prototype, design, and demo feedback” on the game back in 2009-2011. Battlefield: Bad Company has done remarkably well in sales in the past, with Bad Company 2 selling around 6 million copies. And EA isn’t blind. It knows that gamers have been anxiously awaiting the announcement of a Bad Company 2 sequel.

The timing sounds about right for EA to announce that next chapter in the Battlefield game line. It had just launched the final DLC in its Battlefield 3 line-up, Battlefield 3: End Game. The DLC became available for PlayStation 3 Battlefield 3 Premium subscribers on March 6th, and Xbox 360/PC premium subscribers on March 12th. The expansion comes with 4 new maps, 2 classic game modes, more vehicles, more assignments, and more achievements. The DLC, combined with the other 4 DLCs should be able to keep Battlefield 3 gamers entertained until Battlefield 4 is officially released.

The DLC is available for Battlefield 3 Premium members on the PlayStation 3 now. Battlefield 3 Premium members on the Xbox 360 and PC will be able to get the download content on March 12.

Battlefield 3 players who aren’t Premium subscribers will be able to get the content on the PlayStation 3 starting March 19 and on the Xbox 360 and PC starting on March 26. The DLC will bring four new maps inspired by the four seasons. The maps include Kiasar Railroad and Operation Riverside. In addition to new maps, the DLC also brings players new vehicles and the return of two classic game modes.

The new vehicles include a fast dirt bike and two AA vehicles. Players will also be able to call on airdrops from troop transports to help turn the tide of the battle. The two classic game modes returning in this DLC include capture the flag and air superiority. Air superiority allows players to engage in massive dogfights in the skies above the battlefield.

The DLC pack includes five new assignments, 16 dogtags, and five new trophies and achievements. EA points out that players who haven’t purchased any of the download content can subscribe to Premium for $49.99 on the PlayStation or PC and get the new End Game pack and all the previous packs. Xbox 360 gamers can pay 4000 Microsoft points for the same deal.

Xfire, one of the most popular PC gaming messaging mediums with over 23 million subscribers and over 250,000 active users per day, has decided to bring something new and game-changing to the industry. Xfire has just launched Battleground, a fully-automated competitive PC gaming platform. Battleground brings competitions and tournaments directly and automatically to its users, allowing them to experience the most entertaining aspects of PC gaming. Not only that, certain competitions and tournaments will offer great prizes to the winners.

Battleground will have three gaming modes, however only one is available at this time. Instant Action mode allows players to jump quickly into a game. During the game, the players will earn “Battle Tokens” from in-game achievements and for finishing tasks listed by Battleground or Xfire. These Battle Tokens are then used for Direct Challenges, to enter Tournaments, or to purchase sweepstakes entries.

Direct Challenges and Tournaments will be available in the future. These will be sponsored events that occur frequently. Players will be able to compete with each other in order to win gaming gear, new games, in-game items, and other goodies from Xfire’s partners. Players can also win “X-Coins”, which is a virtual currency used to challenge other gamers, or compete in direct challenges, for even more prizes. X-Coins can also be purchased using PayPal, VISA, MasterCard, or American Express.

Paul Kim, CEO of Xfire, states, “The most successful games today are ones that have a competitive element, but currently the experience is fragmented and lacks structure.” Battleground was created in order to make competitive gaming more easily-accessible to most gamers. Kim says, “We think Battleground has the potential to redraw the competitive PC gaming landscape.”

Battleground only has a couple of games available at the moment. Right now, players can compete with each other in Call of Duty 4 and Counter-Strike: Source. New titles will be added in the future of course. Currently on the waitlist is BattleField 3, Counter-Strike: GO, Call of Duty 2, World of Tanks, Team Fortress 2, Planetside 2, and District 187. Alongside Battleground, Xfire has also revamped its website and client in celebration of its 10-year anniversary.

With DICE and Electronic Arts supporting Battlefield 3 with DLC for well over a year now, it’s been a pretty great ride for players. All good things must come to an end though, and this steady stream of Battlefield 3 DLC will be wrapping up with the release of the fifth and final pack, End Game. The DLC won’t be out until March 2013, but today we’re getting some rather interesting details that should get Battlefield 3 die-hards excited.

As outlined on the game’s official site, End Game will toss four new maps into the fray. These maps are “designed for high speed combat and action,” and will house three new vehicles that help prop that claim up. It sounds like a couple of these are AA vehicles that will allow you to combat the enemy’s air support from the ground, but players will also have the brand new dirt bike to look forward to.

Other new features include an airship that can be used to support teammates with vehicle drops and the return of Capture the Flag mode. As stated above, there isn’t a specific release date for End Game yet, other than its March 2013 release window. Also unknown is how much the DLC pack will sell for if you don’t have a subscription to Battlefield Premium (or didn’t purchase Battlefield 3 Premium Edition, which includes the base game and downloads of all five DLC packs), but all of the other DLCs have come with a standalone price of $15, so that seems like a safe bet.

Also something worth pointing out: those who are subscribed to Premium will be getting the DLC pack first, and it will likely become available for PS3 Premium users before anyone else. It’ll then become available for everyone else in the weeks following the initial release, so if you’re an Xbox 360 or PC player who didn’t sign up for Premium in one way or another, don’t be surprised if you get it last. Are you ready for Battlefield 3‘s final DLC offering?

EA and DICE have announced something special for fans of the Battlefield franchise. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the original Battlefield 1942, EA and DICE are giving away a free PC download the full version of Battlefield 1942. The game is available exclusively on Origin.com.

EA and DICE are also giving the game away at no cost to celebrate passing 2 million members globally since the launch of Battlefield 3 in June. It’s hard to believe that the original Battlefield 1942 launched 10 years ago. EA says that Battlefield 3 has over 5.2 million active players each month.

EA is also offering up some information on Battlefield 3 since its launch in October of 2011. Since the game launched there have been 95 billion total heals performed in the game. EA says that there have been 4 billion total revives, and 3 billion vehicles destroyed.

Gamers have fired 2 trillion virtual bullets. EA is also talking a bit about the new map packs coming this year for Battlefield 3 Premium. The next map pack is Battlefield 3: Aftermath, which will launch in December for non-Premium players. Aftermath will bring new maps and new weapons, including a crossbow.
