Garmin nuvi battery recall over potential fire risk

Bad news for Garmin today, with the announcement that the PND company is recalling around 1.25m nuvi GPS systems over concerns that third-party batteries may overheat and, potentially, cause fires.  Owners of Garmin nuvi 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number) PNDs should check out the company's special site, punch in the serial number and see if they're affected; if so, the unit will have to be sent back (at no cost, naturally) for battery replacement. Samsung has outed a range of official accessories for their popular Galaxy S smartphone, including both desktop and in-car docks together with portable charger for juicing up a spare battery.  As with docks we've seen for Motorola phones, the Samsung versions recharge the Galaxy S; however Samsung also offer a free Desk Home app in the Android Market that automatically manages daytime/nighttime brightness and provides one-touch access to the Daily Briefing, alarm clock, music, pictures, movie gallery and local weather. There were huge recalls back in 2008 on notebook batteries that were overheating and posed a fire risk. Third-party Android apps causing poor battery life reckons CEO Schmidt

Google have criticised poorly-coded third party applications for disappointing Android smartphone battery life, with Google co-founder Larry Page suggesting that "If you are not getting a day, there is something wrong."  Speaking with company CEO Eric Schmidt at Google Zeitgeist this week, Page responded to questions about future battery tweaks with the observation that "I have noticed there are a few people who have phones where there is software running in the background that just sort of exhausts the battery quickly."
