According to Bloomberg, staff of the US International Trade Commission believe that Barnes & Noble should win the patent-infringement case alleged by Microsoft. The suit claims that the bookseller's Nook e-reader infringes on five of the software giant's patents and seeks to ban import of the e-reader. Microsoft later changed the claim to only three patents.

Barnes & Noble claims against Microsoft apparently tossed out ahead of trial
In November of last year, Barnes & Noble called for a US investigation of Microsoft over the use of Android patents. The call for investigation had to do with patent licensing fees for Android and kicked off shortly after Barnes & Noble entered the Android market with the Nook Tablet. Barnes & Noble decided to go at Microsoft with a patent misuse defense. Barnes & Noble didn't make it to court with that claim, an ITC judge has seemingly thrown those claims out before an evidentiary trial even started.

B&N confirms NOOK business split being explored
Barnes & Noble has confirmed it is exploring splitting off its NOOK ereader/tablet business, investigating whether it could "unlock the value" of the ereader platform by running it as a separate endeavor. Rumored yesterday, such a move would see B&N's publishing business separated from its traditional retail arm. Barnes & Noble looking to sell publishing division
In a turn of events, Bookseller Barnes & Noble is apparently considering selling off its publishing division, Sterling Publishing, revealed by a leak today by the Wall Street Journal. The Journal said that B&N was in a search for possible customers, in hoping to focus more on their Nook product line and its core retail business. The bookshop has been publishing some of its own content since the 1970s, but only recently acquired Sterling in 2003 for approximately $115 million.

7-inch Tablet demand surges as iPad 3 specter looms
Strong sales of 7-inch slates like Barnes & Noble's NOOK Tablet, along with waning Apple orders of 9.7-inch iPad displays, has seen the smaller form-factor pull into the lead in Q4 2011 according to supply chain sources. Barnes & Noble has slammed shut the loophole allowing NOOK Tablet owners to install third-party apps, pushing out a new firmware update - v1.4.1 - that closes the door on all but the retailer's own, approved software. Described as making "minor system enhancements" to the Android-based ereader by B&N itself, the software significantly limits the general usefulness of the NOOK Tablet for those wanting to do more than basic reading and browsing.
