Western Digital's latest attempt to cash in on our general guilt over not backing up files is the My Book Mirror Edition.  Effectively bridging the gap between a traditional standalone USB hard-drive and a full-spec network-attached storage (NAS) device, the Mirror Edition still connects to a single computer via USB but automatically duplicates files across two hard-drives.  Both 1TB and 2TB versions are available. Data backup falls resolutely at the dreary end of the tech-task scale; periodically market researchers release stats showing how few people take the time to safely copy their accumulated files, usually prompting a guilty DVD burning session which never gets repeated. Apple’s Time Capsule, then, was welcomed with excited upon its announcement; with the slick, careful design Apple are renowned for, could they manage to make even backup sexy? To be fair, it’s a pretty huge challenge. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a nicer looking network hard-drive, or one so straightforward to set up, but Time Capsule undoubtedly has its caveats.

Lenovo x61/x60 Tablet PC HDD errors require firmware update

If you’ve booted up your x61 or x60 tablet recently and received and error 2100 boot error, it’s from your hard drive. Apparently there is a new firmware update available for the drives. Mr. Faulkner had to find this out the hard way as he was on the verge of sending his tablet in for repair for the same issue for a second time before he found the fix. If you have received this error, all you have to do is find the proper firmware update, burn the ISO to a disk, insert it and boot to the disc, do the update, and then everything should work fine without erasing all your date. This external hard drive is awesome, and should take all the worry out of a head crash. It can do one touch backups, syncing, and more. My favorite part is its ability to sync your entire hard drive, which I would guess (and hope) is in the form of a disc image since there is a disk that comes with the drive that is bootable that will allow you to restore everything that was on your HDD should something go awry. GE Money Lost Backup Tape with 650,000 Card Holders Information

Personal information belongs to 650,000 US customers of J.C. Penney and up to 100 retailers, including 150,000 social security numbers in a backup tape was reported missing by GE Money. GE Money been trying to locate the backup tape since October but it simply vanished into thin air inside a storage vault owned by Iron Mountain. The authority believed the missing records have not been exploited in any way and insisted the incident is not an act of identity theft but a misplaced tape case. Read The Full Story

Apple Time Capsule NAS storage

This think got its name partly from its intended use, you see currently you have to have a wired, direct-connected hard drive in order to use Time Machine, but with this thing, you can backup wirelessly, or over a network, if you wanted to, and you can backup directly to this drive instead of some other external drive. If this thing works with PC’s as well as Macs, and if it works as just plain old NAS as well as backup storage, than this will by far be my favorite release that was announced today. It’s also the only announcement where the product isn’t available now, in fact, it won’t be available until February. Read The Full Story
