Drobo Mini and 5D revealed: Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 and mSATA SSD

Drobo promised new hardware was imminent and the company has delivered, with two Thunderbolt-toting external storage units, the Drobo 5D and Drobo Mini. Of the two, the Drobo Mini is arguably the most interesting: a 7.3 x 7.1 x 1.8 inch box that squeezes in four 2.5-inch drive bays with a special pop-out loading mechanism and a mSATA SSD bay on the underside that enables the new Drobo Accelerator, a caching system for speeding up overall performance.

“Next-gen” Drobo fast incoming says CEO

Drobo's next-generation storage arrays are "soon-to-be-announced" according to the company's CEO, with possibility of longer standard warranties among hardware and software improvements. Chief exec Tom Buiocchi revealed the fast-nearing refresh in responding to complaints about the existing Drobo, though did not confirm any specific technical information. Shuttle OMNINAS KD20 NAS hands-on

MegaUpload users offered data lifeline with EFF’s MegaRetrieval

MegaUpload users with non-copyright infringing content trapped on the sized file-sharing site's servers could have a lifeline, with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and one of MegaUpload's hosts exploring data rescue possibilities. Frustration at the site's downtime turned to panic last week, when reports from US prosecutors suggested MegaUpload's inability to pay hosting bills would see data deleted. Samsung has taken the wraps off of its latest multimedia-sharing device, the Samsung Optical SMART Hub, an external DVD burner that can share files via WiFi, USB and ethernet connection to your tablet, smartphone, smart TV or computer. Resembling a slightly oversized external drive,at 150 x 198 x 25 mm and 430g, the Optical SMART Hub works alongside a new Android app (with iPhone, Kindle and smart TV apps in the pipeline) for remote access. Pogoplug has launched a cloud storage service, Pogoplug Cloud, offering 5GB of free online storage space and seamlessly integrating with the company's personal cloud storage devices. The new online store - available through the desktop as well as via iOS and Android apps - can be used to stream photos, music and video from, create shared document folders, or act as an automatic backup of photos and video filmed on your smartphone.
