This week we’re taking a look at a brand new entry into the strange side of internet-connected devices with Grace Audio’s Mondo Wi-fi internet radio. This device has a lovely 3.5-inch color display with which you can select from the pre-set applications built in to the device to bring internet radio to your ears from your living room, your office, or wherever else you’ve got Wi-fi. This unit is also connected to over 18,000 free radio stations via the web including such popular choices as iHeartRadio, the BBC, and NPR.

This device has Pandora, Dar.fm, and SiriusXM built in alongside hits like Live365 VIP and Pandora radio. You’ve also got a WeatherBug app so you’ll always know the weather outside your window! This unit has the option of a rechargeable battery (sold separately) or a wall plug and comes with its own remote control – there are also custom apps for both iPhone and Android for controlling the radio from your pocket! The whole unit weighs in at 6 pounds and sits at 3.5 x 9.75 x 5.75 inches so you can toss it in your backpack.

You can also plug the whole speaker in to your MP3 or CD player through its standard RCA to mini cable jack for audio from anywhere. Though this unit has been around for some time (dating back to CES 2011 for some features), it’s just now becoming available for purchase. This beast is available straight from Grace Digital Audio for $179.99 in either white or black.

If you attended CES 2012, you very well may have happened upon this delightful device being carried around by members of the House of Marley: the Bag of Rhythm. This harvest-colored beast is essentially a boom box that works natively with your iPod Touch and iPhone, has an Aux input to connect to essentially any other small media device, and strings over your shoulder to blast beats right up into the atmosphere. This sack and wood-housed set of speakers has the look and materials of a modern day block rocker – and it’s officially on sale today!

Essentially everything about this monster is recycled or recyclable – not that you’d ever want to recycle such a lovely amalgamation – and is made to give you a unique experience as well as vision. The wood you’ve got here is FSC certified Birch, the canvas is durable and will bring you back to your army days, and the plastic throughout the setup is entirely recyclable. The packaging the whole setup comes in is recycled, as well, so you’ll have nothing you need to throw away when you get the device in the mail.

The speakers you see here are both 4.5-inch high-definition woofers, the setup also having two 1-inch tweeters, 32 watts of power and DSP Sound Processing on the whole. That means high quality sound on both the high and the low end. There’s a pocket on the side, two sets of handles for the different ways you might want to carry while you blast, and the whole beast is set to ship this month. If you order one of these mothers up today, you’ll get it by the middle of the month – $349.99 at the House of Marley right now.

One of most powerful looking beat machines you can get for your iPad or iPad 2 is none other than the FingerLabs DM1 Drum Machine – and today it’s updated to its full level of software power. With the iPad you can do just about anything in the beat creation world, including making a beat fantasy with your fingertips – and the DM1 is about to make that a whole lot simpler for you. Inside there’s 64 electronic drum kits. 18 classic vintage drum kits , 20 Acoustic kits, and a total of 26 in-house produced electronic kits, all the sounds you’ll need to make the most intense gallery of sound you’ve ever conjured up.

This 2.0 update will bring you several new features you’ve perhaps been waiting since the inception of this application to try. Though the original version had the ability to create music, sure, it lacked such amazing features as AudioCopy, the ability to reverse a sound clip, and MINI-in. Well what do you know, this update has those features and a whole heck of a lot more, too!

• The Randomizer and The Automation Panel will be bringing you in on a whole new set of creative tools like step by step randomization and much more precise control than ever over your Mixer parameters.

• 16 and 32 Steps per patterns as well as 24 new Drum Kits for the grand total of 64.

• WIST sync technology made by KORG to tie two iPads together, and reversed sounds to flip you on your head.

• AudioCopy on exporting, Colored song patters, and a whole new set of help screens with tips and tricks galore.

• MIDI In. Enough said.

Have a peek at a demonstration of what this update will bring to your beat lab, and pick the app up right this second from the iTunes App Store for a cool $5.99 – or if you’ve got DM1 already, the update is absolutely and totally free!

When you think of earbuds for listening to music and working with audio, you generally don’t expect the kind of quality that thinksound presents here. What we’ve got here is a wooden pair of earbuds by the name of ms01, an entry into thinksound’s monitor series. These in-ear earbuds each feature an acoustically enhanced 8mm high-definition driver, each with passive noise isolation to back them up – and that wood certainly warms up your world from the outside in.

This pair of earbuds is one of several created in collaboration between thinksound CEO and acclaimed Audio Engineer Aaron Fournier and a set of musicians all aiming to create a pair of earbuds with nothing less than a full range of sound and acoustics worthy of their end price. At $99.99 a pop, we’d expect nothing less than the best for our ears constantly bombarded by the evil of lesser sound-blasters. That’s just what thinksound delivers, thankfully, and in the video you’re about to see you’ll hear just that.

What you’re listening to in the back half of the video there is a new single from Jack White, a fellow you might recognize from the White Stripes, this music played from the audio jack of an iPhone 4S through the ms01 phones and the camera I’m using here: a Lumix GF1. So what you’re hearing isn’t exactly what you’ll hear in the end, but you’ll get an OK idea of how lovely the sound does hum. That said, you’ll only really know how excellent these buds sound once you’ve got them on yourself.

These 8mm drivers inside the phones are working at 18Hz to 20kHz frequency response, and when the buds are in your ears you’ve got passive noise isolation working for you so the sound you want to hear is basically all you’ll hear. The first time I tried the ms01 buds out, the music I’d been listening to for months before came through in a while new way, at a whole new level of warmth and depth. These buds are without a doubt the finest set of in-ear earphones I’ve experienced thus far. I’ve not had this quality sound since I first set up my own pair of gigantic speakers to a record player from the 1980′s – there’s just something there that you can’t get anywhere else.

As far as the actual hardware in the buds besides the buds themselves, the whole setup is lightweight, the cords are PVC-free and “tangle resistant,” and you get a pair of Active Lifestyle Ear Hooks to keep these phones in your ears if you’re the type to have your head jamming around on a regular basis. If you’re in the gym quite often, you’ll also be glad to know that these buds are sweat-resistant.

The plug is 3.5mm large and gold-plated, while the buds have four different sets of flexible silicon ear inserts for all your different kinds of holes. You get a cord clip and a cotton carrying pouch as well as a 1 year warranty to keep your brain at ease. As with all thinksound phones, these buds are made with a tiny eco-footprint and “green” in mind, the phones made of real wood taken from renewable sources, the packaging is made of recycled materials, and the packaging is completely bleach-free. There’s no plastic bubbles, PVC, or gigantic packaging here.

A brand new Jambox may be on the horizon, this time twice the size of its predecessor and just as bright for mobile devices. This device is a massively impressive speaker for smartphones in its first iteration, last seen here on SlashGear in a demonstration of Qualcomm technology at CES 2012, of all places. This new Jambox Big is being detailed as a 10.1 x 3.2 x 3.7-inch monster weighing in at 2.7lbs and another 2 hour boost of battery power over the original beattastic tiny speaker.

This new slightly larger version of the speaker has a model number J2011-03-US and has a 60 inch USB cable and a lovely 3.5mm audio jack included. This device has the same 33 foot range as the original and will “fill up any room with unbelievable sound” just as well as the original. We must assume that this version of the speaker will have more power than the original in one way or another aside from battery life, but you never know!

You can check out our several workings with the Jambox in the past including its updates that’ve come down the pipe since its first release. You’ll want to take a look at the future of this product as well: Jambox is a bigtime awesome speaker system from Jawbone and wont be going away any time soon. Big Jambox or Jambox BIG will be made for the home, where the original Jambox is for mobile – let’s get stationary!

Not one whole heck of a lot of news is written or read these days about the iPad Nano, one of the last devices to have been designed and released by Apple since their attention switched to purely iPhone and iPad in that sized market. But what we’ve got here appears very much to be an upgrade to the iPod Nano line, and the folks at Apple.pro have a collection of photos which depict it having a 1.3-megapixel camera! This may seem to the average citizen to be a fool’s errand as the current iPod nano has a clip on the back that would block and camera attempts – but lo! There it is!

It’s not often that you get a leak of an Apple product in photo form, much less do you get so very many photos as these folks have taken. The model you’re looking at here has the same sized body and apparently nearly the same weight as the current 6th generation iPod Nano, but has a 1.3 megapixel camera capable of video and photo embedded in its back. There’s also a hole in the back clip so the camera can see through it – how simple a solution is that?

You’ll remember back in May of 2011 we saw something like this popping up in patent form, with Apple looking to add a camera to their future line right in the place we’re seeing one appear now on this Nano. This model obviously isn’t ready for production, but word has it that it’ll be released sometime hopefully inside the year. At the moment it appears that the camera sensor still needs to be modified as MIC Gadget notes that it takes slightly overexposed photos. We’re sure it’ll be just lovely by the time it’s actually released.

One of the most famous musicians of all time, Neil Young, spoke this week with Peter Kafka and Walt Mossberg of AllThingsD about the future of digital music, and how he’d be continuing Steve Jobs legacy in pioneering for it. A device which allows you to download music with the highest possible resolution is what Young aims to create. This device will allow ultra high-fidelity audio downloads, and because of Young’s talks with Jobs on the matter before he died, Young wasted no time invoking his name to spread the word about it.

Being a pioneer of music in the digital realm was what Young hoped to let us all know he’d be carrying on via Jobs spirit. The first and probably largest hurdle for this particular device right out of the box (or before the box exists, rather), is the idea that each song will be taking 30 minutes to download due to its gigantic size. In addition to bringing high-fidelity back to the world of music, as he sees it, Young hopes to do so while he makes legally downloaded music as convenient as possible.

In response to concerns that a much longer download time would lead to inconvenience and therefor a less likely download in the end, Young disagreed, saying:

“While you’re sleeping, your device is working for you.” – Young

In regards to how and why he came to speak of Jobs for this device, he noted that he’d been speaking with Jobs about the project for some time now, but that his death shut down development of the project pretty much completely.

“Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music, but when he went home he listened to vinyl. I have to believe if he lived long enough he would have tried to do what I’m trying to do.” – Young

Young spoke also about Piracy and the state of the record company, saying that he liked his own company, but that the industry that exists today might be going away sooner than later.

“I look at Internet as the new radio and radio as gone. Piracy is the new radio; it’s how music gets around. … What I like about record companies is that they present and nurture artists. That doesn’t exist on iTunes, it doesn’t exist on Amazon. That’s what a record company does, and that’s why I like my record company. People look at record companies like they’re obsolete, but there’s a lot of soul in there — a lot of people who care about music, and that’s very important.” – Young

We hope for music’s sake that Young can make something happen in the digital realm other than big business attempting to cut down on piracy. The way to the future is to fight the absolutely free downloads that exist right this minute widely, and if a new device which brings ultra-high-fidelity downloads after 30 minutes a song can do it, so be it!

There’s a brand new studio-grade condenser microphone in town for both USB and iPad, and it comes from Blue Microphones. This mic goes by the name Spark Digital and is able to produce darn-near completely excellent sounds with a the same amount of high-quality craftsmanship that went into the company’s other excellent comparable mic, the Spark XLR. What this Spark Digital unit does is take the same studio-grade condenser capsule plus hand-tuned components and sets you up for whatever you want to record – be it a podcast, music, location recording and more!

In this device you’ve got built-in focus control, this offering you two different sonic options with the tap of a physical button. A lovely blue light up front of the device lets you know when you’re rolling, and an adjustable desk stand and built-in shockmount allows you to get the grade audio you want wherever you may roam. You get y-cables for each platform you want to work with as well as a headphone jack so you can listen in on what exactly you’ll be recording as the device records in real-time.

You’ve got a noise level of 10 dB (A-weighted), sound to noise ratio of 84 dB, and frequency response of 26Hz to 20kHz. You can use your iPad or iPad 2′s own Apple 30-pin connector to hook this device up or any USB 2.0+ cord straight to your laptop. You get a sensitivity rating of 28 mV/Pa, SPL handling range of 65-128 dBA, and the whole thing comes in a lovely blue and silver color combination. This device is not yet priced or dated, but it IS being shown off this week at MacWorld | iWorld 2012, so stay tuned!

If you are using Google Music Manager, you know that it is easy, even if time consuming, to upload all your tracks to the cloud. The thing was that once uploaded if you wanted to download those songs back to another device, like a new computer or mobile, you were only able to do that one track at a time. That was tedious in the extreme.

Google has updated the Music Manager system and it now allows you to grab all your tracks at one time. That includes the ability to download tracks that you purchased on the Android Market. This is a nice new feature for sure. Being able to download all of your tracks at once will round out the features list with something that many have wanted since launch.

I like that this service will protect all the tunes I have collected over the years too. If you get a new tablet or smartphone, you can download the files to it. If your computer crashes, you still have all your music too. If you aren’t using this already, it might be time to check it out.

There’s nothing quite a pair of limited edition headphones with interchangeable metal plates on the outsides to get your engine revved up for DJing, gaming, and listening to some death metal on a Sunday afternoon – and V-MODA knows it. What we’ve got here is a the V-MODA Limited Edition Crossfade LP2 model set of over-ear headphones and a full-on review to let you know how seriously excellent they truly are. What you’ve got here is the sound quality of the original Crossfade LP covered with a whole new level of quality in a fine package — the originals have been used by everyone from Deadmau5 and Will.I.Am up to kings like Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto.

There’s one massive list of strange customers that wear the original LP model customized to their liking – Paris Hilton, Gio Conzales, NERVO, and Lindsay Lohan to name a few. And though celebrity names like Kobe Bryant wont do one whole heck of a lot for audiophiles when it comes to actual audio quality, you can bet that this team of manufacturers isnt going anywhere any time soon. And I’m here to tell you right now: if it’s good enough for Paul Oakenfold, it’s good enough for me.

Unboxing

So we’ve got a pair of $199 headphones here in a box that you’ve got to cut a ribbon to get into. The box itself is impressive enough what with cardboard around it that’s thicker than the jacket of a hardcover book, then the top has a button hinge and a snakeskin strap (fake, we hope) that keeps the contents beyond safe in their travels to the specialty shops. Inside you’ll find padding around a monster shell which contains the headphones and the mass of cords and plugs that come with it.

Package Contents

Inside the shell are the headphones themselves, two detachable cables with 24k gold-plated plugs: both of them fabric, 3.5mm jacks, and universally compatible with all headphone jack-having devices. One is is a classic cable with no added features along it, the other has a 3-button remote control able to work with Apple products including iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Also inside is a converter plug for plugging these same cables into your larger amplifier, and all of these items are held down with a couple of strap-heavy removable panels that you can use (or not use) inside your shell – one also has a belt clip so you can attach your goods to your side when the shell is too big to bring with you on the go.

Military Grade Construction

The shell is a hard exoskeleton carrying case that’s black-on-black printed and ribbed on the outside surrounded by a red and black zipper and embroidered in red with the V-Moda logo at the top. Inside is a lovely bright red padded container custom molded for your V-MODA Limited Edition Crossfade LP2s. Great for tossing in your backpack for long trips on airplanes or short trips to the recording studio. Don’t worry too much about damage, on the other hand, because with these phones you’ve got an Immortal Life Program – this allowing you a 50% off lifetime discount if you’ve accidentally smashed the crap out of your phones and want to pick up a new pair – cheap!

For the phones themselves, you’ve got a business that’s ready and willing to help you get the best fit and feel the most awesome when you’re using your headset on the regular. Get a taste of trueHERTZ to see what I mean. As far as how hardcore the equipment is, Military-Grade durability should keep you sleeping at night:

The Crossfade LP2 is tested under strict MIL-STD-810G military testing and V-MODA’s even tougher VMQA guidelines:

• Kevlar® reinforced detachable cables and 45-degree plug strain relief can each bend over 1 million times, over 100x industry standards
• Survives 70+ drops on concrete from 6 feet, approximately 3x the industry standard
• Headband can bend 10+ times flat, not break and retain its memory and shape
• Virtually inaudible sound variances across the spectrum of less than 2dB from unit to unit versus 10-30dB+ of inferior products
• MIL-STD-810G environmental tests including high and low temperatures, humidity, salt spray and UV exposure

Sound

As for sound – and I know you’ve been waiting for this after all that talk about every other possible aspect of these phones – you’ve got what V-Moda calls Live Play Sound. It’s a patent-pending “biggest-in-class” set of 50mm Dual-Diaphragm Drivers and V-PORT 3D staging. This setup, they say, is able to recreate the sound of multiple drivers at the same time as it sticks to the consistency of a single quality driver. The Crossfade LP2 phones are fine-tuned with a 31-band EQ, this keeping your eardrums in tact whilst delivering a wide range of sounds with high quality power.

Wrap-Up

And indeed that is what they do. If you were looking for assurance from your humble narrator here that these headphones sound fabulous – they certainly attain that level of approval from me. These are without a doubt the finest set of over-ear headphones I’ve tested at this point for the price point they set at, and are currently my day-to-day go-to pair for everyday listening as well as listening out in the wild – read: at coffee shops and at the library.

For DJ situations, again, I’ll trust the tests of the masters listed above working with the model that came before this one, essentially the same in build and quality. What this set offers is a bump above the original LP model, and without a doubt they are worth the cash you toss down on them at $199.

Mackie Designs, a company that has for years been offering some of the highest-end audio mixers in the industry, has introduced a new 16-channel mixer that relies on the power of the iPad. If you believe the literature, it will “redefine” the mixing medium. The company is showing off this powerful audiophile dream at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show in Anaheim, CA.

The Mackie DL1608 uses the standard high-end components that you would expect from a hardware component, but when it comes to software, it is all about the iPad. Mackie is taking full advantage of the touch-screen capabilities and the ability to add plug-ins as needed. And it also plays nice with all the iPad’s wireless functionality.

Oh, and if that’s not enough for you, the company says it supports up to 10 iPads mixing simultaneously. Now that’s a YouTube moment waiting to happen. In an official video teasing the new gadget, the price is unveiled at $999. It should be available for sale in May or June. Check out the video below, if you don’t mind a little trippiness:

If one small synthesizer with massive power wasn’t enough for you today, try on another with the Mood MiniTaur, fully ready to take on classic sounds with a brand new set of modern technology bits for an ultimate combination of beattastic evolution! This new analog bass synthesizer goes by the name Moog MiniTaur and is the very first instrument in the Taurus family that does not need or include foot pedals. The entire unit weighs in at less than 3 pounds and has dimensions measuring in at less than a piece of paper at 8.5-inches by 5.25-inches – hook it up to your MIDI controller or computer and play away!

This device has no mass of odd controls, no confusing set of clicks and switches to speak of, instead only the basics and a set of value-added controls that are ultra easy to work with are included. You’ll be getting all the “growl, snarl, and low end” you’d be getting with any device from the Taurus family of bass synthesizers, only here in a small package that’s rugged enough to work with you anywhere! Have a peek at a highlight video to get you salivating:

Then get a load of these specifications, each of them better than the last and all included in the out-of-box experience you get with this 2012 model that’ll ring in at $679. This little beast will be coming out in the spring and will have you dialing in in no time flat.

• One knob per function interface for tweaking and creating new sounds on the fly. It also makes live performance a blast.
• Two oscillators with Sawtooth (Original Taurus) and Square wave-shapes for each VCO. Recreate sounds of the original Taurus with sawtooth waves, or create new sounds with square waves or a combination of both.
• 2 Mixer VCAs for VCO levels control of Oscillators 1 and 2.
• Moog Ladder Filter with adjustable resonance delivers classic Taurus 1 and 3 bass and boom.
•Two Minimoog style ADSR Envelope Generators for modulating VCF and VCA. The Decay and Release segments are controlled by the Decay knob, while the Release segment is enabled or disabled via Release On/Off switch.
• Midi-syncable LFO with Controls for Rate, VCO LFO Amount, and VCF LFO Amount
• DIN MIDI and MIDI over USB offer complete control of the Minitaur’s sound engine.
• Analog Control inputs for Pitch, Filter, Volume and Gate. Use an EP2 or CV to connect and control MInitaur with everything from Modulars to Moogerfoogers.
• External audio input for processing external audio through the Mixer and Filter section of Minitaur.
• Headphone output with 1/8″ connection.
• Compact rugged steel chassis that is built like a tank.

Then have a bonus in-depth look at the device as presented by Moog, the name you trust in modifying your sounds until they sound like they’re from a different dimension:

There’s a brand new Arturia synthesizer in town, and with it’s relatively small form factor and utterly gigantic amount of features built-in, it’ll be near impossible for those in the industry in a position to want one not to need one. This little beast is small enough to fit in your backpack, has enough dials and switches to satisfy event the most insane tweaker of beats, and will ring in at $549 when the time comes. Have a peek at not one, but two videos on the device as well as the massive amount of features it’s got in one big list.

What Arturia is bringing to the table here is a still completely pure analog machine that brings multi-wave oscillations with a “huge sounding” classic multi-mode filter. You can use this in your home or on the stage just as mightily, modulation being the key to your ultimate blast of sound and energy. You’ve got connectivity along USB, MIDI, and CV, and all of it’s inside a cool metal enclosure for the full package effect. Have a peek at the first intense ad spot here:

Then have a peek at the massive amount of features they’re listing on this device, again small enough to fit in your rucksack for quick movements:

My single biggest pet peeve of laptop and integrated sound on computers in general is the lack of bass. Often, the sound is so low even at full blast you can forget watching a movie or listening from across the room. That leads many people to look for quality external speakers. JLab has a new speaker that looks interesting for your notebook or AIO. The speaker is the B-Flex X-Bass, and it plugs in using a USB port.

The speaker is compact, and one of the more interesting things is that rather than using the typical floppy USB cable, this thing has an arm that is rigid and flexible. That means you can plug it and then adjust it to the angle you want. Inside the single enclosure is a pair of speakers for stereo sound.

The speaker has good bass apparently, and overall sound is nice. This looks like a nice alternative to a pair of speakers sitting on the desk if you have a USB hub on your desk. If you want to get some bass in your games and movies this might be the ticket. The caveat is that the speakers apparently lack in the mid-range focusing instead on highs and lows.

Wireless speakers are fantastic for hooking to your notebook or smartphone to improve the quality of your music and sound from your movies without cables. Bluetooth is especially helpful when on the road or outside too. Qmadix has a new set of Bluetooth speakers to make your audio sound better and to allow you to make hands-free calls.

The speakers are called the iharmonix Q-i-sound Wireless Bluetooth Speakers, and they are compact and lightweight. The speakers have a full duplex microphone for two way wireless calls using your mobile phone. Inside the speakers is a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery for use outside, and on the go away from outlets.

The battery is good for up to eight hours of audio playback and up to 240 hours on standby. A full recharge the battery takes 3.5 hours. The speakers have a 33-foot range from the device they are paired with and the left and right speakers can be separated by 15-feet and still work. These will ship on April 2 for $139.99.

There’s not a whole lot of devices out there at this point that the group known as Crystal Rocked have not bumped up an ultimate over-the-top level of glitz, and both Beats by Dre and Street by 50 have been caught on the radar and pushed through the crystal machine by the masters. What you’ll get with the Beats by Dre set of audio blasters is the “Mixr” model tricked out in 2750 individual Swarovski Crystals. What you’ll get with the Street by 50 headphones is two shades of Swarovski Crystals which they’ve declined to number.

What on earth you’d be thinking when you pick these up unless you’re one of the people involved in the company behind the two, one simply cannot guess. Crystal Rocked’s claim to fame on the Street by 50 model is that they’re the first group on the planet to have gotten sets of the headphones in for customization specifically, while the Dre headphones they’ve simply gone nuts on without any special bonus. You will notice, if you step back for a moment and see the craftsmanship inherent, that everything the folks at Crystal Rocked have touched here has nothing less that a perfectly fine quality in a big way.

Each crystal has been placed with care, and each device has had its design poured over and perfected. Notice how there’s a perfect amount of crystals placed in the logos, for example. This perfection doesn’t come cheap, of course, with the Street by 50 models chiming in at £580.00, that being something like $900 USD, while the Beats will be costing you a cool £549.00, that close enough $900 USD once again to make your nose bleed. Then there’s the older models, too – that’s right! This isn’t the first time a pair of Beats by Dre have been tricked out with crystals by this crew.

Then there’s a pair of Sennheisers in there, some Audio Technica headphones, and some Sony MDR over-ears as well. There’s even a pair of Beats in-ear earbuds! You can crystalize anything, folks, go for it!

There’s one whole heck of a lot of iPod opponents out there these days, but not exactly the same amount of contenders in the headphone amplifier world. What we’ve got here is the announcement for the FiiO E17, made to satisfy, complete with a hardcore body and all the features you audiophiles will love. This device also goes by the name Alpen and is made to work as a headphone amplifier and a USB sound card for ultimate cut-down excellence. You’ve got a two-color OLED display, brushed metal housing, and two parallel 3.5mm headphone outputs, right out of the box.

This device also has a S/PDIF input, a line input, and for power and connections you’ve got FiiO’s own proprietary 18-pin port. This port works with FiiO’s L7 dock and E9 desktop amp, but there’s also a standard USB input so you’re not limited in any way. This device is made for you audio maniacs, mind you, with 24/96 over USB and 24/192 over S/PDIF, sounding just fantastic, we can imagine.

You can change the firmware also if you’re not totally satisfied with the sound right away, you able to change bass, treble, gain level, and believe it or not, balance and pan. As the folks at Anythingbutipod say, they’re glad the audio balance feature remains in-tact, and they having looked at the original E7, the smaller version of this FiiO machine, are glad this new device is out like a whip. This device will be released soon at something like $150 USD.

The project known as Years is one by Bartholomaus Traubeck in which a record player has been modified to shine light and receive back signals from slices of trees. What the player receives from the bounced-back light is no less than bits of information translated from the rings made through the tree as it grew from a tiny sapling. In this way, the tragedy that is the fact that the tree had to die in order to tell its story is made quite apparent to the viewer and the listener.

This project has no future plans to become a mass-made or distributed product, but in that the video you’re seeing is made so well what you’ll not possibly miss the point, it’s made wonderful from start to finish. As the tree’s years rings are analyzed for their strength, says the creator, so too are they analyzed for their thickness and rate of growth, and turned into a song that describes it all. Have a peek a the manifesto for this project here:

A tree’s year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently.

This project is made up of a modified turntable, a camera, acrylic glass, vvvv (a multipurpose programmable toolkit), veneer, and of course a computer. The whole thing rings in at 90x50x50 cm and again, there is only one. The artist worked with or would otherwise like to thank Land Salzburg, Schmiede, Pro-ject Audio, Karla Spiluttini, Ivo Francx, vvvv, and Rohol. Get your tissues out, lovers of nature, this is going to get messy for your eyeballs.

A company called Alesis has unveiled three new MIDI keyboard controllers for people that like to make music with their computers. The controllers were all unveiled at NAMM going on in California right now. Surprisingly, unlike most of the gear, we have talked about from the show, these don’t integrate the iPad.

All the USB controllers connect directly to a Mac, PC or iOS device with the correct adapter. The Q61 has 61-notes and will work with just about any software and hardware device. The device has velocity sensitive keys and a five-octave range and can be used at home or on stage. The QX25 is a 25-note offering, and the QX61 has 61-notes.

Both have pads for drumbeats; have filter knobs and volume adjustments. The keys are also velocity sensitive. All three of the keyboards will be available in Q2. Pricing is $149 for the Q61, $199 for the QX61, and $99 for the QX25.

Sony has added a new device to its Walkman range called the B170. This new Walkman is small and compact with a fast charging battery for playback on the go. The device has an integrated USB connector under a cap on the player and looks a bit like a flash drive. The USB connector can be used to directly connect the player to your computer or stereo with no wires needed.

The B170 has a bass boost button that deepens the low-end bass of your tunes so you can enjoy the bass and feel it. The coolest feature of the player for me is that when it runs out of power, and you are in a hurry; a 3-minute charge will get you 90 minutes of playback. On a full charge, the battery inside the B170 is good for 18 hours of playback.

A clip on the back of the player will keep the player on your belt or bag, and the player comes in several colors. Each player has a color matched LED that flashes in time to the music. Once plugged into a computer, music can be dragged to the player for loading. Sony also made the player to serve as a voice recorder as well. Zappin search tech is able to go through your library of tunes and gives you a short clip of each; a press of the Zap button gets you the whole tune.

There’s been no lack of musical instruments being announced this week at the 2012 edition of NAMM pops up on the circuit, Numark bringing one fantastically amazing looking DJ station to the scene complete with iPad integration. This device was showed off at the Media Preview Day for NAMM and features a gigantic slot right in the center where your iPad or iPad 2 fits in nicely, controlling the whole show. You’re meant to use this station with the Algoriddim djay app which we’ve also, lucky you, taken a hands-on look at last year. This massive station is made to take that experience to a whole new level.

The Numark IDJ station has nudge/scratch jogwheels, buttons for looping, pitch controls, and the whole shebang besides. You’ve got volume knobs all around, buttons for the programming, and full integration with the already diverse djay app. This unit is made for consumers mainly, but certainly has nothing large holding it back from being used in a professional party environment.

This unit is made of both a brushed alminum and semitransparent plastic so lighted controls can brighten up your world on the fly. Capacitive touch-activated platters work with Hot Cues and retro-styled aluminum bits across the board for a powerful experience for everyone from beginners to veteran musicians. This device has a dedicated RCA 1/4 input, is Airplay compatible, and has a lovely dedicated music-library scroll knob of which it’s quite proud of. This device does not yet have a release date or a price, but we can expect it inside 2012 for sure!

Check out this fabulous hands-on video with Numark’s product manager Chris Roman courtesy of the folks over at DigitalDJTips – note that although the unit isn’t fully working as of yet, it’s pretty much a final look at the hardware.

There’s nothing better than a gigantic pink monster truck / hearse hybrid made out of cardboard and paper to get your rock and roll concert tour underway, and They Might Be Giants have done us one better: they’ve taught us how to make our own! We love gadgets, and they’ve got a gigantic person-sized cardboard and paper boombox to fix us up there as well! This is basically the greatest combination of oddities to happen here in the tech, music, and fun world all day long!

All you’ve got to get is a bit of paper, some scissors, and maybe a bit of glue and you’ll be well on your way to creating the same awesome structure everyone in the hipster world’s favorite band of all time They Might Be Giants are pushing in this video! They’ve got a concert coming up, and their monster truck is telling you to get interested in it! Along for the ride as well is none other than Jonathan Coulton, famous for his ballads “the First of May” and “Still Alive” from the end of the Portal video game series (notably the first one.)

Now if you’re interested in creating this fine piece of automotive awesomeness, you can either make it full sized at over 12 feet tall, or you can choose to make the wimpy version at just a little closer to 4-inches. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t have a lot of parking space, we suggest going for the smaller model. ALSO if you’re interested in going to the tour of these fine fellows, you’ll want to know that it all begins on the 27th of January in Santa Cruz. You can find the rest of the dates down below the video complete with links on TMBG’s YouTube. Get in on it!

We’ve already reviewed the original Korg Monotron, so you should have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting into here with these two new models. Each of these little beasts have their own set of features and colors to make them unique enough for you to want to own the whole series.

Each model has a front panel with five knobs and a front-panel switch, these controls giving you hands-on analog sound control across the board. Each unit has a ribbon keyboard, this allowing you to make separated sounds if you like, or gradients of moving sound with a slide of your fingertip. The entire Monotron series uses the same VCF circuit as Korg’s classic MS-10 and MS-20 semi modular synthesizers, each of them born over 30 years ago. All units have audio-in, as well, this allowing you to bend the sounds of any instrument that can be converted to the single jack.

The Monotron DUO has two oscillators, each with its own separate tuning and with the ability to together create what Korg describes as a “rich, thick, analog tone.” Inside is the X-MOD cross modulation circuit as also found on Korg’s classic Mono/Poly, this allowing you to get wild edges to your sound if you wish, this instrument delivering everything from metallic sounds to vibrato to bust your eyeballs out. The ribbon can be set to be a Minor, Major, or Chromatic scale on the fly.

The Monotron DELAY has the analog oscillator, the LFO, the filter, and a fabulous “Space Delay” effect that works with equipped Time and Feedback. Pitch changes as you delay the time, and the delay can be added to any external sound via your Aux In jack once again. On the back is a trim pot to adjust the shape and direction of your wave, and the keyboard ribbon has another four-octave range. Also this Monotron glows under blacklight – why not!?

Each of these units, including the original Monotron, the DUO, and the DELAY, are available now for MSRP $70. Grab em all, why don’t you!

Yesterday, I mentioned a new app that has landed for the iPad that turns it into a professional mixer and recorder. Today, we have three new offerings from Behringer that are more hardware intense. The new mixers are being unveiled at the NAMM Show and are all small format premium offerings with a direct iPad interface that integrates the tablet into the mix.

The three new offerings all slip into the Xenyx iX Series and include the iX3242USB, iX2442USB and iX1642USB. The iPad docks in the mixers are able to send signals to and from the iPad and there are a range of routing options. All three docks have integrated stereo USB audio interfaces to allow the direct connection to a Mac or PC for recording.

The there products have a dual-engine KLARK-TEKNIK FX processor and have 32 editable presets. The pre-sets include reverb, chorus, flange, delay, pitch shifter and multi-effects. The iPad controls the FX Processor App to allow the ser to control the EQ’s, compressors, and reverbs and it has a full-spectrum analyzer. The press release doesn’t call out the specific difference in the three products or the price. I see more knobs between models presumably those are for additional channels.

Back in 1811 there was a mathematical technique proposed, it now known to us as Joseph Fourier’s Fourier Technique, a technique which eventually translated itself into one of the most basic ways we now encode and de-code images, music, and many other kinds of media – what’s being proposed by MIT now is that there’s a much more efficient way to go about all of it. The Fourier Technique took a complex signal, broke it down into several components, transmitted or processed them each separately, then re-combined them into what was basically there in the first place. In 1965 this technique was translated to computers, and sweet packaging did occur.

Now we’re taking multiple pieces of a file, telling the computer to see each similar piece as one piece of information, essentially, and sending. As publisher Devin Coldewey so elegantly puts it: instead of sending a music file over to your friend instrument by instrument, you just stack the sounds on top of one another, this resulting in a single file much more complicated than any of the individuals. This can all be simplified, says MIT researchers working to improve this “discrete” Fourier transform.

What they’ve found, or what they’re showing in the paper about to be published on the matter, is that the level of simplification that can be applied to this process can be rather drastic. For example they have an 8×8 block of values (64) in which 57 can be discarded – this happening without visibly affecting the file at hand, the file in this case being an image. What this could mean for our future is some gigantic things, ironically, especially in the fields of mobile computing and home computing – entertainment to the max. Have a peek at the paper as it’s titled now: Nearly Optimal Sparse Fourier Transform written up by Haitham Hassanieh, Piotr Indyk, Dina Katabi, and Eric Price.

We’re looking at you, Satechi, and your seemingly awesome feature of being able to roll with content straight off of a microSDHC/microSD card right out of the box, not to mention your strange sub sandwich overall aesthetic.

There comes a time in every publisher’s life when he or she must review something so tiny, so seemingly insignificant, that it otherwise might have slipped through the cracks – that’s what’s happening here with the V-Mode Faders earplugs. What these little buds are is blockers of sound. They look by all means to be in-ear speakers like their very close cousins, but in that they block the sound instead of blast it, here we’ve got an ever-so-slightly unique piece of gadgetry.

In-use

The quality you’re getting here is top-notch, and since this isn’t the first version of these little beasts, you know good and well that V-Moda has once again further perfected the art. Your hearing will be protected by the Faders working to filter noise up to 12dB. They do not BLOCK the noise, they filter it – this meaning that your mids and your high-range audio is still there and still very clear, while the damaging low-end noises galore are plugged up. You can adjust the amount you filter by changing the bud size, also.

The versions you’ll get in the store come with a lovely little shell case, while these early versions show just the buds — you’ll know the 2012 versions from the older ones from the slight difference on the box face, the newer ones having a bright ORANGE splash around the “METAL” bit. The newest versions also come with detachable cords. Otherwise they’re the same fabulous sound-blocking masterpieces.

Verdict

These monsters are certainly worth what you pay for them. If you want throwaway plugs, go ahead and pick up a pack of them from your local grocery store. These plugs will stopper up the sound to the degree that you like and will do it in a fashionable way – so very lovely. Pick up the gunmetal versions (like we’ve got here) for ultimate anytime wearability.

These buds will be available SOON, and when they are, they’ll be $15 USD plus shipping unless you can grab them from your local audio-conscious record store. Grab em online sooner from V-Moda!

If you are the sort who likes to create your own tunes, and you want to be able to do it on the road using your iPad this new app is for people just like you. The app is called Auria, and it comes from WaveMachine Labs. The app has debuted at the 2012 Winter NAMM show and will sell for $49.99. That makes it one of the more expensive apps for the iPad, but it appears to offer a lot for the audio fan.

Auria is a 48-track digital audio workstation, and it was made from the ground up to be used in the pro-level studio and live tracking applications. It has all the tools that are required for the recording, mixing, and editing of projects. The app supports AAF import/export, which allows the user to move projects between other digital audio workstations such as Pro Tools and Nuendo.

The app also has 64-bit double precision architecture and can record up to 24 tracks at the same time using USB audio interfaces. The iPad 2 can handle 48 tracks of simultaneous playback, but the iPad 1 is limited to 24 tracks of playback at one time. To record tracks the app requires the user to have the Camera Connection Kit and a compatible USB Class 2 audio interface. The app should land in the app store in Q1 2012.

There’s a brand new little ultra-simple fabulously powerful speaker on the block, and it comes in one whole heck of a lot of different colors: SuperTooth’s Disco 2, our hands-on experience with it right here before your eyes! This device is the next generation after the awesome original Disco we’ve already reviewed over a year ago, and the time is ripe for the second round to be a-launching! Let’s get this sound-blasting experience on the road!

Audio specialist SuperTooth rings this device in with one less knob than its predecessor and a few more buttons, making your whole experience slightly more intuitive. One thing we’re excited about on this model is the lack of a bright “breathing” set of lights, the last Disco’s system getting just a BIT annoying as it sat on standby for months on end. The good bits are all here, working with your bluetooth-enabled devices to bring you high-fidelity sound with a teeny, tiny footprint in your living space.

This SuperTooth Disco 2 unit is set to be connecting to your bluetooth devices with A2DP and will be will work plugged into the wall or with its own built-in rechargeable battery, just like the first winner of a device. This speaker is set to be released at the end of the first quarter here in early spring or late winter for the cool price of just $99. We’ll be reviewing the heck out of one before you know it!

There was a trailer full of goodies in the middle of a hall at CES 2012 with one gigantic gorilla man logo on the side, this being Outdoor Technologies, a group that’s about to explode onto the scene with such gems as their waterproof cases for iPhone and this, their wireless boombox “Turtle Shell.” This device is made for your hardcore activities such as biking, hiking, and camping as its both waterproof and fully mountable. Attach it to your bike, your rucksack, or even yourself!

This device is still likely several months off from actual review units or a full release, but full waterproofing on a speaker that’ll connect to any of your bluetooth-enabled devices is fun to consider! It’s also got both a built-in mic so you can use this monster as a speakerphone whenever the situation calls for it. The speaker is also shock and dust-proof incase you drop it down the side of a short cliff – though I’m sure they don’t suggest whipping it into a canyon just for testing.

The Turtle Shell’s current iteration comes with a flexible cord that lets you attach it easily to any variety of items in your traveling arsenal, the prospect of slapping it on a BMX bike seeming to me to be the most awesome possibility. The device will be able to run on 10-hours with Hi-fidelity sound with 240 hours of standby on a single charge, and gets charged up with a simple mini-USB jack.

The bluetooth range on this beast is 33 feet, you can connect it to your headphone-jack-having device with its simple 3.5mm jack as well, and both release date and pricing are not yet official. Expect this device in late summer at the earliest for something around $130 – blue please!

Slated for the Spring of 2012, TRAKTOR has today shown off a station that’ll take the last vestiges of advantage live performers had to place it in the hands of all peoples, the music expanding to the masses with no hinderances. What this station represents is a new tie between digital and analog mixing for the DJ on the run as well as professionals having worked in the field for generations. We’re in an exciting time for digital music, folks, no doubt about that.

Check out how the DJ crafts a few beats here in this trailer and notice how the digital bits flying around in a transparent array, this telling you that while the connection is there, you’ll still be working in your native environment. This takes what mostly analog users had loved about their preferred work station and keeps it in the real world, taking with it the advantages of the digital world to make a wholly connected experience.

Now we’ve only got the skills of the DJ at hand to blame for the idiotically insanely wicked beats that shall be dropping imminently. We’ll be following TRAKTOR very closely in the next few weeks here to grab the name, release date, and price of this particular station, and hope that they’ll be releasing it into the wild soon! The set you’re seeing in the video, mind you, uses Loopmasters sample content from these lovely titles: Lynx – Eclectic Drum and Bass, Kanji Kinetic Presents Drumstep & Mutant Bass Vol. 1, and you can find those at Loopmasters.

Welcome to our massive “best-of” wrap-up for CES 2012, complete with everything from smartphones to PCs and headphones and back, topped off with our own “most used gear” section for the curious. What you’ll find is that though there were more exhibitors, attendees, and media attention payed to the show than ever before, the overall result was a lot of the same gear re-hashed with a few new specifications. Pay special close attention to the conclusion of this post for a bit of a whopper if you’re a big fan of the largest show of the year here in the United States.

Smartphones

We certainly saw our fair share of smartphones on the floor this time around, the major bulk of them running either Windows Phone Mango or a modified version of Android Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich. One of the more interesting devices was Huawei’s Ascend P1 S, it being the new thinnest phone on earth, and its slightly fatter brother the P1, both of them strikingly thin. Next there were a couple of excellent value propositions, it would seem, from Pantech, they showing off two of the six new devices running on AT&T’s LTE network that’ll be up to speed by late this year – the Pantech Element is a waterproof tablet that, when you buy it, you basically get the Pantech Burst smartphone for free. Sony Experia came correct with their new set of Xperia devices with big specs and gigantic cameras: the Xperia ion having a 12 megapixel camera and the Xperia S being the one teased for so long. For Android phones the winner would have to be the Lenovo Racer-A, aka the first device to be running Intel’s Medfield chip – winning not just because it looks like a quality phone, but because it does indeed hold that record. Intel’s entry into the mobile market is likely going to have the longest lasting effect on the mobile industry while all these other phones get replaced – that’s for sure.

As for Windows Phones I’ll have to call a tie until we can review these devices extensively because they’re both so lovely: the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II. Both of these devices are bringing Windows Phone into the future, fighting head to head with the top guns at last.

BONUS: Since Samsung is insistent on saying this device is neither a smartphone or a tablet, here it is in the middle: the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy Note. All of its awesome features remain in-tact, it having a Snapdragon processor instead of an Exynos, and it comes in white as well as black, your choice!

- contributed by Chris “Burnsy” Burns

Tablets

As with smartphones, we’ve got a lot to be excited about in the hardware side of things, not least of all with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 for strength and touchability. As for future-looking devices, the newest iteration of the ASUS Padfone looked oddly enticing. There were also some lovely reader refreshes like the Kyobo Mirasol eReader with its unique form of lighting, it replicating the light bouncing off a butterfly. Windows 8 made a bit of a showing with groups like Qualcomm and their S4 chip showing the possibilities of a Windows 8 mobile world. Acer came back with a new iteration of the Acer Iconia Tab complete with a Tegra 3 quad-core chip. Toshiba made a showing with two devices you might find rather familiar, the smaller version of the Thrive in the Toshiba Thrive 7 and the Toshiba Excite x10, the latter being the one to keep an eye on through 2012.

Then there’s the big guns, both of them winners, both of them coming from no less than Asus and toting, again, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. First there was the undeniably inexpensively priced $249 7-inch quad-core Ice Cream Sandwich toting Asus MeMO 370t, a value we’re sure one whole heck of a lot of people will not be able to resist. Then there was the big showing of not only the Transformer Prime, but the Transformer Prime 700 series with its upgraded display and hardware. We saw the Prime running Skyrim via Splashtop, playing the first multiplayer mobile shooter in a new version of Shadowgun for Tegra, and all of it on Ice Cream Sandwich as the Transformer is now the world’s first Google-licensed Ice Cream Sandwich tablet.

Headphones / Earbuds

As always, there was a surplus of new headphones this year. Of them, our top three were InSound by Cygnett, the 5-minute Eeers Sonofit earbuds, and the HD700 from Sennheiser. The InSound had very decent ‘active’ noise cancellation and are extremely comfortable. Though easily portable, they are still not built as well as the Sennheisers. The HD 700 instead implements ‘passive’ noise cancellation, and offers a much cleaner, crisper sound. But at CES, people look for innovation – and that’s why Eers by Sonofit were the best headphones. With Eers, anyone can create a pair of custom-fit earbuds within minutes, all of it for a cool $300 USD.

BONUS: don’t forget the conceptual Parrot Zik by Starck and the wild contributions by Skullcandy in the Mix Master headphones.

Speakers

Though there were certainly one whole heck of a lot of speakers out there, we’ve decided to concentrate on the smaller world of portable speakers for all you mobile people out there. For that, there are a few gems that stick out. First there’s the SuperTooth Disco 2, an upgrade from the already great Disco 1 model, now with plenty of color and a vertical form factor. As for green representations, we had a talk with the makers of Eink who now bring us the Eton Rukus Solar powered boombox, so green it’s accented with the color green, imagine that! As for the tiniest speaker worth a peek at outside a smartphone, that was clearly the Harman JBL on-tour Micro, complete with Iron Man color scheme! The winner of our hearts in this category would have to be the high-blasting Altec Lansing 5000 series all-in-one speakers, these certainly commanding the hoards when it comes to all-in-one power.

Laptops

Ultrabooks were the hot ticket for the computer side of CES this year, with every major brand introducing new models at or just before the show. While Toshiba’s Windows 8 prototype wowed us with software and the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga showed off some amazing innovation in form factor, the top prize goes to Dell’s more humble XPS 13. Far from Dell’s usual utilitarian design, the XPS 13 Ultrabook is downright stunning, with a combination aluminum-carbon fiber frame that’s 15% smaller than the MacBook Air. It manages to cram a 13-inch screen into a 12-inch body, and with 300 nits of brightness it should be a joy to use. With a Core i5 or i7 processor, an SSD drive, 4GB of RAM and eight hours of rated battery life, the XPS 13 will be a major contender when it becomes available.

Cameras

There were a few cameras at CES that caught our eye. Canon’s revived PowerShot Digital ELPH 520HS crams some amazingly powerful glass into its tiny body, and Liquid Image’s Xtreme Sports Cams brings some great new features into a growing market. But the obvious winner for the show wasn’t even announced at CES: Nikon’s new flagship, the D4. This monster DSLR sets the standard for its line going forward, with insane ISO capabilities and forward-looking support for QXD. But the real innovation is a major upgrade in video capabilities, with dynamic cropping on the sensor for “zoomed” shots even on prime lenses, and the ability to actively monitor audio and stream video over HDMI. The D4 may well be the benchmark when it comes to DSLR video recording, a segment that has nowhere to go but up. At $6,000 it’s a little on the pricey side, but pro photographers will pay any price for the best – and when it comes to high-definition video in a comfortable DSLR format, the Nikon D4 will give it to them.

Televisions

Televisions were one of the hottest categories at CES this year, but not because of size. Previous shows were all about who can get the biggest panel out, but this year image quality ruled. LG and Samsung both introduced 55-inch OLED TVs with incredibly thin, light bodies, stunning black levels and color reproduction that’s the best we’ve ever seen. The best television of CES is Samsung’s Super OLED HDTV – we’re giving it the top spot because the image displayed was just slightly more vivid than LG’s. It’s a close match, however, and LG has the edge (ba-dum TISH) on style thanks to its 4mm, 16-pound body. Sharp’s battery powered AQUOS Freestyle gets a third place nod, because it’s a handy idea that the market is ready for.

Automotive Concept

There were two stand-out contenders at CES 2012 for automotive concepts, Audi and Mercedes. While our main hands-on write-ups of these two titans are going to be published early next week, I can tell you this now: Audi brought some heavy fire with a setup called Audi connect that included all of their innovations of 2011 including voice commands and Google Earth integration and made it explode with a touch-sensitive dial and a setup newly powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core chipset. Mercedes, on the other hand, had several concepts including a very similar in-car screen setup, this time connected to an iPhone, a couple of gesture-activated door demonstrations, and a box inside which a completely gesture-intensive console was shown. Both companies will have massively impressive vehicles in the very near future, that’s for certain.

Accessories

Here at CES a large focus is also on accessories for all the electronics announced, and while we saw plenty of impressive designs like the new Wrapsol anti-slip pads we’ve decided on one. Cygnett is known for constructing well built, quality cases for phones and tablets, not to mention their durable tablet stands. Since the mobile phone market has exploded everyone has a few cases to offer but Cygnett’s offerings were one of the most memorable. With simple designs that are actually easy to both get on AND off while still protecting the product they were our clear winner.

For a video rundown on a few cases from Cygnett including their new Icon Art series by artist Nathan Jurevicius be sure to check out our Insider Talk with Cygnett Creative Director Sophie Swann.

Mobile Carrier

When caught up in the mass of tech news here at CES, we often forget that a team’s mobile collaboration is only as good as the signal they’re running on. There isn’t one, but more like two obstacles a team requires of its carrier to perform at maximum efficiency. The first is consistency; a reliable data signal that will always be there when needed. The second is actual data strength. Processing videos and uploading images over a fast connection is essential if you plan on delivering the best CES coverage. And for both requirements, Verizon 4G LTE was unbeatable for CES 2012. With speeds of up to 14Mbps on the showroom floor and a consistent signal throughout the Las Vegas Convention Center, other carriers couldn’t come close.

Our most used gear

When the topic of most used gear comes up it could mean anything based on what you did at CES. Some might just answer — my shoes. Obviously we used cameras just about every possible minute. Here at SlashGear we were busy looking for wall power outlets and churning out stories to share with our readers and have as a team came up with a final conclusion. When it comes to outright sheer production MacBook’s rule. When it comes to mobile production it’s actually the complete opposite and Android rules, with only one iPhone on our team with a whole hoard of Galaxy Nexus for the rest.

Apple’s Macbook Pro and Air gave our team most of the tools needed (not counting a few heavy cameras) and our Macs outnumbers PC laptops 6-to-1. When we change over to the mobile aspect it was completely the opposite and we had 2 iPhones compared to about 10 Android smartphones, and 4 LTE Android tablets. With large screens, big batteries and awesome wired/wireless tethering options with Verizon 4G LTE our Android phones were the clear choice — and winner.

CES 2012′s Top Innovation: No One

While there certainly have been some interesting bits here and there at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, nothing made us absolutely drop our collective jaws. You could take the winners from the categories above and choose your favorite, sure, but nothing blew us away to the point of saying it absolutely won the show. It seemed as though most companies came to the show as a matter of requirement rather than because they wanted to show off their biggest and best. Instead we’re hoping for quite a few individual showings throughout the year from manufacturers as it continues to be the thing to do when you want the most individual attention.

When Vincent Nguyen, SlashGear’s Editor in Chief, was asked what he thought represented CES this year, his response was simple “nothing.”

The fact that this isn’t the only time we’ve heard this response from not just our own staff, but many of the people we spoke with throughout the convention may well be the first indication that bigger shows like CES are on their way out – what do you think?

We decided to go on a bit of a headphones and tiny speakers spree in the last couple of days at CES 2012, ending up all over the place for sound quality and notoriety in the industry, finding such odd gems as this: The Mix Master over-ear headphones by Skullcandy. While you can pick these up in a shiny black version, we went straight for the wildest color scheme we could find, the specs the same no matter which colorway you decide on. These phones hold the special distinction of having Propriety Mylar Drivers approved by none other than Mix Master Mike himself.

For those of you that do not know, Mix Master Mike is one of the most notoriously fantastic DJs on the planet, emerging on a global scale when joining the Beastie Boys as their resident spin master on such gems as Hello Nasty and their newest album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. What these headphones are is a DJ-friendly set of features like dual-cable inputs (one on either phone), one-touch mute, single-channel cue control from your pair of articulated earcups, and 50mm speakers. Your plugs are gold plated of course, as all plugs should be, and you’ve got interchangeable cables with a mic.

These headphones are light, have a 20-20K Hz frequency response, and can flip out and forward so you can jam with them as off-ear speakers as well. These phones will run you $299.99 and come in a couple of different color combinations online: Black and Kidrobot. The second pair are basically the same colors as the first, but come with the the “Dunny” outline pattern on the top, Kidrobot’s specialty. Good luck finding the ultra-wacky color scheme we’ve got here in Las Vegas!

The audio world is booming, and more and more people are starting to spend big money on high-end headphones and earbuds to get more enjoyment out of their music. Many of those high-end headphones are now also becoming a status symbol and makers are taking style into account as much as performance. The most successful brand in the high-end headphone industry has been Beats Electronics.

Beats grabbed up 53% of the $1 billion headphone market last year racking up some big money for Beats and its partner Monster according to NPD Group. Things are changing for Monster and Beats though as the two firms have now split away from the partnership that made the headphone so successful. Insiders claim that the split resulted from tension over which side of the partnership deserves more credit for the success.

Beats was able to go from a new brand to the segment leader in a few short years. Today, you can find Beats Audio tech in all sort of computers like the Spectre Ultrabook we spied at CES recently. Beats tech is even found in car audio now too. Sales of Beats gear was 60% of the money made by Monster last year. Monster will be offering up its own high-end headphones soon. Beats is retaining the rights to the sound tech in the headphones post split, the design, and the brand.

They have two noticeably new all-in-one speaker systems available, and with identical form factors. However, they differ primarily in functionality rather than hardware. The first demonstrated was the InAir 5000 Wireless AirPlay speaker.

As the name suggests, InAir is streamed over Wi-Fi via AirPlay for all iOS devices and computers through iTunes. The speakers have an excellent range across the board, even on the noisy showroom floor. It’s made out of brushed metal with plastic covering the sides. The build quality looked very decent, but couldn’t compare to the LIVE 5000 version.

The LIVE 5000 looks very similar, but delivers an entirely different experience. Different doesn’t always mean better, but in this case it does. The LIVE doesn’t limit its user to a single platform, as it supports iOS, Android, and over PC/Mac via their desktop LIVE controller. It also features streaming services such as Pandora, SiriusXM, TuneIn, and Rhapsody. They expect even more streaming applications available before launch.

We should see both speakers just before summer, but hopefully we’ll get to review one before then. They sounded great and the applications had fluid user interfaces.

iConnectivity has unveiled an ultra-portable digital audio mixer designed to work with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The mixer is called the iConnectMUSE and promises to bring studio quality mixing capabilities to your iOS device. It allows you to capture multiple channels of sound and output them to your iOS or computer software for mixing.

The iConnectMUSE features six stereo inputs and six stereo outputs, each with its own unique mix. It converts studio-quality analog audio into digital, offering higher quality audio processing and the ability to share and mix audio through an iOS device. It can even charge your iOS device at the same time. And all this is packed into an ultra-compact palm-sized device that the aspiring or professional musician can easily travel with to compose while in a hotel room or on tour and between gigs.

The mixer also features two USB ports, two 1/4-inch output audio jacks, a headphone monitor jack, Ethernet connection, and a MIDI pass-thru interface with limited DSP processing. The iConnectMUSE will be available in the second quarter of 2012, priced at $229.99.
