Typically when I mention Audio-Technica it’s because the company is pulling another USB turntable out of its bag of tricks. Today Audio-Technica has announced a new addition to its line of noise-cancelling headphones called the ATH-ANC1.

The new on-ear noise-cancelling earphones are designed with portability in mind and fold for storage. When the active noise-cancelling feature is on the headphones claim to block 85% of outside noise and deliver clear sound. To keep the earphones lightweight the noise-cancellation technology is in an external module attached to the cord.

This allows the earphones to be as streamlined and comfortable as possible for the wearer. Audio-Technica ships the headphones with a 1.6-foot extension cord, and airline adapter, and a AAA battery. The battery is good for up to 40 hours and the headphones weigh 3.5 ounces without the battery. The headphones will ship next month for $129.95.

The turntable was cool and could turn your vinyl into digital tracks, but the thing was very expensive at almost $500.
The new AT-LP2D-USB turntable has a much lower MSRP of $229. Despite the lower cost the turntable is still full featured with support for 33-1/3 and 45 rpm records and a balanced aluminum platter. The device has a Dual Magnet stereo cartridge with a replaceable stylus. The turntable also has a tone arm with a soft damping control.

The turntable also ships with Cakewalk Pyro software for PCs and Audacity for Mac or PC for converting the vinyl to audio files. The device connects to the computer via USB and the USB cable is included.

Audio-Technica has been making audio products like headphones and turntables for a long time. We may be in the midst of the digital music revolution with most other music formats becoming an afterthought to many consumers, but there are still those out there who like the old school sound of vinyl.

If you are the type that likes to play your old vinyl records and you need a new turntable that can be easily connected to your PC, Audio-Technica has a new high-end product for you. The turntable is called the AT-LP120-USB and has a direct drive motor with forward and reverse back-cuing capability. I take that to mean the thing can scratch DJ Jazzy Jeff-style.

The turntable can play records in 33-1/3, 45, and 78 RPM modes. The platter is made from cast aluminum and has a slip mat on top. The arm has soft damping control and adjustable tracking force. A USB cable for connecting to your PC is included. The turntable will be available this month for $429 and ships with software for Mac and PCs to convert vinyl records to digital tracks.

If you’re in the market for a new pair of headphones that are intended for the true audiophile, the latest line, ranging from entry-level to super advanced, announced from Audio Technica today might be a good fit for you.

First, there is the ATH-A2000X, which costs $779 and features 53mm diameter drivers, a 5Hz-45kHz frequency response, 42-ohm impedance level and 101dB. The last two specs are also found on the ATH-A1000X, which costs a little bit less at $603, and sports a 5Hz-42kHz frequency response.

The ATH-CK100 model is the next in line, which costs $561, uses a triple driver system and is the smallest In-Ear-Monitor type of headset available. It features 23-ohm impedance, 113dB and has a 20Hz-18kHz frequency response. Last, is the ATH-CKM30, which are a standard model meant for anyone. They feature 10.7mm drivers, a 16-ohm impedance, 14Hz-24kHz frequency response and 104db. These earbuds are available in white, purple, orange, brown, black and red and cost just $40. It is currently unknown if these Audio Technica models will be exported to the U.S.

As everybody knows, a woman’s ears will blister and burn if exposed to headphones not purposefully designed for them. So thank goodness for Audio-Technica‘s new headphone ranges ”created especially for women”, five sets of wired on-ear and in-ear models that will make feminists punch the air in delight. As Crystal Griffith, Audio-Technica’s Consumer Marketing Manager gushes, “They combine attractive design with outstanding sound quality, portability and value, and come in a variety of appealing colors to match any style – or stand out in the crowd.” Blimey.

The ranges break down as follows:

ATH-CK1W (MSRP: $49.99): in-ear headphones available in green, orange, pink, purple, white and yellow, all with matching “decorative” metal carrying cases and three interchangeable eartips to provide superior comfort for your delicate lady-ears.

ATH-ES3W (MSRP: $79.99) on-ear headphones available in four metallic finishes: blue, green, pink and silver. Cushioned earpads and soft headband, with folding ear-cups so as to slip like a narrow sanitary towel into your clutch-bag.

ATH-ON3W (MSRP: $59.99) on-ear headphones with a slim, ultralight design in dark gray, pink, teal blue and white. Fold-flat design leaves plenty of room in your purse for lipstick and puppies.

ATH-CK6W (MSRP: $79.99) in-ear headphones “designed to fit any woman’s style”, in metallic silver, blue, green and pink. Three interchangeable loop support pieces to disguise the shameful fact that one ear is bigger than the other after a boarding-school hockey accident.

ATH-CK52W (MSRP: $59.99) in-ear model with a color choice of blue, black and white, for “total comfort and convenience” like a fresh portaloo at an open-air festival.

All come with cord-wraps and, quite possibly, patronizing in-box literature about how Audio-Technica are doing women a big favor rather than just trying to cash in on a demographic with nothing more imaginative than a few different colors.

Audio-Technica Japan have unveiled their latest headphones, the ATH-EQ700, which pack retractable cables to avoid in-bag tangling. With an adjustable over-ear clip and positionable driver angles to suit different ear shapes, they have a frequency range of 14 – 24,000Hz and 22 ohms impedance. Of course the clever part is the cabling: the cord between the two earphones can extend to up to 50cm, while the main cable can pull out to 1m.

Both retract at the push of a button, meaning there’s no chance of them getting knotted or, more importantly, pinched or even cut by anything else in your pocket or bag. The gold-plated 3.5mm jack clips into a slot in the left earbud to keep things tidy. Despite all the extra winding mechanism, the ATH-EQ700 set only weigh 29g.

In Japan they’re priced at 3,150 yen ($30) but so far I’ve only been able to find them for sale in the US from AudioCubes, who have them for $49.99. Six colors are available: silver, red, black, blue, white and brown. They’re available now.
