2017 Audi A4 first drive: A8 for the everyman

2017 Audi A4 first drive: A8 for the everyman

Hardly had the lights flashed on the new 2017 Audi S4 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, when a handful of journalists were whisked off to Venice, Italy to test drive the next generation A4. Set to go on sale in Q1 of next year as a 2017 model, the new A4 is still some months out, but thanks to this early preview I got a chance to see just what’s going on with the subtle yet appreciable - not to mention critical - changes to both the exterior and interior design over the outgoing car. With 12 million A4 sold worldwide, there’s a lot riding on this ninth-generation (“B9”) model, especially as it faces down the likes of Cadillac's ATS, BMW;s 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz's C-Class.

Volkswagen got caught emissions cheating: What you need to know

Volkswagen got caught emissions cheating: What you need to know

Volkswagen's attempts to cheat the Clean Air Act in the US have proved shocking to diesel drivers thinking they were helping save the planet, but things are going to get even more complicated. The news that independent testing had spotted nitrogen oxide levels as much as 35x higher than the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permits from select VW and Audi cars, and that the discrepancy came down to some testing trickery, has left the German behemoth in hot water.

Kermit and Miss Piggy have Emmy lunch with Audi

This week the 2015 Audi-sponsored Television Academy teaser for the Emmys has been released, complete with Muppets. This video has Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, as well as a number of Emmy nominees, all participating in an extremely, extremely dry bit of humor. This is how the Muppets grow up and become adult-funny, just about as far away from slapstick as possible.

As the dashboard wars gather pace, Audi isn't willing to leave all the innovation to Apple and Google, delivering a high-tech OLED paradise in the e-tron quattro concept. The electric SUV - which not only promises a 300+ mile range, but also includes a new fast-charging mode that takes less than an hour to rejuice - takes the Audi Virtual Cockpit to its next-gen level, embedding unusually-shaped screens into not only the dash but the door trim, too.

Audi will bring its luxury electric crossover concept to the Frankfurt Auto Show next month, previewing a Tesla-challenging e-tron SUV for 2018. The car, dubbed the Audi e-tron quattro concept, is the German marque's clearest design indication for its all-electric SUV plans so far, following on from the Prologue Allroad concept from earlier in the year. However, while the sheet metal is interesting, the most excitement happens underneath.

2016 Audi TT/TTS Review

2016 Audi TT/TTS Review

The first time I saw the Audi TT, I can remember saying to myself, “wow - what a great looking car - I can't wait to grow up and buy one.” I was 21 when Audi first introduced the original TT in 1995; now, 20 years later and in it's third generation, it’s still a great looking car. Technology doesn’t stand still, however, and so the latest TT is more refined and technologically advanced both inside and out. Question is, has two decades been generous to the TT or just put it firmly into middle-age.

Audi prices up its 2016 A3 e-tron hybrid for US drivers

Audi has priced up the 2016 A3 Sportback e-tron for the US, its first - but, if all goes to plan, not last - electrified car for American drivers. The hybrid hatchback pairs a 1.4-liter TFSI engine with a plug-in electric drive system, and will show up in dealerships from October. Audi is, unsurprisingly, pitching it above a Prius or a Volt, however, with the A3 e-tron starting out at $37,900 before federal tax credits.

German car consortium ready to pay for Nokia’s HERE maps [UPDATE]

German car consortium ready to pay for Nokia’s HERE maps [UPDATE]

If this latest bit is true, Nokia might soon finally be able to unburden itself of yet another business tangential to its new found focus in networking technology. As earlier reported, a consortium of German automobile makers, namely Daimler, BMW, and Audi, are looking into purchasing Nokia's HERE maps business. Now it seems that the ball has started rolling, as the companies are said to have agreed to dole out 2.9 billion EUR, roughly $3.2 billion, to buy out what is probably the third, or even second, most popular map and navigation product in the market.

Nokia HERE sale tipped: Audi, Daimler and BMW to seal deal soon

Nokia has spent several years focusing on its HERE maps and the related technology, and for a small period of that time it has been working to offload the business onto someone else. Uber reportedly had a bid in for HERE at one point, as did Google. The latter of those two companies, according to sources that cropped up in May, spurred a trio of German auto makers to band together in a joint effort to block Google. Enter the latest round of sources and the info they bring: it looks like those auto makers may prove successful in their effort.
