Dell Vostro 1014, 1015 and 1088 entry-level notebooks debut

Dell have announced a new series of 14.1- and 15.6-inch Vostro business notebooks, the 1014, 1015 and 1088.  Intended as entry-level machines, they include integrated optical drives, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and EnergyStar 5.0 certification, together with four USB ports, gigabit ethernet and Bluetooth.

Dell have updated their XPS Studio 16 notebook with ATI's Mobility Radeon HD4670 GPU, complete with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory.  The new option - which is already listed on the company's US site - replaces the previous HD3670 with 512MB of memory, and can be paired with up to a Core 2 Duo T9600 processor running at 2.8GHz.

Acer subsidiary Packard Bell are set to release a CULV ultraportable for the European market.  The Packard Bell Butterfly S FC has a 13-inch display and uses Intel's 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500 processor, with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard-drive.

Toshiba UK have unveiled the company's latest Satellite notebooks, the A500, U500, L500 and L550, with screen sizes ranging from 13.3-inches to 17.3-inches.  The laptops start with the the 13.3-inch WXGA ultraportable U500, shown here, with a choice of Core 2 Duo and Pentium CPUs, up to 4GB RAM, 500GB storage and optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics.

MSI R4890 Cyclone SOC video card

MSI have announced a new video card, the R4890 Cyclone SOC, which brings together ATI's 1GHz HD 4890 core with 800 stream processors and 1GB of GDDR5 256-bit memory.  Since cooling all that takes some effort, there's also a huge 10cm fan with four 8mm heatpipes.  That makes for the biggest fan on an HD 4890-based video card to date, and a setup which MSI claim is far quieter than rival systems.

ASUS U50VG, K50AB, K50IJ and K70AB notebooks arrive

ASUS have announced a number of new notebooks, including both Intel and AMD powered machines and with screen sizes ranging from 15.6- to 17.3-inches.  Of the new models, perhaps the most interesting is this, the U50VG-XX060C, a 15-6-inch Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.1GHz machine with 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce G 105M 512MB graphics.

AMD have been discussing the impact of DirectX 11 and the benefits of its latest graphics chip, set to appear on video cards in time for the December holidays.  According to AMD, transcoding video using the chip will be three times quicker than using the CPU, and will offer automatic conversions without requiring the user to mess with codecs or resolutions.
