‘ASUS’ Stories

Intel atom logoIntel may have officially announced the Atom N470 processor today – well, actually they pulled the trigger early on Saturday – but that isn’t the only new CPU at CeBIT 2010 this week.  As we’ve seen on netbooks like the ASUS Eee PC 1018P Prime, Intel have also launched the Atom N455 and Atom N475.  The two variant chips are obviously based on the 1.66GHz N450 and 1.83GHz N470 processors, but apparently add in support for DDR3 memory.

Out of all of the leaked ASUS netbooks we saw last week, the most interesting was the Eee PC 1018P.  That’s now been officially announced at CeBIT 2010, and the Eee PC 1018P Prime looks even better in photos than it does in renders.  Clad in brushed aluminum, bearing USB 3.0 ports and promising 10hrs of battery life, the 1018P Prime also gets Intel N455 and N475 processors.

ASUS’ Eee PC T101MT 10-inch convertible multitouch tablet is still showing up as shipping in 1-2 months over at Amazon Germany, where it was spotted hanging around waiting for preorders earlier this month, but review units already seem to be poking their noses out.  Over at AllTouchTablet they found a T101MT waiting on their doorstep, and so did the only honest thing and reviewed it.

Details of three upcoming Eee PC models ASUS is expected to bring to CeBIT 2010 have leaked.  According to blogeee the three new models – the Eee PC 1018P, the Eee PC 1016P and the Eee PC 1015P (shown here) – all have 10-inch displays and, we’re presuming, run Intel’s latest Pine Trail Atom processors.

Details of two new, so-far unannounced ASUS mainboards have emerged, with one apparently tipping the imminent arrival of the AMD 890GX chipset expected to be part of AMD’s upcoming Leo platform.  The ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 not only supports the new six-core Thuban processors, but squeezes in two USB 3.0 ports alongside its Radeon HD 4290 integrated graphics and two PCI Express Gen2 x16 slots.

Details of an upcoming ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) graphics card have emerged, complete with some early photos, and it seems the company have taken an ATI Radeon HD 5870 and overclocked it.  The fettled card cranks the GPU from 850MHz to 900MHz and doubles RAM to 2GB of 4.9Gbps GDDR5 memory.  Meanwhile ASUS are apparently making it straightforward to overclock the ROG card a little more again, with up to 1080MHz possible from the GPU and 5.2Gbps from the memory.

Having pushed out a tutorial video guiding us through the complexities of a multitouch netbook display, ASUS have now pushed out the Eee PC T101MT itself.  The convertible netbook has now been listed – though is not currently in stock – at Amazon Germany, priced at €499 ($686), though it’s shown as having a 12.1-inch display rather than the 10.1-inch panel previously mentioned.

ASUS delivered quite a few interesting devices at CES 2010, but according to chairman Jonney Shih we’ll need to wait until June for their “killer product”.  The teasing exec mentioned the upcoming device while confirming that ASUS have decided to spin out the manufacturing firm Pegatron as a separate firm; unfortunately he gave no further indication of exactly what that device might be.

Remember ASUS’ G73 gaming notebook, announced back at CES 2010 last month?  The Core i7-720QM machine has finally gone on sale, in the shape of the ASUS G73JH-X1, with Newegg offering the notebook for $1,449.99.  That gets you distinctive “Stealth Fighter” looks, 8GB of memory and a 17.3-inch Full HD display.

Ah, the elusive ASUS Eee PC T101MT, the multitouch convertible 10.1-inch netbook that just refuses to arrive.  ASUS have uploaded a new tutorial video to YouTube, demonstrating the T101MT's interface, which certainly seems to suggest that the netbook is on its way.  However, somewhat bizarrely we couldn't actually spot any multitouch gestures demonstrated, only single-finger ones.
