ASUS Padfone release teased in MWC invite UPDATED with video!

It's less than a week now before we head to Barcelona to check out the biggest event of the year surrounding nothing but mobile and ASUS is bringing the heat with the Padfone! We've gotten a couple glimpses of this device in different iterations leading up to this event, and indeed across the ocean in the opposite direction they've had an older version of the device out for hands-on experience, but this is the upgrade. What we can expect is nothing less than a whole new set of hardware and perhaps an upgraded processor on the inside as well!

ASUS Padfone 2012 refresh eyes-on

ASUS Padfone 2012 refresh eyes-on

This week we're getting the opportunity to take a look at ASUS new and upcoming mobile line, most of them tablets, but some of them oddities like this - the ASUS Padfone, a device which takes both a smartphone and ads a pocket inside a tablet to use both whenever you need whichever size. We've seen this device before in a couple of different iterations, and it's more than likely going to be dropping at Mobile World Congress 2012. What this 2012 refresh contains is Ice Cream Sandwich and a possible change-up of the processor manufacturer as well.

Asus Padfone packing Snapdragon MSM8960 S4 spied in GLBenchmark database

Asus Padfone packing Snapdragon MSM8960 S4 spied in GLBenchmark database

It seems that the folks that run around testing out unreleased handsets can’t resist taunting those of us that don’t get to see the devices until they launch. Often we catch little glimpses of the devices in spy photos and in benchmark databases as well. The GLBenchmark database has offered up some goods on a new version of the Asus Padfone. This little smartphone slips into the tablet dock we covered back in May.

ASUS Padfone Not Unique, Behold The TransPhone!

ASUS Padfone Not Unique, Behold The TransPhone!

We just talked about a copycat claim from AlwaysInnovating that emerged soon after the ASUS Padfone announcement, and now there looks to be another manufacturer that may look with disdain at ASUS's claim to a revolutionary new product. The concept of a tablet and phone hybrid certainly isn't completely new, as we've seen before in this fancy HTC Tube design concept. But, actual working prototypes didn't seem to exist until now.

ASUS Padfone Copycat Accusations Begin with AlwaysInnovating

Here come the accusations! On our very own site we've heard the first scream of "how dare you!", directed straight at ASUS who today have announced their radically innovative Padfone, a combination of tablet and phone that hereto had never been heard of by anyone! Or had it? A group by the name of AlwaysInnovating has tossed the first rock at ASUS noting that their concept by the name of "Smart Book", a device which appears at first glance to be a combination of two ASUS products: the Padfone and the Eee Pad Transformer.

ASUS Padfone: Twice as appealing or doubly-dumb?

ASUS Padfone: Twice as appealing or doubly-dumb?

Maybe it was too many Transformers toys when I was younger, or because I have a frustrated engineer inside me, but I - like plenty of others - can't take my eyes off the ASUS Padfone. The new tablet/smartphone hybrid, fresh (after a leak or two) to Computex 2011 this morning, taps into a geeky, childish "slot this gadget into that gadget and make it better overall" mindset that also left us jonesing for an ATRIX after CES. Question is, after the lust fades, does the reality the Padfone offers actually bear up?

ASUS PadFone hands-on roundup [Video]

ASUS PadFone hands-on roundup [Video]

ASUS' PadFone is currently splitting opinion at Computex 2011, and not just because the company has bizarrely chosen to brand the décolletage of its demo model. As well as a couple of ASUS-made demos, we're seeing a number of hands-on first impressions of the hybrid phone/tablet prototype, and we've gathered them all up for you after the cut.

ASUS PadFone runs IE8? [Video gaffe]

ASUS PadFone runs IE8? [Video gaffe]

ASUS is mighty proud of its PadFone, but it seems in its hurry to get the prototype ready for Computex 2011 this week, some of the more unusual features have gone unmentioned: namely, the fact that Internet Explorer 8 apparently runs on the tablet. In what we're guessing is a mockup accident, the new ASUS "Behind the Scenes" video showing the PadFone's design journey shows Microsoft's IE8 getting some surfing playtime, where we'd normally expect to see the regular Android Honeycomb browser.
