Archos 9 dumps Win7 for Google Chromium OS

, Dec 18th 2009 Discuss [3]

Windows 7 Starter Edition wouldn't be our first choice of OS for the Archos 9 PC Tablet - after all, it lacks the handwriting functionality you'll find in other versions - but at least it recognizes the touchscreen.  Steve from UMPC Portal decided to load up Chromium OS on his Archos 9 (which we saw unboxed yesterday) but the end result is less than usable: since Chromium doesn't recognize the touchscreen, nor have an on-screen keyboard, you'll basically be stuck looking at the login page. , Nov 30th 2009 Discuss [0]

Despite the recent firmware update, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet is still left without access to the Android Market, and despite Archos' attempts to encourage development of device-specific apps for their own AppLib download store, the range of titles is still small.  Happily wherever there's a problem, there's usually a hack to address it, and so jkkmobile has outlined a guide to installing the Android Market - and some other things - onto the Archos 5 MID. Remember Archos' triumphant announcement last month that the Archos 9 PC Tablet was finally arriving on store shelves?  Well, that joy looks to have been seriously premature; while the Archos 9 may have gone up for order on October 22nd - priced at £449.99 ($748) or thereabouts - it's not expected to ship for another few weeks at least.  UMPC Portal spoke to Archos themselves, who revealed that Archos 9 pre-orders won't actually ship until early December.  It's even worse news if you're waiting to pick one up at a nearby retail store.
